Dear bhagavathas,
Sri.Madhavakannan of Singapore is doing a great kaimkaryam of translating the divya prabandham in a simple English providing the basic meaning of the pasurams. His write ups are concise yet filled with great anubavams. His translations are strictly as per our sampradayam and adiyen has benefitted a lot from his wonderful translations. So far he has completed Thiruvaymozhi and Peria Thirumozhi and few thiruvandhadhis. adiyen is sure that he will continue to enlighten us with the balance prabandhams in the coming days.
Sri.Madhavakannan used to present meanings for every ten pasurams in one posting. Most of you aware that all such postings are being archeived in Sri.Mani's Srivaishnavam page and also in bhakti list egroups site. But since the postings are scattered spanning over a period of two years it may be bit difficult to browse and read them. adiyen is attempting to compile them for the benefit of bhagavathas who can read the entire Peria thirumozhi in say 11 documents.Hope this will be of use to you.
Now over to Sri.Madhavakannan and adiyen won't interfere with him and Thirumangai azhvar, hereafter.
Dasan venkat
Sri:
Dearest Sisters and Brothers, Happy makara sankaranthi! Happy Pongal!
I pray to Divya Damapthis for Their blessings and AchAryAs and ThirumangaiAzhwAr for Their anugraham for my yet another rash, brazen attempt to enter into tranlsation kaimkaryam. Please forgive me for my errors and mistakes. Anything good in it, I am not to be "blamed"; All Emperumaan's grace and AzhwAr's and AchAryan anugraham. All mistakes, blunders are mine; Please pat (slap) my back for that.
ThirumangaiAzhwAr's Periya Thirumozhi is what we are going to enjoy next. All of you know well about this Great AzhwAr, and he needs no introduction. However, for novices like me, just a quick account of his biography:
In his early days, as a king, our Lord Narayana was far from AzhwAr's
thoughts. His spiritual journey started with a commitment he made
to his sweetheart Kumudhavalli in exchange for her hand in marriage.
While most women may have asked for her suitor's everlasting love, or a
diamond ring, or a golden bangle, all our gentle lady Kumudhavalli sought
from AzhwAr was that he must wear the marks of Sri Vaishnava and serve
food (amudhu) for 1,000 Vaishnavaas everyday for a period of one
year. This service, initiated as a price for carnal pleasure,
turned into a labour of divine love towards the devotees of our Lord Narayana.
Years rolled by. AzhwAr spent all his wealth in the service of Vaishnavas.
With his coffers empty, AzhwAr could not continue the service. He
could not bear the thought of having to turn away the Vasihnavas who by
then were accustomed to blessing his abode with their presence.
The feeling of despair turned to anger at the sight of the greedy idle rich strolling around with all their gaudy and ostentatious jewels and showing contempt for the simple and devout Vasihnavas. This was enough to drive our Great AzhwAr to actions. But it was not just fame that was in store for our AzhwAr.
Our Lord Sriya: Pathih Sriman Narayana decided to intervene and turn AzhwAr away from the ways of the sword. He and His consort, our divine mother Sri, appeared before him as a newly wed couple bedecked with priceless ornaments. AzhwAr, who hid himself at ThirumaNankollai, stopped the couple and forcibly relieved them of all the jewellery.
But, there was one piece on our Lord's toe that wouldn't come off however
much AzhwAr tried. In frustration AzhwAr
put his head on the lotus feet of our Lord (!) with the intention of
biting the ring off. He asked the Lord as to what is the magic manthra
for removing? (The Lord must have mis understood that AzhwAr enquires regarding
samsaara bond!) and that sort of SaraNagathy did work! at that moment AzhwAr
was drawn in by the beauty of the lotus feet and realized
the true nature of the couple standing in front of him. The Lord
then instructed the esoteric meaning of the "magic manthra" i.e
"Thirumandhiram" or Ashtaaksharam for the Most Blessed AzhwAr, to get
initiated by the Lord Himself, with Their "thadutthaaTkoLLal".
