Dear bhagavathas,
Sri.Madhavakannan of Singapore is doing a great kaimkaryam of translating the divya prabandham in a simple English providing the basic meaning of the pasurams. His write ups are concise yet filled with great anubavams. His translations are strictly as per our sampradayam and adiyen has benefitted a lot from his wonderful translations. So far he has completed Thiruvaymozhi and Peria Thirumozhi and few thiruvandhadhis. adiyen is sure that he will continue to enlighten us with the balance prabandhams in the coming days.
Sri.Madhavakannan used to present meanings for every ten pasurams in one posting. Most of you aware that all such postings are being archeived in Sri.Mani's Srivaishnavam page and also in bhakti list egroups site. But since the postings are scattered spanning over a period of two years it may be bit difficult to browse and read them. adiyen is attempting to compile them for the benefit of bhagavathas who can read the entire Peria thirumozhi in say 11 documents.Hope this will be of use to you.
Now over to Sri.Madhavakannan and adiyen won't interfere with him and Thirumangai azhvar, hereafter.
Dasan venkat
Sri:
Dearest Sisters and Brothers, Happy makara sankaranthi! Happy Pongal!
I pray to Divya Damapthis for Their blessings and AchAryAs and ThirumangaiAzhwAr for Their anugraham for my yet another rash, brazen attempt to enter into tranlsation kaimkaryam. Please forgive me for my errors and mistakes. Anything good in it, I am not to be "blamed"; All Emperumaan's grace and AzhwAr's and AchAryan anugraham. All mistakes, blunders are mine; Please pat (slap) my back for that.
ThirumangaiAzhwAr's Periya Thirumozhi is what we are going to enjoy next. All of you know well about this Great AzhwAr, and he needs no introduction. However, for novices like me, just a quick account of his biography:
In his early days, as a king, our Lord Narayana was far from AzhwAr's
thoughts. His spiritual journey started with a commitment he made
to his sweetheart Kumudhavalli in exchange for her hand in marriage.
While most women may have asked for her suitor's everlasting love, or a
diamond ring, or a golden bangle, all our gentle lady Kumudhavalli sought
from AzhwAr was that he must wear the marks of Sri Vaishnava and serve
food (amudhu) for 1,000 Vaishnavaas everyday for a period of one
year. This service, initiated as a price for carnal pleasure,
turned into a labour of divine love towards the devotees of our Lord Narayana.
Years rolled by. AzhwAr spent all his wealth in the service of Vaishnavas.
With his coffers empty, AzhwAr could not continue the service. He
could not bear the thought of having to turn away the Vasihnavas who by
then were accustomed to blessing his abode with their presence.
The feeling of despair turned to anger at the sight of the greedy idle rich strolling around with all their gaudy and ostentatious jewels and showing contempt for the simple and devout Vasihnavas. This was enough to drive our Great AzhwAr to actions. But it was not just fame that was in store for our AzhwAr.
Our Lord Sriya: Pathih Sriman Narayana decided to intervene and turn AzhwAr away from the ways of the sword. He and His consort, our divine mother Sri, appeared before him as a newly wed couple bedecked with priceless ornaments. AzhwAr, who hid himself at ThirumaNankollai, stopped the couple and forcibly relieved them of all the jewellery.
But, there was one piece on our Lord's toe that wouldn't come off however
much AzhwAr tried. In frustration AzhwAr
put his head on the lotus feet of our Lord (!) with the intention of
biting the ring off. He asked the Lord as to what is the magic manthra
for removing? (The Lord must have mis understood that AzhwAr enquires regarding
samsaara bond!) and that sort of SaraNagathy did work! at that moment AzhwAr
was drawn in by the beauty of the lotus feet and realized
the true nature of the couple standing in front of him. The Lord
then instructed the esoteric meaning of the "magic manthra" i.e
"Thirumandhiram" or Ashtaaksharam for the Most Blessed AzhwAr, to get
initiated by the Lord Himself, with Their "thadutthaaTkoLLal".
Thus AzhwAr learnt of the efficacy of the divine name "Narayana" from our Lord Narayana Himself!
He immediately burst out to sing the poem "Periya Thirumozhi" (Great divine poem) consisting of 1,084 verses. The first ten of these verses are dedicated to the name "Narayana." These first 10 emotional verses give aid and comfort to people.
AzhwAr comes down hard on himself with intense self criticism for the
violence he had caused, though for a good cause, for having sought fleeting
worldly pleasures, for having squandered his days on mundane pursuits.
He ends each of
these ten verses with a celebration of the divine name Narayana, for
after finding this sweet name, AzhwAr declares, he was free from all the
sins and assured of the everlasting bliss at the lotus feet of our sweet
Lord Narayana (Biography passage -stole- from Sri Dileepan's
post in Dec 95- in bhakti list - Thanks, Dileepan!)
His compositions were :
1. Periya thirumozhi
2. Periya thirumadal
3. SiRiya thirumadal
4. Thiru nedunthANdakam (TNT)
5. Thiru KurunthANdakam(TKT)
6.Thiru vezhuk kurrirukkai.
