Dear bhagavathas,
Sri.Madhavakannan of Singapore is doing a great kaimkaryam of translating the divya prabandham in a simple English providing the basic meaning of the pasurams. His write ups are concise yet filled with great anubavams. His translations are strictly as per our sampradayam and adiyen has benefitted a lot from his wonderful translations. So far he has completed Thiruvaymozhi and Peria Thirumozhi and few thiruvandhadhis. adiyen is sure that he will continue to enlighten us with the balance prabandhams in the coming days.
Sri.Madhavakannan used to present meanings for every ten pasurams in one posting. Most of you aware that all such postings are being archeived in Sri.Mani's Srivaishnavam page and also in bhakti list egroups site. But since the postings are scattered spanning over a period of two years it may be bit difficult to browse and read them. adiyen is attempting to compile them for the benefit of bhagavathas who can read the entire Peria thirumozhi in say 11 documents.Hope this will be of use to you.
Now over to Sri.Madhavakannan and adiyen won't interfere with him and Thirumangai azhvar, hereafter.
Dasan venkat
Sri:
Dearest Sisters and Brothers, Happy makara sankaranthi! Happy Pongal!
I pray to Divya Damapthis for Their blessings and AchAryAs and ThirumangaiAzhwAr for Their anugraham for my yet another rash, brazen attempt to enter into tranlsation kaimkaryam. Please forgive me for my errors and mistakes. Anything good in it, I am not to be "blamed"; All Emperumaan's grace and AzhwAr's and AchAryan anugraham. All mistakes, blunders are mine; Please pat (slap) my back for that.
ThirumangaiAzhwAr's Periya Thirumozhi is what we are going to enjoy next. All of you know well about this Great AzhwAr, and he needs no introduction. However, for novices like me, just a quick account of his biography:
In his early days, as a king, our Lord Narayana was far from AzhwAr's
thoughts. His spiritual journey started with a commitment he made
to his sweetheart Kumudhavalli in exchange for her hand in marriage.
While most women may have asked for her suitor's everlasting love, or a
diamond ring, or a golden bangle, all our gentle lady Kumudhavalli sought
from AzhwAr was that he must wear the marks of Sri Vaishnava and serve
food (amudhu) for 1,000 Vaishnavaas everyday for a period of one
year. This service, initiated as a price for carnal pleasure,
turned into a labour of divine love towards the devotees of our Lord Narayana.
Years rolled by. AzhwAr spent all his wealth in the service of Vaishnavas.
With his coffers empty, AzhwAr could not continue the service. He
could not bear the thought of having to turn away the Vasihnavas who by
then were accustomed to blessing his abode with their presence.
The feeling of despair turned to anger at the sight of the greedy idle rich strolling around with all their gaudy and ostentatious jewels and showing contempt for the simple and devout Vasihnavas. This was enough to drive our Great AzhwAr to actions. But it was not just fame that was in store for our AzhwAr.
Our Lord Sriya: Pathih Sriman Narayana decided to intervene and turn AzhwAr away from the ways of the sword. He and His consort, our divine mother Sri, appeared before him as a newly wed couple bedecked with priceless ornaments. AzhwAr, who hid himself at ThirumaNankollai, stopped the couple and forcibly relieved them of all the jewellery.
But, there was one piece on our Lord's toe that wouldn't come off however
much AzhwAr tried. In frustration AzhwAr
put his head on the lotus feet of our Lord (!) with the intention of
biting the ring off. He asked the Lord as to what is the magic manthra
for removing? (The Lord must have mis understood that AzhwAr enquires regarding
samsaara bond!) and that sort of SaraNagathy did work! at that moment AzhwAr
was drawn in by the beauty of the lotus feet and realized
the true nature of the couple standing in front of him. The Lord
then instructed the esoteric meaning of the "magic manthra" i.e
"Thirumandhiram" or Ashtaaksharam for the Most Blessed AzhwAr, to get
initiated by the Lord Himself, with Their "thadutthaaTkoLLal".
Thus AzhwAr learnt of the efficacy of the divine name "Narayana" from our Lord Narayana Himself!