Thus AzhwAr learnt of the efficacy of the divine name "Narayana" from our Lord Narayana Himself!
He immediately burst out to sing the poem "Periya Thirumozhi" (Great divine poem) consisting of 1,084 verses. The first ten of these verses are dedicated to the name "Narayana." These first 10 emotional verses give aid and comfort to people.
AzhwAr comes down hard on himself with intense self criticism for the
violence he had caused, though for a good cause, for having sought fleeting
worldly pleasures, for having squandered his days on mundane pursuits.
He ends each of
these ten verses with a celebration of the divine name Narayana, for
after finding this sweet name, AzhwAr declares, he was free from all the
sins and assured of the everlasting bliss at the lotus feet of our sweet
Lord Narayana (Biography passage -stole- from Sri Dileepan's
post in Dec 95- in bhakti list - Thanks, Dileepan!)
His compositions were :
1. Periya thirumozhi
2. Periya thirumadal
3. SiRiya thirumadal
4. Thiru nedunthANdakam (TNT)
5. Thiru KurunthANdakam(TKT)
6.Thiru vezhuk kurrirukkai.
His pAsurams are marvellous; excellent and have unsurpassed beauty in them. ParAsara Bhattar made use of his TNT to win over his counter part, an advaitin scholar in his arguments and later the advaitin became his disciple 'nam jeeyar'.
Sri RanganAtha himself heard and was greatly pleased with that argument re-enacted from Bhattar quoting from TNT (Please read excellent posts of Sri V. SadagOpan on TNT and TKT duringFeb 96 from Bhakti Archives - a real feast to each one of you).
Thirumangai AzhwAr (a KING, a person who had all kingly royal comforts) walked all the way and VISITED almost all temples. He is simply GREAT, my dearest brothers and sisters. He is JUST S U P E R B AzhwAr. His wordings are his outpourings straight from his heart.
It is told and declared by Tamil Poets of all kinds that His paasurams contain ezhutthu (writing), sol,(words) poruL, (meanings), yaappu (Grammar), aNi (figure of sppech?) etc.. His songs are so great and so nice to recite! It is simple and quite lucid too for reciters and those who know even little Tamil, can understand the lovely emotional outbursts of AzhwAr and his bhakti.
His paasurams depict mainly the archaavathaarams of Divya dEsams, and when He enjoys Them with the descrition of Divya Desams, they simply immerse us in unbounded limitless bliss and pErAnandham.
Thai AzhwAr, when Kumudavalli had asked him to become a Srivaishnava, got his pancha samskaaram done by ThirunaRaiyoor Nambhi. He got his Thiru ManthrOpadEsam from Sri SowrirAja PerumAL; AzhwAr praises These Lords individually with 100 pAsurams! Nambhi naamam sollil NamO NaaraayaNamE".
This AzhwAr had Great regards for NammAzhwAr. He appealed and requested Sri Ranganathan for lsitening to Thiruvaaymozhi from Kaarthigai sukla Ekadasi and now all Sri vaishnava Divya Desams celebrate this uthasavam of reciting Thiruvaaymozhi.
The essence of Periya Thirumozhi is: The worldly life is sorrowful;
It can be cured only by the grace of Sriman Narayanan; Hence, get saved
by paying obeisance to Him at His Divya Desams (106 Thiruppathis on this
Earth). AzhwAr visited almost about 80 Thiruppathis, all on foot; He sang
1253 passurams, next only to NammAzhwAr; (but NammAzhwAr never went
to any Divya Desams; The Lords came to Him!)… Thirumangai AzhwAr padi
padi paraparappaay Thirndhaar…He declares: If one surrenders to Sriman
Narayanan, "enRum vinaiyaagina saaragilaavE"… (Never will sins accrue to
your account!)..
