Dear bhagavathas,
Sri.Madhavakannan of Singapore is doing a great kaimkaryam of translating the divya prabandham in a simple English providing the basic meaning of the pasurams. His write ups are concise yet filled with great anubavams. His translations are strictly as per our sampradayam and adiyen has benefitted a lot from his wonderful translations. So far he has completed Thiruvaymozhi and Peria Thirumozhi and few thiruvandhadhis. adiyen is sure that he will continue to enlighten us with the balance prabandhams in the coming days.
Sri.Madhavakannan used to present meanings for every ten pasurams in one posting. Most of you aware that all such postings are being archeived in Sri.Mani's Srivaishnavam page and also in bhakti list egroups site. But since the postings are scattered spanning over a period of two years it may be bit difficult to browse and read them. adiyen is attempting to compile them for the benefit of bhagavathas who can read the entire Peria thirumozhi in say 11 documents.Hope this will be of use to you.
Now over to Sri.Madhavakannan and adiyen won't interfere with him and Thirumangai azhvar, hereafter.
Dasan venkat
Sri:
Dearest Sisters and Brothers, Happy makara sankaranthi! Happy Pongal!
I pray to Divya Damapthis for Their blessings and AchAryAs and ThirumangaiAzhwAr for Their anugraham for my yet another rash, brazen attempt to enter into tranlsation kaimkaryam. Please forgive me for my errors and mistakes. Anything good in it, I am not to be "blamed"; All Emperumaan's grace and AzhwAr's and AchAryan anugraham. All mistakes, blunders are mine; Please pat (slap) my back for that.
ThirumangaiAzhwAr's Periya Thirumozhi is what we are going to enjoy next. All of you know well about this Great AzhwAr, and he needs no introduction. However, for novices like me, just a quick account of his biography:
In his early days, as a king, our Lord Narayana was far from AzhwAr's
thoughts. His spiritual journey started with a commitment he made
to his sweetheart Kumudhavalli in exchange for her hand in marriage.
While most women may have asked for her suitor's everlasting love, or a
diamond ring, or a golden bangle, all our gentle lady Kumudhavalli sought
from AzhwAr was that he must wear the marks of Sri Vaishnava and serve
food (amudhu) for 1,000 Vaishnavaas everyday for a period of one
year. This service, initiated as a price for carnal pleasure,
turned into a labour of divine love towards the devotees of our Lord Narayana.
Years rolled by. AzhwAr spent all his wealth in the service of Vaishnavas.
With his coffers empty, AzhwAr could not continue the service. He
could not bear the thought of having to turn away the Vasihnavas who by
then were accustomed to blessing his abode with their presence.
The feeling of despair turned to anger at the sight of the greedy idle rich strolling around with all their gaudy and ostentatious jewels and showing contempt for the simple and devout Vasihnavas. This was enough to drive our Great AzhwAr to actions. But it was not just fame that was in store for our AzhwAr.
Our Lord Sriya: Pathih Sriman Narayana decided to intervene and turn AzhwAr away from the ways of the sword. He and His consort, our divine mother Sri, appeared before him as a newly wed couple bedecked with priceless ornaments. AzhwAr, who hid himself at ThirumaNankollai, stopped the couple and forcibly relieved them of all the jewellery.
But, there was one piece on our Lord's toe that wouldn't come off however
much AzhwAr tried. In frustration AzhwAr
put his head on the lotus feet of our Lord (!) with the intention of
biting the ring off. He asked the Lord as to what is the magic manthra
for removing? (The Lord must have mis understood that AzhwAr enquires regarding
samsaara bond!) and that sort of SaraNagathy did work! at that moment AzhwAr
was drawn in by the beauty of the lotus feet and realized
the true nature of the couple standing in front of him. The Lord
then instructed the esoteric meaning of the "magic manthra" i.e
"Thirumandhiram" or Ashtaaksharam for the Most Blessed AzhwAr, to get
initiated by the Lord Himself, with Their "thadutthaaTkoLLal".
Thus AzhwAr learnt of the efficacy of the divine name "Narayana" from our Lord Narayana Himself!