He immediately burst out to sing the poem "Periya Thirumozhi" (Great divine poem) consisting of 1,084 verses. The first ten of these verses are dedicated to the name "Narayana." These first 10 emotional verses give aid and comfort to people.
AzhwAr comes down hard on himself with intense self criticism for the
violence he had caused, though for a good cause, for having sought fleeting
worldly pleasures, for having squandered his days on mundane pursuits.
He ends each of
these ten verses with a celebration of the divine name Narayana, for
after finding this sweet name, AzhwAr declares, he was free from all the
sins and assured of the everlasting bliss at the lotus feet of our sweet
Lord Narayana (Biography passage -stole- from Sri Dileepan's
post in Dec 95- in bhakti list - Thanks, Dileepan!)
His compositions were :
1. Periya thirumozhi
2. Periya thirumadal
3. SiRiya thirumadal
4. Thiru nedunthANdakam (TNT)
5. Thiru KurunthANdakam(TKT)
6.Thiru vezhuk kurrirukkai.
His pAsurams are marvellous; excellent and have unsurpassed beauty in them. ParAsara Bhattar made use of his TNT to win over his counter part, an advaitin scholar in his arguments and later the advaitin became his disciple 'nam jeeyar'.
Sri RanganAtha himself heard and was greatly pleased with that argument re-enacted from Bhattar quoting from TNT (Please read excellent posts of Sri V. SadagOpan on TNT and TKT duringFeb 96 from Bhakti Archives - a real feast to each one of you).
Thirumangai AzhwAr (a KING, a person who had all kingly royal comforts) walked all the way and VISITED almost all temples. He is simply GREAT, my dearest brothers and sisters. He is JUST S U P E R B AzhwAr. His wordings are his outpourings straight from his heart.
It is told and declared by Tamil Poets of all kinds that His paasurams contain ezhutthu (writing), sol,(words) poruL, (meanings), yaappu (Grammar), aNi (figure of sppech?) etc.. His songs are so great and so nice to recite! It is simple and quite lucid too for reciters and those who know even little Tamil, can understand the lovely emotional outbursts of AzhwAr and his bhakti.
His paasurams depict mainly the archaavathaarams of Divya dEsams, and when He enjoys Them with the descrition of Divya Desams, they simply immerse us in unbounded limitless bliss and pErAnandham.
Thai AzhwAr, when Kumudavalli had asked him to become a Srivaishnava, got his pancha samskaaram done by ThirunaRaiyoor Nambhi. He got his Thiru ManthrOpadEsam from Sri SowrirAja PerumAL; AzhwAr praises These Lords individually with 100 pAsurams! Nambhi naamam sollil NamO NaaraayaNamE".
This AzhwAr had Great regards for NammAzhwAr. He appealed and requested Sri Ranganathan for lsitening to Thiruvaaymozhi from Kaarthigai sukla Ekadasi and now all Sri vaishnava Divya Desams celebrate this uthasavam of reciting Thiruvaaymozhi.
The essence of Periya Thirumozhi is: The worldly life is sorrowful;
It can be cured only by the grace of Sriman Narayanan; Hence, get saved
by paying obeisance to Him at His Divya Desams (106 Thiruppathis on this
Earth). AzhwAr visited almost about 80 Thiruppathis, all on foot; He sang
1253 passurams, next only to NammAzhwAr; (but NammAzhwAr never went
to any Divya Desams; The Lords came to Him!)… Thirumangai AzhwAr padi
padi paraparappaay Thirndhaar…He declares: If one surrenders to Sriman
Narayanan, "enRum vinaiyaagina saaragilaavE"… (Never will sins accrue to
your account!)..
This prabhandham should be read, re-read, re-re read and enjoyed! So
nice are they… Last Kaarthigai Kritthigai nakshathram (during AzhwAr Thirunakshathram)
as instructed by our KaNNan Swami, I could recite Periya Thirumozhi for
ten days preceding his Thirunakshathram and completed on his birthday.
It was a great feeling of having read his lovely Periya Thirumozhi. Dearest
Sisters and Brothers, my attempting to write these translation is: 1. Those
who do not know Tamil, can get to know the meanings, and enjoy. 2. Those
who wish to know the meanings (though we all know Tamil, it is still difficult
to understand the
meanings) and 3. Being a self-centred person, I myself would like to
enjoy them, by reading the pAsurams and writing these translations.