This prabhandham should be read, re-read, re-re read and enjoyed! So
nice are they… Last Kaarthigai Kritthigai nakshathram (during AzhwAr Thirunakshathram)
as instructed by our KaNNan Swami, I could recite Periya Thirumozhi for
ten days preceding his Thirunakshathram and completed on his birthday.
It was a great feeling of having read his lovely Periya Thirumozhi. Dearest
Sisters and Brothers, my attempting to write these translation is: 1. Those
who do not know Tamil, can get to know the meanings, and enjoy. 2. Those
who wish to know the meanings (though we all know Tamil, it is still difficult
to understand the
meanings) and 3. Being a self-centred person, I myself would like to
enjoy them, by reading the pAsurams and writing these translations.
May I request for all your aseervaathams and wishes for such a rash attempt? (Fools rush in where angels fear to tread).
Thirumangai AzhwAr ThiruvadigaLE SaraNam
"thunjum bOdhu azhaimin.. thuyar varil ninaimin… thuyarileer sollinum nanRaam… (While you sleep, call… or when you feel depressed and sorrowful… call… or no worries.. no problems.. stilll it is so sweet to utter…. Call "Narayana Narayana" says "Thirumangai AzhwAr)
Since Emperumaan shows Himself at Divya Desams (due to His Parama
kaaruNyam and Sowalbhyathvam) only for His BhakthAs to be blessed with
the darshan, and obtain His Grace, AzhwAr runs from Divya Desam to Divya
Desam to enjoy
Him, to the fullest extent. In this ten, he bursts out on the Lord
of ThiruppuLLam poothankudi.
1. “aRivadhu aRiyaa anaitthum udiayaan; ennai Aludaiyaan”He is unparalleled

Thirumangai AzhwAr longs to perform kaimkaryam at Emperumaan's Lotus
Feet. He prays to the Lord PundarIkaakshan of ThiruveLLaRai for removal
of all obstacles for that kaimkaryam.
1. Oh SwamI! the One who is at ThiruveLLaRai, where the gentle breeze
enters and blooms the jasmine flowers and spreads the fragrance everywhere
along the corridors of tall buildings! The Chief of Devas, who had the

avtaar)! Please bless me and show me the means to hold Your lustrous ever
shining
Lotus Feet.
2. Oh SwamI! the One who is at ThiruveLLaRai, which is surrounded by most beautiful gardens, from which fragrance spreads everywhere! tore open the strongest chest of hiraNyan and killed him, who had terrorised
the
whole world, with his ill intentions and powers.. Please have mercy

4. Oh Swami of ThiruveLLaRai, where cuckoos eat the tender leaves of
mango trees and due to which the taste in their mouths is a bit different

fruits..! Oh Lord who had enabled Pandavas get back their kingdom by killing
their enemies in the battle filed! Oh Lord who is at ThiruvEmakatam! Please
grant
me bhakti towards You..

6. Oh Lord of ThiruveLLaRai, where the male bees go as high as the tall huge building looking for honey to give their female counterparts.. ! Oh Greatest Most wonderful Lord who begged for the whole Universe in a yaagham performed by Bhali! ACcharya bhUthA! Please bless me, who is desirous of paying obeisance to you always!
10. This ten is about the Divine, insatiable Nectar, the Jagadh
kaaraNan, (The Cause of the Universe), the Most Beautiful Lord, (Anjana
vaNNan), the One who is always eternally staying at ThiruveLLaRai. The
composer is Kaliyan, who fights with his sharp spear to chase away his
enemies. Those who read them (or these meanings) will be blessed and supported
by Nithya
sooris and be the kings of Devas even. Sure!
AzhwAr in the last ten pleaded to Lord of ThiruveLLaRai “Please
shower Your grace and have mercy on me”. The Lord now replies “Why are
you lamenting? Am I not blessing you? To shower my grace alone, I am here
at Srirangam” and shows Himself to AzhwAr there. AzhwAr gets extremely
thrilled and bursts out with a lovely ten enjoying his anubhavams on Lord
of Thiruvarangam , Sri RanganAtha PerumAL.