His pAsurams are marvellous; excellent and have unsurpassed beauty in them. ParAsara Bhattar made use of his TNT to win over his counter part, an advaitin scholar in his arguments and later the advaitin became his disciple 'nam jeeyar'.
Sri RanganAtha himself heard and was greatly pleased with that argument re-enacted from Bhattar quoting from TNT (Please read excellent posts of Sri V. SadagOpan on TNT and TKT duringFeb 96 from Bhakti Archives - a real feast to each one of you).
Thirumangai AzhwAr (a KING, a person who had all kingly royal comforts) walked all the way and VISITED almost all temples. He is simply GREAT, my dearest brothers and sisters. He is JUST S U P E R B AzhwAr. His wordings are his outpourings straight from his heart.
It is told and declared by Tamil Poets of all kinds that His paasurams contain ezhutthu (writing), sol,(words) poruL, (meanings), yaappu (Grammar), aNi (figure of sppech?) etc.. His songs are so great and so nice to recite! It is simple and quite lucid too for reciters and those who know even little Tamil, can understand the lovely emotional outbursts of AzhwAr and his bhakti.
His paasurams depict mainly the archaavathaarams of Divya dEsams, and when He enjoys Them with the descrition of Divya Desams, they simply immerse us in unbounded limitless bliss and pErAnandham.
Thai AzhwAr, when Kumudavalli had asked him to become a Srivaishnava, got his pancha samskaaram done by ThirunaRaiyoor Nambhi. He got his Thiru ManthrOpadEsam from Sri SowrirAja PerumAL; AzhwAr praises These Lords individually with 100 pAsurams! Nambhi naamam sollil NamO NaaraayaNamE".
This AzhwAr had Great regards for NammAzhwAr. He appealed and requested Sri Ranganathan for lsitening to Thiruvaaymozhi from Kaarthigai sukla Ekadasi and now all Sri vaishnava Divya Desams celebrate this uthasavam of reciting Thiruvaaymozhi.
The essence of Periya Thirumozhi is: The worldly life is sorrowful;
It can be cured only by the grace of Sriman Narayanan; Hence, get saved
by paying obeisance to Him at His Divya Desams (106 Thiruppathis on this
Earth). AzhwAr visited almost about 80 Thiruppathis, all on foot; He sang
1253 passurams, next only to NammAzhwAr; (but NammAzhwAr never went
to any Divya Desams; The Lords came to Him!)… Thirumangai AzhwAr padi
padi paraparappaay Thirndhaar…He declares: If one surrenders to Sriman
Narayanan, "enRum vinaiyaagina saaragilaavE"… (Never will sins accrue to
your account!)..
This prabhandham should be read, re-read, re-re read and enjoyed! So
nice are they… Last Kaarthigai Kritthigai nakshathram (during AzhwAr Thirunakshathram)
as instructed by our KaNNan Swami, I could recite Periya Thirumozhi for
ten days preceding his Thirunakshathram and completed on his birthday.
It was a great feeling of having read his lovely Periya Thirumozhi. Dearest
Sisters and Brothers, my attempting to write these translation is: 1. Those
who do not know Tamil, can get to know the meanings, and enjoy. 2. Those
who wish to know the meanings (though we all know Tamil, it is still difficult
to understand the
meanings) and 3. Being a self-centred person, I myself would like to
enjoy them, by reading the pAsurams and writing these translations.
May I request for all your aseervaathams and wishes for such a rash attempt? (Fools rush in where angels fear to tread).
Thirumangai AzhwAr ThiruvadigaLE SaraNam
"thunjum bOdhu azhaimin.. thuyar varil ninaimin… thuyarileer sollinum nanRaam… (While you sleep, call… or when you feel depressed and sorrowful… call… or no worries.. no problems.. stilll it is so sweet to utter…. Call "Narayana Narayana" says "Thirumangai AzhwAr)
ThirumangaiAzhwAr, enjoys seeing the Divya mangaLa vigraham of
ThirukkaNNapuram Sowri rAja PerumAL now longs for seeing Him. He gets
into
nAyikA bhAvam, and the "mother" laments at her condition.
1. My girl says "the Divine bow, the sharp sword, the lustrous chakrA
etc"..
She also exclaims "oh what lovely broad huge mountain like shoulders
of that
Emperumaan! Look at them; so wonderful.". Due to her separation from
Him,
her tender breasts have become pale, and one can guess her languishing.
Perhaps, she had gone and paid obeisance to that ThirukkaNNapuram PerumAN.
That's why she has gone astray like this. (means: if one sees Him,
he has to
go mad after Him.. udal enakku urgumaalO? en seygEn..)
2. My girl says "In His Hand, the sword that finished the enemies, is
there". On the Other Hand, the divine strong chakrA that destroyed
the
mounatins that were flying with their feathers with an intent to destroy
the
earth.. "(during upEndran avtaar). She addresses Him saying "the
unparalleled Peerless SwamI!" She must have seen that dark hued mountain
like huge, sowlabhyan, KaNNapuramangai PerumAn.