May I request for all your aseervaathams and wishes for such a rash attempt? (Fools rush in where angels fear to tread).
Thirumangai AzhwAr ThiruvadigaLE SaraNam
"thunjum bOdhu azhaimin.. thuyar varil ninaimin… thuyarileer sollinum nanRaam… (While you sleep, call… or when you feel depressed and sorrowful… call… or no worries.. no problems.. stilll it is so sweet to utter…. Call "Narayana Narayana" says "Thirumangai AzhwAr)
1. The Lord- who has lifted effortlessly the mountain as an umbrella,
saving
the cattle and cowherd folks from torrential downpour- Swami- One who
had
won in the battle against asurAs with His mighty Divine Bow- is now
sought
after by this gentle breeze too, that has come to my place and pierces
thorough me, like the fire ball. What can I do?
2. The Lord- who is of dark black cloud colour; and is of the cool vast
ocean; - I adore SarvEshwaran, whose thuLasi garland adorned Divine
beautiful chest. Is that why I am suffering from this punishment of
languishing from the cool breeze that comes from the droplets form
those
dark clouds, which aggravates my suffering further?
3. The cool rays of that bright moon torture my body, which is losing
the
wrist bangles and the fair complexion due to my suffering. What can
I do? It
appears as if the most fragrant thuLasi garland of SarvEshwaran (who
is of
the bright white form of wavy ocean) appears to be saying “Have you
already
started for coming here?”
4. When the aayarpaadi was engulfed with the darkness and the fear of
Kamsan, there the cunning demon Poothanai entered as mother to feed
her
poisonous breast milk to KaNNan, who sucked her poisonous milk along
with
her life too. Are these cool moon rays roaring towards me aping great
Kutti
KaNNan?
5. Is the ocean lamenting with noisy waves because the moon, born of
the
ocean, is left loitering in the sky, by SarvEshwaran, who effortlessly
tore
the strong body of HiraNyan, into two pieces, when He appeared as Lord
Nrusimhan, for saving Prahalada?
6. The Lord of great valor, went to the enemy’s den of lankA, and destroyed
the city with his Divine Bow. The shrill voice of this anRil bird (from
that
nest, made of lotus stems, flower petals, stems etc.) praising the
valour of
His is torturing me further terribly.
7. The arrow from that cupid, who has five arrows and the sugar cane
bow,
torments me as its only target. Is this the punishment for paying my
obeisance to SarvEshwaran who shows Himself on GarudA; who is of the
colour
of blue hue?
8. My heart longs and searches for SarvEshwaran, and aids my prEmam
(love)
for Him. His most beautiful, most fragrant thuLasi garland on His Chest
has
also become an object of my mind. This cool breeze, also tortures me
(along
with that fragrance) and alas! I cannot last any more.
9. keNdaiyoN kaNum thuyilum enniRam/
paNdu paNdu pOl okkum* mikka seerth/
thoNdar itta poon thuLavin vaasamE/
vaNdu koNdu vandhu oodhumaagilE.
If the bees drink the fragrance of thuLasi leaves offered by Srivaishnavas
(of auspicious attributes), and blow towards me, my large darting,
fish like
eyes, will automatically close and sleep peacefully. My fair tender-mango
complexion will also be back.
10. When PANdavaas suffered, He went as messenger and about such
(sowlabhyam) greatness of SarvEshwaran, this ten is composed. It is
sung by
Kaliyan, the chief of Thirumangai. Those who recite will not have any
grievance /sorrows at all.
1. He, who had lifted Govardhana Mountain effortlessly as an umbrella
to
stop the torrential downpour sent by DevEndhran; and who had danced
with
cowherd women has haunted my memories. In front of my house, those
“anRil”
birds from those trees are torturing me with their shrill (lamenting)
voices
too. Who can save those birds from those nests?
2. He, who had broken even the heavy kurundha tree; who had angered
on the
seven bulls and killed them; who had tore open the Kesi asuran’s mouth;
who
had broken the tusk of Kuvalayaapeetam elephant; who has sucked the
poisonous breast of Poothanai along with her life- Such Greatest KaNNan,
(who has such divine mouth to suck Poothnai’s life too) torments me;
Not
only does He trouble; also the music from Balaraman’s flute also torments
me
with greater vigor.