(The same Lord now tells us, “Why are you all lamenting? I am here at Pomona, only for you. Come and be blessed… “)
1. Thiruvarangam Divya Desam is so beautiful and is surrounded by the
river Cauvery, which is full of clear waters, running with such heavy currents
due to which it even brings along the sandal tree branches, the gem stones
etc..(They say) the Lord, the Chief of Nithyasooris, the Master of my ancestors
and mine, the one who has swallowed the whole Universe, and all worlds
(during praLayam), the One who created the four faced Brahma in His
Navel, stays here in this sthalam as Sri Ranganathan.
2. The Lord, who had reclined on the little Banyan leaf eating the whole earth during PraLayam and had His Yoga nithrA; who is the Greatest and Sarva shakthan; Sarvagnan; who has Rathna kreetam (crown) on His Beautiful Head; who has ThiruvananthAzhwAn as His Bed, is here at Srirangam Divya Desam, where the river cauvery river waters carry along with it, the mixture of the fragrant flowers (that adorned the beautiful spiritual womenfolk of Srirangam) and .the sandal paste that was applied on them.
3. The most beautiful Thiruvarangam Divya Desam is surrounded by the river that runs to all fertile fields wherein the bees merrily hum, and gardens spreading fragrance everywhere. (They say) the Lord, who that day, stooped Himself so low as a small dwarf, in Vaamana avtaar, and went begging Bhali in his yaagham, (for the sake of Devas) to get back the Universe.. He got the argyam waters form Bhali in His palms; He is the One who has the Divine ChakrAyudham on His resplendent hand; He stays here at this sthalam as Sri Ranganathan.
4. Ramapiraan, who has the divine bow in His large Hand, the bow that was bent to destroy the entire lankA of strong rAvaNan, (who fought vigorously with his sword), stays here in this sthalam of Srirangam, in which the wealthy river Cauvery brings along with it, the elephants’ tusks, the sandal woods, etc..
5. Srirangam Divya Desam, which is surrounded by ramparts that are as bright as reddish gold- is sought even by Brahmaadhi Devas and all seven worlds for paying obeisance to the Lord of this sthalam, who is none other than the Veera Sree, Chakravartthi Thirumagan, the Most Beautiful Sri Raman, the One who aimed ferociously the arrow at the strong rAvaNan (the husband of MaNdOdhari), and made him reach the heaven (Vira Swargam).
6. KaNNan, the One who sucked the life of that cruel devilish rAkshasi, Poothanai, (who had appeared in disgise as the most beautiful YashOdhA like motherly figure to kill the infant KaNNan), is here at Srirangam Divya Desam, where the wavy Cauvery waters enter even the banana gardens, and bring along with it, the whole trees with its swift currents.
7. SarvEshwaran, the One who has the most strongest lustrous ChakrAyudham; the One who effortlessly (as an infant Kutti KaNNan) had kicked the asurA (who had come in as a wheel, sakatAsuran), who killed ChaaNoora mushtikan, who kicked the chest of kamsan, is here at Srirangam, where there is smoke (that emanates from the Yaaghams performed by Brahmins-Vedic scholars) spreading everywhere fragrance and where the buildings appear to even touch the skies.
8. The Lord, who appeared as Varaaham, Masthsyam, the Tortoise (Koormam), Narasingam, Vaamanan and then appeared as a PoorNa avtaar of Lord Raman, as the Chakravartthi Thirumagan, is here at Srirangam, in which the Nithyasooris (of Paramapadham) and the earthly people, jointly come in to pay their obeisance (as a mixture of the honey and milk).