3. She says "Oh that thuLasi is so gorgeous on His diamond, gem laden
Crown..."and exclaims, "those ear studs, makara kuNdalams are so bright
and
shed lustre with their stones..". "Oh those necklace and that garland
on the
divine chest adorning His ThirumEni... (aiyO! ivan azhagenna azhiyaa
azhagudaiyaan).. She should have gone and seen Emperumaan of
ThirukkaNNapuram.
4. She says that Emperumaan has that divine strong chest, which is so
huge
and mountain like where the bees hum and loiter due to those thuLasi
maalai's presence there.. She also says "He is my Swami, who rode on
garudan, and is the one who plucked the tusk of Kuvalayaapeetam elephant.".
"Oh folks, those who talk so nice to me, for my good! Look at His tender,
red coral like beautiful mouth.." She must have seen the dark cloud
like
ThirukkaNNapuram PerumAn.
5. She says "Peruman's Lotus Feet are so graceful and sweet; His long,
lovely limbs, the Lotus like Thirumugam, the golden ornaments on Him,
will
never ever go away from my mind..". Also, she says "Periya PiraaTTi,
who has
darting, sharp, long, dark, large, well spread, black eyes, reside
in His
large divine chest..". It appears she must have surely seen ThirukkaNNapuram
PerumAn..
6. She says, "He has 1000 divine names; He is Greatest Lord; PeriyOn...
PeraruLaaLan.." He has shining, beautiful makara kuNadalams; He has
eight
shoulders; He stand like rainy, dark clouds; and also like tall,
anjanamalai.. " She must have surely seen ThirukkaNNapuram PerumAL.
7. My girl says "He has red Peethaambaram (Thiruppariattam); Also there
is
gold hued strands on the Peethaambaram. Those lovely sweet two Feet,
two
Hands are the red lotus flowers; She asks "Is His ThirumEni, MaragathamaNi?
(Emerald stone?), Is He blue Hued maNi?" She must have certainly seen
ThirukkaNNapuram PerumAN.
8. My girl says " My master- My Swami - rides on GarudA; (which is always
victorious). He is the chief of even the most voctoruos Indran". She
asks
"Will we not be saved, if we get (blessed to be) hugged and embraced
by Him
to His Divine Chest? She must have seen ThirukkaNNapuram PerumAn.
9. My girl says "The ThuLasi on His Head spreads fragrance everywhere;
I am
craving for Him; my desire has been exponentially increasing; I will
never
be able to even breathe (live) without Him; When did I see Him and
at which
Divya Desam?" I don' know." ThirukkaNNapuram Sowriraja PerumAn is great
looking and is so gorgeously beautiful. She must have definitely seen
Him
only.
10. This ten is on the deer eyed girl, talking about her enjoying and
seeing
to her heart's content of that Accharya bhUthan ThirukkaNNa puram SowrirAja
PerumAL, and those who read this faultless, ten sung by Kaliyan in
chaste
Tamil, will be celebrated and praised by everyone at Paramapadham.
The mother of Parakala nAyaki goes on to lament about her daughter's
falling
crazy after ThirukkaNNapuram PerumAL.
1. The most knowledgeable one- the chief and director of even Devas-
the
divine consort of the most beautiful Periya PiraaTTi- the personification
of
Suddha sathvam- the most gorgeous golden like form- and such Greatest
You-
why do You need to steal my daughter’s bangles? What is that which
she did:
all that she did is to pay her anjali towards the direction of your
ThirukkaNNapuram. idhenna anyaayam? (It is unbecoming of such Great
You to
have stolen her wrist bangles- .)
2. (When Sowriraja PerumAL said, "Your girl does not have the feminine
qualities of shyness..., you need to correct her..", the mother says..)
I
kept her at the top of the building (in order not to listen to others'
and
get influenced), she looked at all directions and looked towards ThirukkaNNa
pura- she gets excited looking at that. She yells, "hey! look at
ThirukkaNNapuram" and rejoices at that. She had even attmpted madal
oordhal,
by falling in love with ThirunaRaiyoor Nambhi(He is responsible for
her
falling in love with Him). This singer (paaNar) is bent on her such
actions
of love for Him. What can I do? (the singer- "paaNar" is supposed to
let the
lady join her lover.. by singing love tunes.- Poorvars say AzhwAr meant
AchAryan here.)
3. My girl babbles saying "Thiruneermalai, ThiruvEmkatam et al, without
knowing what she is speaking. Thirumeyyam- when she hears she gets
exasperated. She exclaims, "The most welathiest ThirukkaNNapuram",
she melts
at that statement, she gets thinner and thinner; she suffers languishing.
What a pitiable sight to see my daughter suffering like this!
4. There is no day, she (enjoys to) likes eating. She does not even
sleep
(comfortably); She doe not have even the age (of having been in unison
with
her Man and then separated); She is still a young innocent girl. She
is
paying obeisance to KaNNan's ThirukkaNNapuram only. Her mind is always
on
the ocean like dark bluish most beautiful KaNNan. What is the great
wonder
in it! (It is not.- so, why are You troubling her?)