3. I have been always contemplating on that most fragrant Thirutthuzhaay
garland that adorns Emperumaan, who had killed the two wrestlers sent
by
Kamsan and killed the sender Kamsan too; This gentle evening breeze
also
searches the place where I stay and come to torture me. The sounds
of those
huge bulls also further aggravate my sufferings greater.
4. Whenever I think of those two unparalleled Feet of Ramapiraan who
had
sent the arrow through even trees, that dark deep blue ocean’s wave
roars
heavily. In addition to that the sea breeze trouble me. What can I
do to
overcome these sufferings? (Only He can help)
5. These ocean waves’ roars; the anRil birds’ sounds troubling me; the
bangles that slip off from my wrists; - all these happen only after
my
getting lost to KaNNapiraan, the Divine Consort of Nappinnai PiraaTTi,
(who
has dark long black tresses, who has the most beautiful gait like swan,
who
has most gorgeous PeethAmbaram (silk cloth) around her waist).
6. SarvEshwaran, - Our Swami- who has the Divine Sanghu and ChakrA,
has
called us for the endless uniting experience like a dream. Except for
my
friend and I, the whole world is sleeping. This hen also does not crow
for
announcing the dawn’s arrival. This dark night appears to be never
ending.
7. The way Manmanthan troubles me is ineffable. The dark, blue hued
ocean
like form -KaNNan is my beloved husband. His son Manmathan is also
my son.
But he (manmathan), coming to talk of, is terribly torturing me throwing
“virhahaagni” (fire of pangs of separation) on me. My tender breasts
grow
thinking of that blue gem stone like Divine Bodied SarvEshwaran.
8. Emeprumaan, who shows Himself at ThirummaalirunchOlai, has stolen
the
feminine shyness from my heart. He has never thought of me- not even
once.
This Sun- why does he not come out? Where had he gone hiding? If this
body
of ours perishes with this suffering like this, I think it will do
good to
us. (means, we need not suffer any more after death)
9. Oh friend! Do not think that we can wait till He comes, considering
our
feminine nature and our Athma guNAs, instead of suffering from Manmathan’s
torturous arrows. Shall we go towards where He is and let us both pay
our
obeisance to the dark cloud bodied Lord and enjoy His Beauty with our
eyes
to the fullest?
10. This ten is on SarvEshwaran, the ever-victorious One, who killed
seven
bulls at the same time. Kaliyan, the king of Thirumangai, composes
it.
Those, who recite this garland of ten pAsurams, will have NO SORROWS.
To
tell further, the place (world) where they reside will have no grievance
at
all.
1. In mahabharathayuddham (KurukshEthra battlefield) with the dense population of kings and warriors on the field, He drove the chariot of Arjunan; He also had Mahabhali captive; He had reached lankA surrounded by wavy oceans and destroyed the city; - Having desired for such Greatest Emperumaan, I am blessed to have lost my fair wheatish complexion of my body and the bangles from my wrist. See!
2. Oh friend (who is affectinate towards me like my mother) Swami- My master- Seshi is always in my heart. He is the PuNdareekaakshan (red lotus eyed Lord), who had krupai on elephant GajEndran. He has huge strong shoulders. He is Chief of everyone and the Primordial Chief. Singing His divine names and dancing to that song, my breasts have regained their original beauty without any more grievances.
3. Oh my dear friend! I know this most merciful mahaanubhaavan. He is the One who had taught Vedas to Chathu mukha brahmA (four faced brahmA). He once, entered into my heart, and desired for my golden bangles alone, taken away the same and left my heart. What has He got in His mind? I don’t know.