9. SarvEshawran, Sarva vyApakan, Sarva Shakthan, the One who is not
accessible to even Brahmaadhi Devas, the One who enters even the minutest
particles, the One who is the Greatest Primordial Chief, is here (with
such a sowlabhyam) at Srirangam (and now at PomonA), which is surrounded
by gold like ramparts and clear Cauvery waters (that bring along with it,
the pearls
that drop form the bamboo)
10. Alli maadhar amrum Thirumaabhan arangatthai… This ten, written by
the king of Thirumangai, Kaliyan, is on Srirangam where the Lord Ranganthan
(who has in His most beautiful divine Chest, the Periya PiraaTTi, born
of Lotus flower, the most beautiful Sri Ranganayaki), resides permanently.
Those who recite them (or read these meanings) will be blessed with: living
and
enjoying the stay and anubhavam of Srirangam on this earth, and after
leaving this body, ruling the Paramapadhgam (means get the support of those
at Paramapadham)
Bhagawaan Sriya: Pathi Sriman Narayanan stays at Srirangam only
for protecting us. AzhwArs longs to perform kaimkaryam to Him. Nothing
happens and it does not materialise. He gets into the NayikA Bhavam, and
becomes Parakala Nayaki. The mother (of Parakalanayaki)’s bursting out
is this ten.She says : I am not able to her unite with PerumAL; nor am
I able to alleviate her sufferings. What can I do? What is my use of being
a mother?”
1. My darling daugher, who should not be saying this (to me- the mother).
Yet, she has no fear or shyness; She babbles shouting, ” VenkatamE! VenkatamE!”.
Oh no.. she does not even lie down on my lap.. She is suffering so much..
Her darting, spear like beautiful eyes, have lost their sleep. That Lord-
who has the dark beautiful ThirumEni, like that of black bee, the dark
clouds,- that Chief of Nithyars, the Greatest One, the Consort of Periya
PiraaTTi- How can I think of the damage (?) He has done to this girl!
(means: It is much more than what I can even think of)
2. My girl says : My waist is not able to hold my dress; my golden bangles
fall off from my wrists; What shall I do! Will He not like me? Won’t He?”.
The Lord who has Thirumeyyam, as His place. The One who is the Chief of
Nithyasooris, the One who aimed the arrows through seven trees (in
Rama avtaar), The Chakravartthi Thirumagan, - How can I think of the deeds
He has
done to her!
3. My daugher who has the deer like eyes, - Her present state is: all her bangles fall off; Her large bright eyes are welled with tears and the tears are rolling down the soft cheeks ceaselessly. She always talks of the greatness and fragrance of thuLasi maalai that adorns the broad Divine Chest of The Lord and she forgets to sleep. Look at this pitiable condition of hers. The Lord- who stays at the forest (to rear the cattle during KaNNan avtaar), the One who stole the curd, ghee and butter from the cowherd folks’ homes, the darling son of Nandhan, - Oh mothers!, the way He has captured my darling- I simply am not able to comprehend.
4. She is not listening to this poor mother’s advice even. She is not
joining her peers and friends also. She does not apply sandal paste on
her large, tender breasts. “She always keeps asking “Where is my Swami’s
Srirangam?” Oh young girls! The Lord- who sucked the devil woman’s (Poothanai’s)
breasts and finished her off; the One who swallowed the Earth during PraLaya
kaalam, (the large stomach Lord- Peru vayiRRan- because He could have the
big Earth in It..) the One who is Sarva Vyapakan, Sarva
Shakthan, - the damage He has done to her- how am I able to tell all
to you!
5. My darling girl is not applying sandal on her body. She is not applying
“Kaajal” (Collyrium?) (mai) on her large fish like eye lids. She does not
even think of anything else (but Him) as the pastime. (enna adhirshtam..-
How mucky is this girl!) “Where is Srirangam wherein the Lord who is my
Upakaarakan stays?” asks she. The Divine Consort of Periya PiraaTTi (staying
in fresh Lotus flower), the Cowhed Boy, who came to everyone’s delight
(for us to enjoy Him) – The Pari poorNan- the Purushan (He is the Only
Male..) (AaN maganaaay) – I am not able to comprehend the deeds He has
done to my darling; Oh mothers!