5. My girl, who pays her anjali to ThirukkaNNapuram,. where KaNNan resides,
tells me with no "lajjai" (shyness) about her love for You, forgetting
her
feminine naaNam. She tells how she longs for You without knowing that
she
has to hide such things from the mother. Not just telling. She also
acts and
laments and her body fair golden colour complexion has gone pale. When
listening to the butter thief's getting tied down to mortar, she goes
crazy.
6. She says "We have come here to stay at this place of ThirukkaNNapuram
from the northern Thirumalai. The little girl of yesterday- the most
beautiful feminine one- my darling daughter- what all she is saying
and
longing for Emperumaan! What does Emperumaan do to her? This Lord-
who had
enjoyed uniting with the cowherd women at Thurvaayarpaadi- for Him,
this
poor small, young girl (pEthai- seven year old?)- what will she do?
What is
the use of His stealing away her sleep?
7. When the noisy wavy ocean makes roaring sounds, and when the cool
moon
shower its rays, why does she go thin? How long will she go thin? Is
she
getting used to feel suffering like this? Her only desire is the Sriranngam
Divya Desam where the KaNNan stays (who had torn open the horse asuran-
kEsi)
8. My girl went to ThirukkaNNapuram seeing the way in which the Bhagawathas
(Your servants) perform their anjali at You and get saved at this sthalam.
Is it right on YOUR PART to steal her golden complexion and make it
pale
with such suffering?
9. The teeth are also not completely formed (so young she is); (see
the 6th
pAsuram) the hair is not even long enough to tie.. She is not even
old
enough to have got any feminine beauty to attract her lover (whom she
is
desirous of). What can I do now? Others will think and look at me-
as the
mother who had such a daughter who pays obeisance to the piLLai (son)
of
ThirukkaNNapuram.
10. This is ten is on my Swami of ThirukkaNNapuram. It is sung by the
chief
of Thirumangai- Parakalan. Those who read this most beautiful, well
worded
Tamil pAsurams, will be blessed with: living a long life at ThirukkaNNapuram
listening to this crystal clear Thirumozhi. (means: At parampadham
one does
not have ThirukkaNNapuram. So, here only, listen to it..)
When parakalanayaki's mother lamented for her darling daughter's getting
thinner and losing bangles, the AzhwAr (Parakalanayaki) looks at her
bangles
and cries showing her wrists where she lost the bangles. Excellent
ten!
1. For the sarvEshwaran, the greatest, Parama upakaarakan, who had lifted
the huge Govardhana Mountain, with His mountain like shoulders; who
is so
manly with His Thirutthuzhaay garland; who stays permanently at
ThirukkaNNapuram, surrounded by ponds. - For Him, I have lost my beautiful
wrist bangles. ("varaiyeduttha perumAnukku izhandhEn varivaLaiyE")
2. The most victorious Lord KaNNan- who stays permanently at
ThirukkaNNapuram, full of beautiful tall buildings, impregnated with
gemstones; who reclines on the striped lined bodied- AnanthAzhwAn and
has
His YoganithrA; who broke the tusker of Kuvalayaapeetam elephant -
For such
SarvEshwaran- I have lost my heavy beautiful wrist bangles. ("kariveruva
maruppositthaaRkku izhandhEn gana vaLaiyE..")
3. For that Emperumaan, who resides permanently at ThirukkaNNapuram,
who had
killed the huge seven bulls; who had alleviated the disease of the
cool Moon
once; who has red lotus like eyes; who has the quality of "Vaathsalyam",
I
have lost my tight wrist dense bangles, falling off easily.
4. For the Lord, who hah stooped Himself to such a Sowlabhyam and allowed
Himself tied to a mortar, by the large eyed YashOdha PiraaTTi; who
went
crawling in between the two marudha trees and befelled them; - the
One who
has His nithya vaasam at ThirukkaNNapuram- I have lost my golden bangles
for
Him.
5. The PerumAN, who resides permanently at ThirukkaNNapuram, where Brahmins
perform their karmas, grooming the shining agni, reciting the mantras
with
loud voice. - The PerumAn, who had run with the fear of being caught
by His
chasing mother YashOda with a stick and anger in her eyes, - who had
eaten
the curd, and smeared the butter all over His face (for concocting
a story,
in case He gets caught), for that Greatest Sowlabhyan, I have lost
my
bangles.
6. For the SarvEshawaran, who had torn open the strong chest of HiraNyan,
with His sharp beautiful nails, when Hiaranyan shouted angrily at his
son
Prahalada (the greatest devotee of Emperumaan), who stays permanently
at
ThirukkaNNapuram;- fro Him , I have lost my shining, lustrous bangles.
7. For the SarvEshawaran, who had swallowed the vast space, the expanded
Universe; the Sun, the Moon, the direction, etc,, during PraLayam,
and
brought them back again- who resides always at ThirukkaNNapuram- For
Him, I
have lost my shining wrist bangles.