4. The Lord, who reclines in the most fragrant Thirukkudanthai Divya Desam; the One who as a small Kutti KaNNan, walked with small steps, relished stealing and eating the fragrant tasty butter- will it be right to utter that “we don’t know that such Greatest sweetest Emperumaan”. (Certainly not)
5. SarvEshwaran, the most merciful One, Parama dhayaaLu, Parama krupaaLu- makes the devotees (who pay their obeisance to Him always) equal to Him (meaning at SrivaikuNtam, taking the same suddha sathva form and enjoy Him, from nearby; keeping them in His lOkam- Paramapadham- Nithya vibUthi- saalOkyam; saaroopyam and saameepyam). Hence, we have also paid our obeisance to Him, holding on to Him with an unflinching faith, placing Him in our hearts.
6. When he grew huge and raised His leg to measure the skies, Devas (including BrahmA) grabbed the opportunity to enjoy paying their obeisance to most wondrous act of Emperumaan, by folding their hands like a lotus flower bud. Such Greatest most wonderful Emperumaan- Lord KaNNan (the One who gives me immense happiness always)- Bhagawathas have Him in their hearts. They are blessed to obtain divine happiness to the fullest extent.
7. In spite of KaNNan residing in my heart, my bangles still fall off; I do not know and why does it happen? We protected our feminity quite well, I think. When such is the case, will we go singing his Divine names at all Divya Desams, where He resides? (Sure we will. That is the reason for our being born is the meaning )
8. pAdOmE! Enthai perumAnaip* paadi ninRu/ AdOmE? Aayiram pErAnaip*
pEr ninaindhu/
choodOmE? Soodum thuzhaayalangaL* soodi naam/ koodOmE? Koodak kuRippaagil
nan nenjE!
Oh my friendly mind! Will we not sing the glories of our sarvEshwaran? Singing His thousand divine names, to the full satisfaction of our mouths, will we not dance? Contemplating on His greatest divine names, won’t we adorn our heads with the most fragrant thuLasi garland that He has worn? And if we have that thought alone, will we (who have the desire to unite with Him) not unite with Him? (Definitely we will.)
9. my friendly mind! We have paid our obeisance to the Emperumaan of Thiruvaali, who is our Swami- our SarvEshwaran. Thus, we are blessed with: by adorning the Lotus Feet of SarvEshwaran (with most fragrant flowers), who is of the dark cloud colour therby resulting in the removal of our incorrigible sins that have accumulated in huge quantum from time immemorial.
10. This ten pAsurams as a garland in tamil, composed by Kaliyan, who is blessed to sing such great ten by Emperumaan (having thousand names). Those who learn this will be blessed to sing the thousand divine names of the Lord and they won’t be satisfied and contented with that. They would love to sing more and more. Not just that. They will also be blessed to rule this world. For those who listen to this ten, there will be no sorrows on this earth at all.
1. There was waters everywhere during praLayam, and it engulfed even
deva
lOkams. They (Devas) went and prayed to the Lord (as there is none
else
above Him to save them) "There is no rakshakam for us" (maRRu emakkOr
saraN
illai). "I will be your rakshakan (araN aavan) said the most merciful
Lord.
He took a Huge Fish form (mathsyam), making the wavy oceans under His
stomach get churned; having the mountains on His back. Pay obeisance
to this
SarvEshwaran all times without fail, oh mind! (maRavaadhu iRainju en
mananE)
2. The most strongest, shining Vasuki snake became the rope for the
Lord.
Sending shivers through everyone on the earth and Deva lokams, the
Lord, (in
order to enable Devas and asurAs to churn the milky ocean), took the
Huge
manthara mountain on His Back, as Koorma avtaar (Huge Tortoise), so
that the
mountain will not topple. Inaddition, He also held the mountain firm.
Such
Greatest SarvEshwaran is our unparalleled Rakshakan, the most merciful
Lord,
who is the Divine Consort of PiraaTTi. (Thirumaal namakkOr araNE..)
3. Emperumaan took HUGE Varaaha (Boar) avtaar, with the cool, sweet,
moon,
the hot sun, Devas, the seven Deva lokams, the mEru mountain, the six
kula
parvathams (mountains), seven oceans, and all others at the same time
staying underneath His toe nails (kaal kuLambu). (This is to imagine
/perceive the size of Boar). He grew so Huge. He is the Primary Cause
of
these worlds. He is the Savior of these worlds. (Rakshakan). This Varaha
moorthy is the Lord- the King, enslaving and ruling us. (Adhi mun yEnamAgi
araNaaya moorthy- adhu nammai Alum arasE)..