He immediately burst out to sing the poem "Periya Thirumozhi" (Great divine poem) consisting of 1,084 verses. The first ten of these verses are dedicated to the name "Narayana." These first 10 emotional verses give aid and comfort to people.
AzhwAr comes down hard on himself with intense self criticism for the
violence he had caused, though for a good cause, for having sought fleeting
worldly pleasures, for having squandered his days on mundane pursuits.
He ends each of
these ten verses with a celebration of the divine name Narayana, for
after finding this sweet name, AzhwAr declares, he was free from all the
sins and assured of the everlasting bliss at the lotus feet of our sweet
Lord Narayana (Biography passage -stole- from Sri Dileepan's
post in Dec 95- in bhakti list - Thanks, Dileepan!)
His compositions were :
1. Periya thirumozhi
2. Periya thirumadal
3. SiRiya thirumadal
4. Thiru nedunthANdakam (TNT)
5. Thiru KurunthANdakam(TKT)
6.Thiru vezhuk kurrirukkai.
His pAsurams are marvellous; excellent and have unsurpassed beauty in them. ParAsara Bhattar made use of his TNT to win over his counter part, an advaitin scholar in his arguments and later the advaitin became his disciple 'nam jeeyar'.
Sri RanganAtha himself heard and was greatly pleased with that argument re-enacted from Bhattar quoting from TNT (Please read excellent posts of Sri V. SadagOpan on TNT and TKT duringFeb 96 from Bhakti Archives - a real feast to each one of you).
Thirumangai AzhwAr (a KING, a person who had all kingly royal comforts) walked all the way and VISITED almost all temples. He is simply GREAT, my dearest brothers and sisters. He is JUST S U P E R B AzhwAr. His wordings are his outpourings straight from his heart.
It is told and declared by Tamil Poets of all kinds that His paasurams contain ezhutthu (writing), sol,(words) poruL, (meanings), yaappu (Grammar), aNi (figure of sppech?) etc.. His songs are so great and so nice to recite! It is simple and quite lucid too for reciters and those who know even little Tamil, can understand the lovely emotional outbursts of AzhwAr and his bhakti.
His paasurams depict mainly the archaavathaarams of Divya dEsams, and when He enjoys Them with the descrition of Divya Desams, they simply immerse us in unbounded limitless bliss and pErAnandham.
Thai AzhwAr, when Kumudavalli had asked him to become a Srivaishnava, got his pancha samskaaram done by ThirunaRaiyoor Nambhi. He got his Thiru ManthrOpadEsam from Sri SowrirAja PerumAL; AzhwAr praises These Lords individually with 100 pAsurams! Nambhi naamam sollil NamO NaaraayaNamE".
This AzhwAr had Great regards for NammAzhwAr. He appealed and requested Sri Ranganathan for lsitening to Thiruvaaymozhi from Kaarthigai sukla Ekadasi and now all Sri vaishnava Divya Desams celebrate this uthasavam of reciting Thiruvaaymozhi.
The essence of Periya Thirumozhi is: The worldly life is sorrowful;
It can be cured only by the grace of Sriman Narayanan; Hence, get saved
by paying obeisance to Him at His Divya Desams (106 Thiruppathis on this
Earth). AzhwAr visited almost about 80 Thiruppathis, all on foot; He sang
1253 passurams, next only to NammAzhwAr; (but NammAzhwAr never went
to any Divya Desams; The Lords came to Him!)… Thirumangai AzhwAr padi
padi paraparappaay Thirndhaar…He declares: If one surrenders to Sriman
Narayanan, "enRum vinaiyaagina saaragilaavE"… (Never will sins accrue to
your account!)..
This prabhandham should be read, re-read, re-re read and enjoyed! So
nice are they… Last Kaarthigai Kritthigai nakshathram (during AzhwAr Thirunakshathram)
as instructed by our KaNNan Swami, I could recite Periya Thirumozhi for
ten days preceding his Thirunakshathram and completed on his birthday.
It was a great feeling of having read his lovely Periya Thirumozhi. Dearest
Sisters and Brothers, my attempting to write these translation is: 1. Those
who do not know Tamil, can get to know the meanings, and enjoy. 2. Those
who wish to know the meanings (though we all know Tamil, it is still difficult
to understand the
meanings) and 3. Being a self-centred person, I myself would like to
enjoy them, by reading the pAsurams and writing these translations.
May I request for all your aseervaathams and wishes for such a rash attempt? (Fools rush in where angels fear to tread).
Thirumangai AzhwAr ThiruvadigaLE SaraNam