8. For the Lord, who has the red lotus in His naabhi; the One who reclines
on the bed of ThiruvananthAzhwAn on the ocean; the One who stays at
ThirukkaNNapuram, I have lost my wrist bangles.
9. Periya PiraaTTi- is the most feminine, most beautiful with long slender
bamboo like shoulders, the one who has ever youthful appearance with
tender
breasts; Due to Her stay at the strong divine chest, Emperumaan is
blessed
with the greatest wealth. This Emperumaan stays permanently at
ThirukkaNNapuram. He is the SarvEshswaran; sarava yagnan; Sarva vyaapi;
He
has thousand divine names. He has the greatest caliber of reclining
on the
thousand-headed Adhiseshan. For Him, I have lost my dense wrist bangles.
10. This ten is on the Emperumaan who has His Nithya vaasam at
ThirukkaNNapuram. The composer is the king of Thiruvaali, Kaliyan,
liked by
one and all. Due to His krupai, he (ThirumangaiAzhwAr) has composed
this ten
in chaste Tamil. Those who recite this will not have any of their sins
dare
approach them.
In last ten, Parakala nayaki lamented that she had lost her wrist bangles
for Him..
Now she tells the rain flies (thumbhI) not to stay on her hair as she
has
lost her feminity to Him and thereby the fragrance on her hairs.. Hence,
she
addresses the bees (thumbhIs- that were loitering on her hair and drinking
honey from her flowers (on her hair) not to stay there anymore and
go
somewhere else where they can certainly find honey and drink a lot.
Also
give some back to her too.. Very poetic ten! Beautiful!!
1. Oh ThumbHi! the One that drinks honey from the pollen of flowers!
The
Lord- Emperumaan- SarvEshwaran- the Divine Consort of Periya PiraaTTi-
the
chief of Nithyasooris- KalyaaNa guNagaNouka mahaarNavan- is the Lord
of
ThirukkaNNapuram- Sowri raja PerumAL. Go and drink the fragrance that
persists on the thuzhaay maalai on His shining crown and blow on me
that
fragrance..
2. ThumbhI! The Vedha mudhalvan! The Chjeif who is praised in Vedas!
the One
who wears PooNool on His ThirumEni; The Greatest Lord, whose Feet are
worshipped by one and all; The SarvEshwaran of ThirukkaNNapuram; Go
and
drink the fragrance that prevails on his Thuzhaay ( which is adorned
by Him)
and blow it on me..
3. Oh ThumbhI! What did you achieve by loitering and wandering on those
flowers that bloomed?(None.. the honey gets exhausted very soon. also
it is
alpam... ).. This Honey- this fragrance always stays with Him.. never
ever
gets finished.. Hence, the Nirvaahakan of all worlds- the
ThirukkaNNaperumaan- is available. Go and drink fragrance from His
ThuLasi
that He wears and blow on me.. (perhaps then only can I survive..)
4. ThumbhI! The Matsya avtaar that appeared unparalleled on the large
vast,
deep ocean; the limitless unbounded Koormam; the ferocious peerless
Narasingan; - is all Emperumaan of ThirukkaNNapuram whose Divine Beautiful
ThirumEni is enjoyed all who see Him, like dark huge clouds; Go and
drink
the fragrance that prevails on his Thuzhaay ( which is adorned by Him)
and
blow it on me..
5. ThumbhI! What good you obtained by standing on those beautiful flowers?
The Koormam (Tortoise) - Huge Beautiful One that spread everywhere
throughout the vast Universe- on huge Ocean - is the Lord of
ThirukkaNNapuram. Go and drink the fragrance that prevails on his Thuzhaay
(
which is adorned by Him) and blow it on me..
6. kOl thumbhI! the One that drinks honey from the pollen of flowers!
He
has Periya PiraaTTi in His Divine Chest! He has Strong chakrA in His
right
resplendent Hand; He is the Greatest Lord who had brought out the Universe
(BhUmi PiraaTTi) from troubled waters; He is dark hued bluish colored
Emperumaan like the Kaayampoo.(?) he is The Lord of ThirukkaNNapuram.
Sowri
rAja perumAL. Go and drink the fragrance that prevails on his Thuzhaay
(
which is adorned by Him) and blow it on me..
7. ThumbhI! He is the One who appeared as Vaamanan; He desires to appear
as
KaRki; He is the One who killed Madhu.. He is Madhavan; He is the one
who
appeared simply for protecting and rakshaNam as Chakravartthi Thirumagan.
(as Rama); He is the Father of Cupid (manmathan) and That Greatest
Lord is
the Lord of ThirukkaNNapuram; Go and drink the fragrance that prevails
on
his Thuzhaay ( which is adorned by Him) and blow it on me..
8. kOl thumbhI! Don;t blow unnecessarily on thsoe blue flowers, paady
fields; etc.,You go and drink from the yama of the asurAs; the

lustrous kireetam; and blow on me that fragrance..