4. This PerumAn is the One who took Nrusimha avtaar, when Prahalada
was
undergoing suffering. The flower garland that hung upto the thighs,
moving
from side to side; the ruddy lined two eyes, sending fiery sparks from
them
with anger and ferocity, He came as Narasinga Roopi. He tore effortlessly
the strongest body of HiraNyan (who had obtained his strength from
chathur
mukha brahmA with his penance) and killed him. The flood of blood from
HiraNyan's body became three times the deluge waters during mahApraLayam
even. (read this pAsuram with rhyming Tamil- and the strong words to
reflect
the ferocity and speed of Narasimhan) (piLavazha vitta kutta madhvaiya
moodu
peru neeril mummai peridhE)
5. Emperumaan, as little dwarf (in Vaamana avtaar), walked into the
yaagasaalai of mahAbhali, the strong one about whom everyone on the
earth
and in Deva lokam was fearing. He became a small brahmachari, who recite
Vedas and who knows the Vedic truth, who recite Vedas and perform
ansuhatanams in accordance with vedas, and begged three measures of
earth
from bhali. While obtaining what he asked for, He grew SO HUGE and
tall
taking Trivikrama avtaar, enabling Chathur mukha brahMA and the Moon
paying
their obeisance at His Feet (in the sky) from their respective positions.
This Lotus Feet that had crossed all the upper worlds is the only one
that
can save us. (antharam yEzhinoodu selavuyttha paadham adhu nammai Alum
arasE.)
6. SarvEshwaran, (The Divine Consort of BhUmi PiraaTTi, The Chief of
Periya
PiraaTTi, the Nirvaahakan of the most Beautiful NeeLa dEvi, the One
who took
the entire Universe during praLayam in His stomach and brought it back
after, through His large mouth), took ParasurAma avtaar, and destroyed
the
21 generations of adharmic (non- virtuous) kings, with His Parasu (plough)
by walking in the battle fields. This Emperumaan alone saves us at
all
times, enslaving us. We are His eternal servants is the meaning.
7. In order to separate PiraaTTi (SitA- the darting, spear like eyed,
most
beautiful One), rAvaNan hiding near the hut (parNa saalai) sent the
maareechan as a most beuatiful golden deer. "Oh such a great looking
wonderful pretty deer"- wondered SitA PiraaTTi and Rama piraan killed
this
deer, chasing the same. Also He destroyed the lankA of most cruel rAvaNan
by
aiming string of arrows in the battlefield. This most strongest merciful
Lord, is the Divine Consort of Periya PiraaTTi (who is our mediatrix
recommending our case to this SarvEshwaran). This Lord if our unparalleled
Protector.
8. When the darkness engulfed the seven worlds once, Devas, not knowing
the
cause and solution for the darkness, wondering as to what is the reason
for
the same, when will it ever end, - the most beautiful (yezhil) sacred
Vedas
had been snatched away and captured by asuran and disappeared. The
Lord,
again blessed and saved the Devas by taking Hamsa avtaar (Swan) got
the
Vedas back and blessed Devas and Sages with Vedic Dharma saashtrams.
This
Parama jyOthi, is the King who always rules us. We are His servants
eternally.
9. Oh devotes who are interested to know Bhagavath vishayam! Pay obeisance
to Emperumaan without considering that there is some other hold for
us other
than Him. His leelAs are: He sucked the poisonous breast of Poothanai,
who
had actually come in disguise to kill the infant Kutti KaNNan; He got
Himself tied down to a mortar by His mother YashOdhA and he crawled
dragging
the strong mortar also along with Him, went in between the two trees
to
break them. Such greatest most wonderful Emperumaan alone is the One
who can
bless us to get all our sins removed. It is certain.
10. This ten is about the greatness of Srivallabhan, Our Master- the
One who
had sent the fiery arrows from his Divine Bow at lanKA and crushed
the same;
who had killed the huge strong, cruel Kuvalayaapeetam elephant. It
is
composed by Kaliyan of Thirumangai. Those who sing this ten as their
pastime, will be blessed to rule the Parama padham
Let us get into the scene and witness the fight and ENJOY..