6. My girl weeps and exhausts herself crying “Oh … Hmmmm… He is not
giving me the Vanamaalai..” Look at this pitiable state of hers. If I try
to distract her by uttering some other statement, she comes back to Srirangam..
saying “SarvEshwaran stays there at Srirangam”. The Sriya: Pathi,
The dancer (with the pot); the One who killed Madhu kaitapar (two asurAs
as Lord
Hayagrivan..) – The One who went as the messenger for Paandavaas; That
Swami- all that he has done to her- How can I express!
7. She is not thinking of (worried about) the colour changing (getting
pale) of her young breasts. All that she thinks and contemplates is: only

But He does not know my darling’s state of sufferings languishing for Him.
10. The mother of that large fish like eyed girl, tells her daughter’s suffering and languishing for Thiruvarngatthu ammaan , who has His Yoga nithrA there in this ten. This ten is narrated in this manner by Nam Kaliyan. Those who recite this ten (with their meanings), will rule the world as great kings and then reach Paramapadhm blissfully.
After listening to the lamenting cries of Parakala Nayaki (through
her mother), Sri Ranganatha says “AzhwArE! Have I not come to Arangam only
for you? Don’t cry and suffer. And shows His Sowlabhyam. AzhwAr narrtes
all his “laabhams” the benefits he has been blessed with; the enjoyment
he gets by having the darshan of the Lord..
1. Like a young, huge, strong male elephant; like the Dark Blue hued gem (Neela maNi) that has His Yoga nithrA on the ocean; the dense dark, greenish Maragatham; the One who is praised and proclaimed by Vedas; He is My Swami, the One who, by a mere thinking of Him, makes my thoughts so sweet and blissful; the One, who, by effortless lifting of the huge mountain, protected the cattle from torrential rains; Emperumaan – I have seen Him at this most beautiful Divya Desam of Srirangam.

4. (Read this pAsuram! Very sweet!) The One who has His “aRithuyil” (Yoga nithrA) at ThiruppaaRkadal; who, as an infant KaNNan kicked off the wheel asuran; who tore open the strong chest of HiraNyan, ferociously unable to bear him for troubling His Bhaktha; who measured the whole Universe with His feet as a Trivikraman; - I have seen Him at Srirangam.
5. The One who is the waters; the Fire; the Bhoomi; and thus, the antharaathmaa

Him at Srirangam.
6. The One- who removes the obstacles of anger, et al from devotees and increases their desire and love for Him; who killed Kamsan, unable to bear the sufferings of His parents imprisoned by Kamsan; who is like “KaRpaka” tree, as Parama Udhaarakan; who ate the worlds o protect during PraLayam; who conquered and cut the shoulders of bAnAsuran who had come to fight against KaNNan and made Sivan lose heavily (when he came to support the asuran angrily ); who has Garuda as His Vaahanam (vehicle); - I have seen Him at Srirangam.
7. He – the One who is the Vishayam (Object) of my thoughts always;

AzhwAr enjoys in yet another ten on Lord Sri Ranganthan and says
that theLord, in order not to let the present people of the world lose
the greatness of His avtaars, stays permanently at Srirangam, for them
to see Him and His avtaars of His in Him at Srirangam.
1. The beginningless Vedas, the Yaagams that are performed with the
recitation of those Vedic hymns, the VyaakaraNa saasthras, the sabdhams,
the Jeevans, the Fire, the Earth filled with lots of waters, the clouds,
the noisy, airy oceans, the hug seven mountains, the space, the – He has
all of these as a part of His sarIram, - He, SarvEshawaran, is reclining
and having
His Yoga nithrA at Srirangam Divya desam.
2. Indran, four faced BrahmA, Sivan- et al praise Him, with His numerous
countless, various KalyANA guNAs. He stands as the Father, Mother, the

for removals of these bhandhams (relations), He is blemishless natured
and blessed the same to jIvans with Him as the medicine, He is Bliss and

Yoga nithrA.