9. ThumbhI! He is teh son of Nandhan; He is the One who fixes the Time

rainy
clouds; Such Greatest Emperumaan- SarvEshwaran- from the bunch of ThuLasi
that adorns His shining kireetam - go and rink the fragrance and blow
on
me..
10. ThumbhI! the chief of Thiruvaali; the one who conquers enemies;
Kaliyan-
by name; is the one who composed this ten which is on the dark hued
cloudy
colored Lord of ThirukkaNNapuram. Please blow this ten on the minds
of us to
enable us (who are the servants of Emperumaan!)sing on Him, (with this
ten)
(What a way AzhwAr finished that ten!)
1. My heart-that is separated from that marvelous infant KaNNan- who
could
unfasten the hand and leg cuffs of His Father VasudEvar the moment
he
appeared. The cool rays on the beautiful moon simply torture me- who
is
longingly waiting to obtain His krupai. In addition to those moon rays,
the
gentle breeze too enters into my tender breasts and torments. It is
going to
end.
2. My heart that longs to join the Beautiful large mountain like chested
KaNNan, who is younger brother of that conch shell like coloured Balaraman-
is completely immersed in Him. There is absolutely none to accompany
me and
be with me for moral support. The whole place (people) is sleeping.
The
whole world is sleeping; the Sun has gone.. His chariot has also
disappeared. The directions have become invisible. It is pitch dark
and I do
not what to do. Alas!
3. Except for His (KaNNan’s) cheating, there is nothing that stays with
me.
The bangles have also gone off from me. That KaNNan- who had sucked
the life
of Poothanai- will He consider and take care of my life? IT IS HIS
HABIT
RIGHT FROM HIS BIRTH, TO THINK LOW OF GIRLS AND TEASE. (Always He teases
us..vasthrabharaNam, siRRil sidhaiyEl.. Selling the bangle and buying
fruits
for Him, etc..) The blemishless moon rays heat me, and there is no
help for
me. My pair of breasts simply suffers. My heart also melts listening
to His
flute. There is none else for me who can assure me saying “maa sucha”
(anjEl
anbaar illayE..)
4. KaNNan- who blew the Conch shell and made other valiant kings tremble
with fear during the KurukshEthra battle- has not come for me. The
droplets
that emanate for the wavy oceans also are so hot for me like the flame
of
fire. The breeze that takes the watery droplets along with it also
torments
me by entering into my breasts. Only when it stops, I think I can survive.
5. the huge tall seven trees were simply hit by making hole through
them at
one stroke by Lord Rama by aiming one arrow effortlessly.. Then he
made the
whole city lankA tremble with fear; That Parama krupaaLu Rama blessed
us
during the day time.. Even that (the day time) has gone. Of my friends!
You
are also not here. There is none to help me. The Sun also has gone
into the
Oceans. I- who longs to live- have been destined to be finished off
by this
long stretched night..
6. Ramapiraan- who had bent the huge bow, has not yet come.. What can
I do?
The Sun, who showers light on us (on our lives), has also disappeared.
The
eyes of this maha paapi only have decided not to close.. I am not sure
how
long this long night going to be which is longer than kalpams…
7. The One- who had churned the huge Ocean to get PiraaTTi; who had
built
the bridge across the ocean and killed the strong rAvaNan by making
Him fall
on the ground.. That SarvEshwaran has not yet come. The hot Sun, the
young
Moon, the sound of bell that is tied to the bulls- is simply finishing
me
off in its entirety. That cowherd cute Boy KaNNan’s flute is heard
everywhere spreading every place. What else to say I don’t know..
8. The raja needhi started decaying and Jamadhagna muni was angry due
to
that. The Lord who had appeared as Parasuraman holding His “Parasu”
the axe,
has not yet come. Due to the unbearable chillness, the male bird hugs
the
female bird under its wings, and the sight of that in this dark night
tortures me. Being alone at such long dark, chilly night is simply
torturous
and I don’t know what a paapi I am to suffer this way cruelly!
9. My bangles have simply fallen off by suffering after the blissful
great
dream enjoyment I had of uniting with ThirukaNNaperumAn. This sound
of bell
tied to the bulls neck also torments me.. (Thinking of that cowherd
Boy).
Not only does this sound split my heart.. Also that night bird’s shrill
voice also tortures me and kills this paapi..
10. This ten is the lamenting suffering of the languishing girl who
has
tender breasts, longing to join the Feet of that large ocean coloured
most
merciful Lord. Kaliyan, the saviour of Thirumangai residents, composes
this
ten. Those who recite this ten, will be blessed to join the band at
Srivaikunatm and be with Nithyasooris.
Sri:
SrImathE Gopaladesika Mahadesikaya Namah:
“PerumAn vandhilan (PermAn has not come)”- lamented and cried AzhwAr-
ParakalanAyaki pitiably. Emperumaan, the most compassionate Lord has
naturally melted and shows Himself off to AzhwAr at ThirukkaNNapuram.
Now
the excited AzhwAr tells us .. He is here only for us, and saving us..
Come
and be saved.. Dearest sisters and brothers, come one and come all
and be
saved by reading this ten from AzhwAr.