earth
in the forest to live there. )
Her friend: Know well clearly that the Lotus Feet (of the One who resided
in
the forest) are the flowers that adorn the Nithyasooris. (He is The

Is there any grivance for us, as He is the ParipoorNan?

Her friend: See. He, the One who grew at Ayarpadi (among cowgerd folks)
is

in

curd
and ate. He was talked about everyone in this world surrounded by oceans.
(What Lord are You talking about- a robber?)
Her friend: Accharyam! Most wonderful thing! The stomach that you are
talking about as the one that eaten the stolen curd is the same stomach
that
had swallowed the seven worlds and still had lots and lots of space
for
other worlds too. (Such is the Greateness of our most merciful Lord
who
saves us during mahApraLyam also. Is there any grievance for us?)

Her friend: The One who enjoyed eating the most fragrant butter has

swallowing all worlds surrounded by oceans.

One girl: Look at Him. He got Himself tied down by a small rope. That
too-
by an illiterate dark haried cowherd woman (YashOdhai PiraaTTi). What
a Lord
is He to be tied down by her with a small rope!
Her friend: Though He was the One who got Himself tied down by a small
rope,
he can not be contemplated (His greatness can not be understood) even
by
Devas that He is of this Greatness. (Though He is such a sowabhyan
for
cowherd woman, He is incomprehensible and inaccessible for those who
think,
they can see Him with their own efforts.)

One girl: oh friend! With the drums getting beaten, those who see get
immense happiness, KaNNan danced in the streets of Ayarpaadi, with
the pot..
Look at Him.
Her friend: Though he danced with the pot in the street junction, He
is
still inaccessible by Devas at all times.

One girl: Oh friend! He made Himself available for those Pancha pANdavAs
(five pANdavAs), and went as the messenger for them to ask DuryOdhanan
for
sportion of earth for PaaNdavAs. Look at Him, being simply talked about
and
humiliated by DuryOdhanan. (Such a sowlabhyan is He).
Her friend: Though He was talked about by DuryOdhanan, when he went
as the
messenger, He swallowed the world surrounded by oceans and spat it
out
during praLayam. (He saves us at all times. )

One girl: oh friend! Look at the way he drove the chariot at the driver
for
arjunan in the battle field and supported enabling Arjunan to destroy
the
kings in the battle field.
Her friend: Though He drove the chariot for the king (Arjunan), see
Him
sitting on top of the heards of those kings (PaaNdavaas). (meaning:
He is
the king of Kings, though He was such a sowlabhyan to drive the chariot)

One girl: oh frield! Look at Him walking in such a small dwarf, pitied
by
those who see Him, walking into the yaagasaalai of bhali and begged
him for
the measures of earth. (what a Lord is He!)
Her friend: Though He had begged for the earth in the yaagasaalai of
Bhali,
see Him. He is the Vibhu (viNdu- VishNu- One who has manifested everywhere),
who is all seven worlds and is even beyond! (One who was looked down
upon by
Bhali is beyond everyone and everything and cannot be understood or
seen by
anyone in His Fullest entirety.

(an excellent ending of this ten by our Great AzhwAr)
One girl: oh friend: Cunningly, He cheated Bhali and got the three worlds
from Bhali. He is The One who reclines in the milky Ocean, having his
Yoga
nitthrA thinking as to how and what all good that He can do to us.
Look at
Him, who has come to ThiruvEmkatam also.
Her friend: See. The One who reclines in Milky Ocean who has come down
to
ThiruvEmkatam is the One who is also in the heart of Kaliyan also.
1. “ponmalaiyaik kaaNaadhaar kaN enRum kaNNalla”- This most merciful
Lord
for the sake of Devas, churned the huge ocean with the Vaasuki snake
as
rope, and with mEru mountain as the center stick (matthu) to get the
Nectar.
He did not even bother that the Ocean that He is churning is the same
where
He reclines. That is His Greatness. Such SwamI, with gem decked garlands
on
His Chest, rides majestically and beautifully on GarudA like the Golden
Mountain moving. The eyes that do not enjoy seeing Him, never deserve
to be
called eyes. Let us know. (kariyavanaik kaaNaadha kaNNenna kaNNO?-
from
Vadavaraiyai song.)