5. This Lord, who had cut the thousand shoulders of VaaNaasuran and chased away Sivan et al who had come to support VaaNan; who had kicked the asurA who appeared as a wheel (sakatAsuran); resides at this sthalam of Thirunaangoor ThiruvaNpurudOtthamam, which is surrouded by tall buidlings that even hide the rays of Sun and the flags that are tied at the top of these buildings touch even the sky.
6. The Lord, who had grown H….U….G…E to measure the whole Universe with His Lotus Feet (when He begged for three measures of earth from bhali), and when He took Trivikrama avathaar, Brahma praised Him and offered his obeisance, washed His Lotus Feet with waters that became Ganges waters; Such Greatest Lord, KaNNan has come for the sake of His Bhakthas (us), the Lord of Great Sowlabhyam, to this sthalam of Thiru Naangoor ThiruvaNpurudOtthamam, where the buds of kO~nghu tree flowers are like the tender breasts of the beautiful women folks of this sthalam; the red Ambhal flowers are like the coral red lips and the red lotuses, like the beautiful faces of theirs. as per his advcie, offered a cow (made of Gold) to a brahmin (for crossing
the ocean? Or for killing rAvaNan?) and that Brahmin built this temple
using the cow (made of Gold); hence it is called Sem pon sey kOil, (the
temple made of reddish Gold). Sivan, for his Brahmahartthi dhOsham, performed
asvamEdha yaagham and during PoorNaahudhi, SarvEsharan, along with His
PiraaTTis, showed Himself to Sivan and as per his prayers, the Lord
stays in eleven forms permanently for the sake of us.. Due to this, on
the next night after Amavasya (New
moon) in Thai maasam, all eleven Divya Desam PerumALs (on 11
Garudas), show Themselves together. IT IS DIVINE FEAST TO THE EYES.. All
11 Divya Desams of Thirunaangoor, were (it appears) made for Rudhran’s
prayers. Once, a brahmin
boy by name Mukundan, son of Kaashyapan, came here due to his father’s
(and his family’s) tremendous poverty , and did Ashtaakshara japam for
32,000 times to be blessed by PerumAL with lots of wealth..)