3. The strong, vast, Earth, the Mountains, the Oceans, the space, the
world where asurAs live, - everything else was engulfed by darkness, and
the beginningless four Vedas were losing their lustre, due to this darkness.
That is when the Lord SavEshawaran appeared as Hamsam, (Swan) and saved
and gave back the Vedas to Sages and Devas. This Lord, which Vedas proclaim
as
Parathvam is here, for our eyes’ enjoyment at Srinagam Divya Desam.
4. The great, huge, tall mountain of Manthara was used as the stick
(matthu) and the long thick snake (Vasuki) was used as the rope for churning
the ThiruppaaRkadal by the Lord.. Like an elephant opening its wide mouth
and shouting, the oceans made the noise of churning, and the waves arising
out of the churning touched the sky, much to delight and wonders of the
Swargam,
the Devalokams, the Sun, the moon, and all other worlds simultaneously.
He churned with his four shoulders (that appeared as thousand shoulders).
Such most wonderful SarvEshawaran is having His Yoga nithrA at Srirangam.
5. How can asurAs live if they even think of that ferocity of Lord Narasimhan?
From the strong chest of HiraNyan, the blood ran out like the stream of
water when it was torn by the Lord. The blood came out like the water falls
from the huge golden mountain. With reddish eyes (due to anger), curved
sharpened teeth, like large wide open, unparalleled mountain of silver
stands on its legs, Lord Narasimhan appeared and He is here at Srirangam
having His Yoga nithrA. (AzhwAr enjoys the Lord as Silver mountain
and hiraNyan as golden mountain).
6. When Kaarthaveeryarjunan went for the battle, it appeared as if thousand
mountains are going together. Lord Parasuraman cut those 1000 strong shoulders
and made them befell on the ground. Kaarthaveeryarjunan reached the heaven.
Devas praised Him with thousand names, and the Lord reclined on the lustrous
1000 mouthed AdhisEshan ThiruvananthAzhwAn, as His bed, on the
wavy Milk Ocean. This Lord who reclined on ThirppaaRkadal, and appeared
later as Parasuraman, is here at Srirangam.
7. SitA Piraatti, who has most beautiful, long curly hair, and has bimbha fruits like mouth, was made to shiver with fear and was separated from Her consort Lord Sri Rama in the Ashramam by that cruel raakshasan, rAvaNan. Rama simply decided to crush the gem bedecked golden Rathna crowns (kireetam)- all ten- and destroy lankA. All that He did was to aim His arrows from the beautiful curved bow to let the ocean leave a way and built the bridge with the service of monkeys. This most greatest Lord is here at Srirangam having His Yoga nithrA.
8. He is Nirvaahakan (Director) for Kaalam (Time) et al; He is the Chief who is worshipped with Homam etc.,; He is the unparalleled anthryaami of the Sun, who spans the whole world on his chariot; He is the One who removed the soorows of GajEndran elephant; He is Raman who destroyed lankA; He is KaNNan who, in order to help Arjunan, hid the Sun with His disc (ChakrA) during battle field; Such greatest and most wonderful Lord is here at Srirangam, reclining and having His Yoga nithrA.
9. He is the little darling infant who sucked the breast of demon Poothanai;
He is the Perumaan, who ate the vast universe and brought back later for
protecting the same during praLayam; He is the Lord who reclined on little
Banyan leaf; He is inaccessible for even Devas; (But) he came into adiyEn’s
heart and helps in removing my sorrows; He is Parama upakaarakan; He is
the
cowherd Boy of KrishNAvataar, who lifted the huge Govardhana mountain
effortlessly to save the cattle from torrential rains; - He is here at
Srirangam reclining and having His Yoga nithrA.