2. “thoNdarkku iniyaanaik kELaach chevigaL cheviyalla kEttAmE”..- The
most
sweetest SarvEshwaran- Vaamanan, One who had entered into the yaagasaalai
of
MahAbhali and begged for three measures of earth; measured the worlds
with
His Feet as Trivikraman; - One who is like the Blue hued gem stone-
so
beautiful and shining; - is so sweet for enjoyment by Bhagawathas.
The ears
that do not hear the glories about such GREATEST Lord are not fit to
be
called ears at all. We have heard this many times.
3. “avan perumai pEsaadhaar pEcchu enRum pEcchalla kEttAmE.. “- The
Most
pristinely purest Lord- One who is praised by “authorless” Vedas;-
One who
on his own mercifully shows Himself at Thiruvaali;- One who had sucked
the
breast of Poothanai (who had come to kill Him with her poisonous milk)
and
then sucked the milk from His mother with his mouth- is the One who
is
highly compassionate and loving towards devotees. Those talks that
are not
on the glory such Greatest Lord are not called talks. – We had heard
elders
saying this.
4. “aarvatthaal paadaathaar paattu enRum paattalla kEttAmE.”.-The Lord,
who
had effortlessly torn the strong chest of HiraNyan with His sharp nails
as
Nrusimhan;- who is the nirvaahakan of Nithyasooris-is the one who wears
the
most fragrant Thirutthuzhaay (thuLasi) garland on His Chest;- “The
songs
that are not sung on such greatest Lord with full of devotion and love
for
Him are not sings at all” as heard by us.
5. “shankhu yEndhum kaiyAnaik kaithozhaak kaiyalla kaNdOmE..”- The Lord,
whose beautiful Divine Body colour is like the dark deep bluish ocean,
the
blue hued huge mountain, the just plucked fresh beautiful blue flower
is the
One who has Divine Conch in his resplendent Hand. The hands that do
not
perform “anjali” (in folded hands – both palms glued to each other)
to Him,
are not hands at all. Let us know.
6. “uLLaadhar uLLatthai uLLamaagak koLLOmE”- the Thirutthuzhaay (thUalsi),
alari, the lotus, the vilvam, and all such beautiful fragrant flowers-
when
one sees, if his mind does not think that these flowers are to be offered
at
the golden like lotus Feet of the Greatest Lord, - who had taken Hamsa
avtaar; who had taken Varaaha avtaar to bring back BhUmi from deep
waters-
are not be called minds at all.
7. “thoNdaraay ninRu ninaiyaadhaar * nenjenRum nenjalla kaNdaamE.. “-
The
noisy ocean, dark blue flower like blue hued Lord SarvEshwaran- at
whose
Lotus Feet, those who do not offer flowers, and who do not consider
themselves as His eternal servants with their minds are not to be considered
minds at all. Let us know.
8. “sengkaNediyaanaich chindhitthu aRiyaadhaar* enRum aRiyaadhaar
kaNdaamE..”- SarvEshwaran is the ruddy-eyed Lord, who enjoyed eating
the
most fragrant butter hung and stored by dark haired cowherd women.
Those who
do not think of such Greatest Lord are always illiterate. Let us know.
9. “maanidarallar enRu enmanatthE vaitthEnE”-Those who do not get enslaved
and not consider themselves as eternal servants of SarvEshwaran, who
killed
the seven strong bulls for the well laid out, dark darting, large eyed
Nappinnaip PiraaTTi, who has the most beautiful ThirumaalirunchOlai
as His
eternal place of residence, are not HUMAN BEINGS at all in my mind-
I am
firm about it- says AzhwAr.
10. The Lotus Feet of SarvEshwaran, having the strong Divine ChakrA
in His
resplendent Hand, who is the divine consort of PiraaTTi MahAlakshmi,
who
dispels karmas (paapams and puNyams) are fit for everyone to worship
and pay
obeisance at. About this, Kaliyan, having the sharp spear in his hand,
having the Lord’s Lotus Feet on his head, has sung this garland of
Tamil
pAsurams. (Oh Bhagawathas,) dance singing this ten merrily!