3. (He exists everywhere; antharbahithschathassarvam vyaapya naaraayaNasthithah:)
kadal niRa vaNNanRannai naan adiyEn kaNdukoNdu uyndhozhindhEnE”
The solid space, the fire, water, the moon, the sun, the beings on this earth, the non beings that spread everywhere, - in all of these, He exists as the antharyaami (the indweller); the blue ocean coloured Lord; - Sarva swamin; my Swami; (akila jagadh Swamin; asmin Swamin) – I am blessed to have seen such Greatest SarvEshwaran at this sthalam of SemponseykOil, where Brahmins, in the likes of Brahma live.

like boy, Vaamanan and measured the universe during the yaagham of Bhali’s;
the Lord, who reclines on ThiruppaRkadal, and is praised and prostrated
at His Lotus feet by the unwavering
and unflickering minded Nithyasooris; the Lord, who has the most lustrous
shining Crown (full of emerald);- I am blessed to have
seen Him and been saved at this sthalam of SemponseykOil, where people
like Brahma live.
5. “kaamanai payanRaanthannai naan adiyEn kaNdu koNdu
uyndhozhindhEnE..”

I am blessed to have seen Him and been saved at this sthalam of SemponseykOil.
6. (AzhwAr continues to enjoy Sri Rama..) “alli malaraaL thannodu
adiyEn kaNdu koNdu allal theerndhEnE..”
Sri Raman built the bridge across the vast deep ocean, using huge mountain
rocks.. ; Then He aimed the unparalleled, unmatched arrows at lankA, that
is surrounded by tall ramparts on top of the huge mountains, sending shivers
and chills through the spines of
rAkshasaas there. – I am blessed to have seen such Greatest Emperumaan
along with His Divine Consort Periya PiraaTTi,
seated on Lotus flower and been saved of my grievances and sins/sorrows
at this sthalam of SemponseykOil, where Brahmins who know all four Vedas,
and are of great(spiritual) wealth reside.
7. “anjank kuNram ninRadhu oppaanaik kaNdu koNdu
allal theernahdEnE..”
The angry Kuvalayaapeetam elephant, the bow (that was aimed to kill
Him) and the wrestlers (ChaNooran, Mushtikan), were all simply destroyed
by Emperumaan KaNNan; the Lord, who angered on Kamsan and finished him
off, the Most Youthful Lord, the blue cloud coloured Lord, the One who
stands firm and solid like the anjana mountain, - I am blessed to have
seen Him and been
saved at this sthalam of SemponseykOil, where sweet (hitha bhaashis)
soft spoken people reside.
8. Emperumaan, who had cut the 1000 shoulders of VaaNan, with His ChakrAyudham,
who stands on the mountain of Thirumala,
who is praised and is the essence of all Vedas, like the lamp shedding
light everywhere, who stands firm and solid, where His
devotees enjoy seeing His Divine Beauty and where He continues to stay
at all times for them; - Such most glorious SarvEshwaran, I am blessed
to have seen Him at this sthlam of SemponseykOil and been saved..
9. “kaLankanivaNNA! KaNNanE! enRan kaarmugilE! yena
ninaindhittu/ uLankanindhirukkum adiyavar thangaL
uLLatthu ooRiya thEnai/ ..vaLankoL pErinbham manni
ninRaanai vaNaghi naan vaazhtthozhindhEnE..”
“Oh Lord! The One who looks like the “KaLaappazham”.! KaNNaa! To my
eyes’ greatest satisfaction, You show Yourself
in dark cloud hued colour!”- like that, devotees enjoy addressing Him
to their hearts’ content- He stays in the hearts of such great
Bhagawathas and also stays at this sthalam of SemponseykOil in the
same manner (for their satisfaction), where Vedic scholars
and learned ones stay.. I am blessed to have seen Him at this sthalam
and paid my obeisance to Him.
10. This ten is about the Lord of SemponseykOil, lying in the midst
of Thirunaangoor and is sung by Thirumangaimannan, about his
having seen Him and been saved. Those who read these ten, will become
great kings and bring the whole earth under one umbrella (Srivaishnava
umbrella?) and then become like Nithyasooris.
1. The Lord who took His avtaar so as to let the crowns of DuryOdhanaadhis, their valour, their self respect, their wives’ mangaLa soothram (Thirumaangalyam), Vasudevar’s (His father) hand clasps, etc.. drop on the ground; - who saved the elephant GajEndran, KaNNan, is the Red Lotus eyed Lord of ThirutheRRoyambalam Divya Desam, where The betel nut trees rain white pearls from them on the fertile fields underneath, and where large lotus flowers with number of petals, grow to enter into the holes of crabs.
2. The cruel, cunning, demon Poothanai, took a beautiful form like YashOdhA, (who is feminine and wears golden bangles in her long hands), and when this raakshasi took her breast out of her “kacchu” (blouse?), and fed the infant Kutti KaNNan with a false pretension of affection and kindness. The Greatest Lord KaNNan, as an infant, joyously sucked the poisonous breast milk of Poothanai along with her life itself. This little KaNNan, is the Red Lotus eyed Lord of ThiruttheRRiyambalam, where the anklets worn at the small tender feet of large eyed girls, make musical sounds and where the beautiful feathered bees hum with charming music roam on the flowers, and these sounds are like that of small infant’s babbling.
3. The Kutti KaNNan, as young Boy of Aayar kulam, entered through little holes for eating the just churned butter (which is so fresh and warm), and pulled the sari end of those long eyed cowherd women, which made them giggle and happy. Such Greatest Parama Sowlabhyan, SarvEshwaran who roamed in the streets of the entire idaicchEri, Is the Red Lotus eyed Lord of ThiruttheRRiyambalam, where the tall coconut trees drop their fruits that erode the banks of the river whose waters bring along the mango fruits gathered on the way.
4. For getting the most beautiful feminine Nappinnai PiraaTTi, KaNNan,
fought against the most strong legged, angry, bulls with curved horns,
and killed them effortlessly and married Nappinnai. Such dark hued, Lord
of cloud colour, is the Red Lotus
eyed Lord of ThiruttheRRiyambalam, which is full of large buildings
impregnated with gems, and emerald stones, and where the most fragrant
filled breeze makes the moon not willing to cross and go away from this
place.
5. The Most Beautiful, most compassionate, Periya PiraaTTi, (who has
lustrous white pearl like white teeth)’s bright pearl necklace and
jewel bedecked KaNdigai, that are worn on Her breasts, and similarly the
ornaments of Nappinaai PiraTTi’s – they all gently rub the most strongest
broad Divine Chest of Emperumaan, and due to which His beauty does not
change and gets
further glorified, - Such Emperumaan has mountain like huge shoulders.
This Lord is the Red Lotus Eyed Lord of ThiruttheRRiyambalam, where the
young, sweet, soft spoken women, with their bow like large beautiful eyes,
arrest their men’s hearts and where the streets are full of tall, dense
buildings are seen.
6. About Chakravarthi Thirumagan, Sri Raman, “Thinking He is like me, being a king, (like yet another king (Kshathriyan)), he has come to fight against me” roared rAvaNan. Like that the egoistic rAkshasa king of demons, had no fear. His ten heads and twenty hands were simply cut off simultaneously by Lord Ramam. paLLi, of Thirunaangoor
where tall buildings are there obstructing the moon’s path.. He is
the One whose duty is to save others at all times” (One shall read Swami