10. Cauvery river, whose noisy waves bring along the golden particles; the pearls; the gems etc., with its swift current, surrounds on all sides of Srirangam Divya Desam, where swans swim gracefully; where (Chandra pushkariNis, Soorya pushkariNis) ponds are beautiful; where SarvEshwaran Lord Sriya: Pathi Sri Ranganathan reclins and has His Yoga NithrA. About Him is this ten which is sung by Kaliyan- Thirumangai’s Chief. Those who read (learn) this ten, will have all their karmaas removed everyday.. (as and when the karmas come in..)
ThirumangaiAzhwAr immerses himself in archaavataar, because only
They can be enjoyed by us on this earth now. The Param, VyUhams are not
accessible here. The anthryaami is invisible. The avtaars (vibhavam) happened
long ago.
AzhwAr performs saranagathy to the archa roopams. In this ten, he says “nin adiyiNai adaindhEn aNipozhil ThiruvarangatthammaanE!”.
1. “yEzhi, yEthalan.. keezhmagan ennaadhu irangi maRRavarkku innaruL

He added that You are my friend; the fifth brother (in our family). (Kamban says “Guganodum ivaranOm”) Such “vaLLal” You are. These words of Yours are rining in my heart always. Hence, Oh merciful Lord! Sri Ranga swAmI! AdiyEn surrenders at Your Feet!
2. Not even a human birth; (like Gugan)- monkey; Vaayu puthran (due
to this birth of being a son of Vaayu, false pride could have come in-
“Vaadham maa magan”). Still, You befriended him; and also said “There is
no paying back for the upakaaram you did” ; “Oh faultless speaker! Let
me enjoy the pleasure of embracing you,” (Vaaymaiyinaayudan udanE uNban

3. GajEndran- the elephant, went into the most beautiful lotus pond, and plucked the flower from there. The strong crocodile pulled its leg. Realising Your anger to the virOdhis of those who surrender to You, adiyEn surrenders at Your Feet, Oh Ranganatha Swami!
4. Sumukan – snake, was chased by Garudan and the snake surrendered to You. When, that poisonous snake, when chased by Garudan, surrendered to You, saying, “You should save me; You alone are my refuge”. You saved him by handing over to Garudan as His protection for Him to provide shelter to the snake. These yamakinkarar are all cruel and can do anything to me. I am scared and surrender to You, realising what You did to that Sumukan, Oh Sri Ranganatha Swami!
5. (Above four pAsurams are on Lord’s mercy on hunter, monkey, elephant and snake). When the Nithras and the earthly people, come together and pay their obeisance to You, PerumAnE! 6. MarkkaNdEyan- the son of Vedic scholar, a sage was sought by Yama for taking his (son’s) life away. MaarkaNdEyan suurnedered to You, and You accepted him and saved him as his rakshakan. To make adiyEn also on the same token at Your Feet, adiyEn surrenders to Your Feet, Oh Swami who has His Yoga nithrA at Sri Rangam!
7. PerumAnE! Saantheebini- a brahmin taught You (when You were KaNNan), the Vedas, the second birth with upanayanam, etc. He asked for a Guru dhankshiNai “My darling son has disappeared and I don’t know where he is. back to him. Oh Sri Ranganatha Swami! Most Powerful Lord! adiyEn surrenderss
to You!
9. The great king- the chief of kings- the strongest emperor- Thondaimaan
Chakravarrtthi- became Your object of mercy. You taught him the most esoteric,
the most powerful, the unparalleled Ashtaaksharam, by staying with him
for seven naazhigai and teaching him seven meanings( of “8”?). Having realised
that adiyEn surrenders You, the One who measured the whole Universe
and ruled the same, Oh Sri Ranganatha Swami!

Brahma kabaalam (the skull of brahma that was removed by Sivan) with the associated flesh was stuck to Sivan’s hand and he went around the worlds to get freed begging for filling that skull (if it gets filled, he will be free). It never got filled. Sivan went to SarvEshawarn Sriya: Pathi Sriman Narayanan and pleaded “The saapam is quite strong and is difficult to get rid off.