1. Oh BhagawthAs, who are desirous of Bhagavath kaimkaryam! I (am blessed
to) have found out the means to get saved. Ramapiraan, who angered
on the
asurAs and made them tremble with fear (who had not known what fear
is
before that); who has strong huge mountain like shoulders; who has
the bent
bow with Him; who destroyed the band of raakshasaas. He has Veera srI
with
Him. He is the personification of the victory.. Jaya Jaya mahaaveeran..
Maha
dheeran; He has taken sankalpam to be with BhUmi PiraaTTi and Periya
PiraaTTi and is at ThirukkaNNapuram, most willingly for saving us.
Come and
let us pay obeisance to Him. (That is the only means.)
2. The Lord, who appeared riding on Garudan and chased large shouldered
Maali asuran, and made his head fall down on the ground. He made his
(Malli’s) entire group hide in a cave in lankA.. That greatest Lord
has the
strong bent Bow in His Hand. His place is ThirukkaNNapuram. Come and
let us
pay obeisance to Him. (That is the only means.)
3. Ramapiraan – who in order to save the creeper like waisted Beautiful
SitA
PiraaTTi- crossed the ocean and angrily killed strong rAvaNan of lankA-
the
strongest Lord, who killed the cruel thaatakai raakshasi when He saved
Viswaamaithrar’s yaagam with His Bow – That greatest Lord Rama’s abode
is
this ThirukkaNNapuram. Come and let us pay obeisance to Him
4. Ramapiraan built a bridge across the deep large ocean and entered
along
with the monkeys into lankA (where the cruel strong raakshasaa reside
led by
strongest rAvaNan). He made the ocean make the way for Him by bending
the
Bow.. He made the monkeys help Him by bringing in the huge mountains
and
large trees reach the ocean to build a bridge. That time, the water
droplets
that splashed reached even the skies. That greatest Lord Rama is here
at
ThirukkaNNapuram. Come and let us pay obeisance to Him
5. The Lord is in the form of Tortoise, of Lion faced Human form, of
the
forms of yaagams performed by Brahmins reciting Vedic hymns, of the
form of
Time, of the Form of Rama, the One who cut the ten heads of strong
RavaNan
of lanka surrounded by oceans, which is easily inaccessible for any
foreigner, of the form KaNNan, who made Kaaman- Manmathan. He willingly,
out
of His own will stays at ThirukkaNNapuram. Come and let us pay obeisance
to
Him
6. Oh faultless heart of mine! Don’t worry and lament. Emperumaan, who
had
made the great lankA city of rAvaNan be engulfed by his fiery anger
and fire
of destruction; who had mercifully left VaaNaasuran by just cutting
his 1000
hands and saving his life (without killing him); who had killed the
dark
legged huge kuvalayaapeetam elephant; His living place permanently
is
ThirukkaNNapuram. Come and let us pay obeisance to Him
7. The Lord who had saved most mercifully the elephant GajEndran, when
he
tried to pluck the flower for offering to Emperumaan in the middle
of a
pond, and was caught by the cruel crocodile; who had blessed the kingdom
of
lankA to the younger brother of rAvaNan (vibheeshaNan) when he simply
surrendered to Lord Rama with unflinching, unalloyed faith that He
will
accept vibheeshanan, in spiote of being from the enemy camp, especially
the
brother of the enemy. Such most compassionate Lord is SarvEshwaran
Rama, who
had finished the mareechan (who came in disguise of a deer) is here
at
ThirukkaNNapuram. Come and let us pay obeisance to Him
8. Oh my dear mind-the one who is craze after PerumAn due to your prEmam
towards Him! Don’t worry about the suffering that you have undergone.
Do you
know how it will get cured? By going to ThirukkaNNapuram where Emperumaan
willingly stays permanenetly for us. He is the One, who had crawled
in
between the two marudha trees, and made them fall on the ground; who
had
finshed off by killing the Kesi asuran, the demoness Poothanai, the
seven
bulls, the mushtika chaaNoora wrestlers, and the one who killed the
wheel
asuran (sakatAsuran) by just an effortless kick as an infant. Such
greatest
lord is He. Come and let us pay obeisance to Him.
9. The Lord who made the torrential rains useless by lifting effortlessly
with His little finger and saving the cattle; who had killed the huge
strong
seven bulls in order to unite the most beautiful Nappinnai PiraaTTi;
who is
worshipped Nithyasooris; who does always the most wonderful acts; who
went
as a messenger for pancha paaNdavaas; who killed sakatAsuran; who threw
the
dhEnukaasuran aiming at a viLaampazha tree killing another asurA was
sitting
as a viLaam fruit. That most wonderful, greatest Lord is here at
ThirukkaNNapuram. Come and let us pay obeisance to Him
10. This ten is on Emperumaan of ThirukkaNNapuram, where huge dark clouds
come and stay on top of tall buildings. He is My Swami; KaNNapiraan.
Kaliyan, who is blessed to be the recipient of Kannapiraan’s krupai,
composes this. He (Kaliyan) is the king of Thirumangai. Those who read
this
ten will rule the whole world before joining Nithyasooris and respected
by
them at SrivaikuNtam.
AzhwAr said in last ten, “Don’t worry. He is there at ThirukkaNNapuram.”.
Here he goes further. Leave alone not worrying; we should even enjoy
His
darshan at ThirukkaNNapuram as mush as how we blissfully enjoy Him
at
Paramapadham. You should read them for its rhyming words and excellent
chaste Tamil.

Emperumaan of ThirukkaNNApuram- Sri SowriRajaperumAL. Kaliyan, the
king of
Thirumangai, the one who has sharp spear in his right hand, composes
it. Oh
Bhagawathas, who would like to read this ten! You will dance singing
this
ten saving the whole world, surrounded by oceans.
An excellent ten! Great words! AzhwAr explains what he is blessed
with by
holding on to Sri Sowri Raja PerumAL.
1. Swami! The One who is the object and target of Nithya anapayinee
(one who
never separates herself from PerumAL) Periya Pirrati’s kataaksham !
The One
who enjoys everything! The Chief and Lord, who is praised as the Greatest
of
all in four Vedas! Oh ThirukkaNNapuram Swami! What is Your thinking
on
adiyEn- Your daasa bhUthan- who enjoys serving You alone and who enjoys
seeing You alone and enjoys that enjoyment alone. Please tell me of
Your
plans.
2. KaNNapuratthu ammanE! The oceans, the mountains, the seven worlds,
(saptha aavaraNams), have all become Your one garland. Oh unparalleled
One!
Leaving such greatest You, I will not consider and take refuge at all,
to
any other Devas (who claim that they will save). Never ever.
3. “maRRumOr deivam uLadhu enRu iruppaarOdu uRRilEn” I will never ever
ASSOCIATE MYSELF WITH THOSE WHO CONSIDER AND SAY THAT THERE ARE OTHER
GODS
(OTHER THAN YOU). KaNNapuratthu ammanE! There is no GOD except You.
All that
adiyEn is blessed to have learned from dEvarIr, who has taught me and
initiated me into Your ashtaaksharam is: Though it has taught me many
meanings and inner esoteric deep truths, it teaches me mainly this:
that
adiyEn is the servant (daasa bhUthan) of Your servants.
4. Oh BhUmi PiraaTTi vallabha! ThirukkaNNapuram Swami! The enjoyment
of
Periya PirraTTi, one who stays eternally on lotus flower in Your Chest!
I
have enjoyed You. I have enjoyed that effortless, marvelous act of
sucking
the life along with the breast milk of Poothanai, the cruel, raakshasi
from
her marge youthful breasts, who had come in the guise of a beautiful
young
lady to kill You with her poisonous breast milk! You finished her off
so
wonderfully. I have enjoyed thinking of that act of Yours so beautifully.
5. Oh ThirukkaNNapuratthu ammanE! I do not desire or long for the earthly
parents or any other relations. I have no love or affection to any
one else.
Hence, I have attained Your abode and You alone. “This daasa bhUthan
is mine
and My bhandhu.”- Thus You should consider me in your mind bless me
and have
krupai (mercy) on me.
6. Kannapuratthu PermALE! Those Bhagawathas, who hold on to Your Feet
and
pray for performing nithya kaimkaryam alone at Your feet, do not get
yama
kinkarars (servants of Yama) reach them or come any where near them
at all.
They simply say to those Bhagawathas “Masters! We are scared coming
near
you.” Because You protect them. Sure. You will take care of us.
7. ThirukkaNNapuratthu permALE! The One who reclines on Adhisheshan,
having
Yoga nithrA! The SarvEshwarA! The yama dhUthaas not only do not come
near
Your devotees; they even hide and are afraid of coming in front of
them.
8. ThirukkaNNapuratthu EmperumaanE! I am now thinking of our marevelous
acts
of measuring the whole universe by taking such a HUGE form; by cutting
the
strong chest of that hiraNyan with your sharp nails. What wonderful
acts
they are! This mahaa paai- adiytEn who had been committing innumerable
paapams and karmas and had not thought of this Athma rakshaNam so far-
has
now attained Your Feet and hence, is not suffering with any sorrow
or
grievance at all.
9. Kannapuratthu ammanE! You blessed me so mercifully by considering
me as
Your daasa bhUthan. Due to Your krupai, adiyEn is able to get rid of
all my
karmic disease. Further more, You have blessed and showed to the world
Your
presence and stay in adiyEn’s heart by letting me sing these pAsurams
(verses).
10. This ten Tamil pAsurams is sung by Kaliyan (who always has
ThirukkaNNapura PerumAn, the one who has to be enjoyed to the full
eyes’
content at KaNNapuram, is in his heart and who has Bhagavath kaimkaryam
as
his wealth). Those Bhagawathas who consider this ten as their wealth
and
sing them, will CERTAILNY reach and rule the Parama padham, which is
beyond the Universes.
Narayana! Narayana! Narayana!