destroyed her femininity and is being talked about by all.

Sriman Narayanan out of His own mercy on His devotees, appears in
Thiru indhaLoor Divya Desam in ArchAvataar. ThirumangaiAzhwAr went to see
His Divine Beauty there and enjoy. BUT….When he went there, He did not
see AzhwAr; didn’t hug him and welcome him. Didn’t let him explain the
purpose of his coming there. Here is AzhwAr’s LOVELY TEN… (I was told by
my father that when AzhwAr went here at this sthalam, it was already closed.
AzhwAr could not bear the closure of gate due to his love and bhakti for
the Lord. He gets angry and he bursts out with this excellent ten.. )

What a lovely pAsuram! Oh my mother like Lord, the One who is at Thiru

Now, adiyEn has become Your dAsan. At least once, if You take pity
on me “aiyO!” this guy is my dAsan” and grants me
to perform kaimkaryam to You, quickly, will we (who do not aspire for
any others) not be saved? (we will of course be saved.)
2. “enthaay! IndhaLoorirE! AdiyERkku Iraiyum iRangaayE!”

Oh IndhaLoor SwamI! I have the desire to davrIr,(the One who has measured the Universe in just two steps and the One who has bee humming (flower bedecked) Crown) on this earth (here at this sthalam). We have lost ourselves and are mad with that intense deep ocean of great desire only. Others (neighbours) talk about us too for this madness. We also now talk about our desire. Be aware!
4. (A GREAT PAASURAM! Angry AzhwAr blasts PerumAL!)
“Vaasivalleer! IndhaLoorirE! VaazhndhE pOm neerE!”
adiyEn has been blessed to keep praising You, with intense love and
desire for You. And this praise of mine has beocme (I think) has become
my disqualification. Because, You, the One whose lustre and jyOthi is even
brighter than the molten gold, are NOT showing Your Divine Most Beautiful
brightest Form, to us, who, are wandering as Your dAsars (the whole world
is aware of that)
Oh Lord who stays permanently at IndhaLoor Divya Desam! The One who
knows everything! VaazhdhE pOm neerE! Live here happily (and alone!- as
You don’t want us; You are not showing Yourselves to us)

brings tears in our eyes) Oh SwamI! The One who is at Thiru indhaLoor!
I can not any more resist my telling this to You. If I need to tell (all
that I know of), (it appears) You think I am just like everyone else. (illai
SwamI; I am here Crying and weeping heavily for want of seeing You, while
everyone Else is busy with their running amuck after material pursuits..)
You, very well know who are all Your dAsras, and who can not live even
Feel the separation from You; You know those who also CAN LIVE BEING SEPARATED
from You as well (and live happily too Seeing TV and CDs); Knowing all
this, still,, You (the Sarvagnan), DO NOT KNOW THIS TENDER HEART OF MINE
THAT
MELTS suffering from this separation from You.
7. Oh IndhaLoor Swami! You do not desire for our kaimkrayams! You have
made us realise and enjoy the kaimkarya rasam and
stopped with that. (You dropped us) That’s why, out of suffering
from that separation from You, we talked a bot different.. (like VaazhndhE
pOm neerE!) You are not showing Your Lotus Feet to us; If You show Your
Feet, will we not, right away, here itself (who are Your eternal servants)
be blessed to be saved?

At all time is Your dark cloud like colour (most merciful form and colour)
Please show us Your colour
and form, Lord of IndhaLoor!
9. Oh IndhaLoor Swami! Our Kulam (ancestors) right from the past Seven generations (or even more) have been praising You saying, You alone are Our Swami! And have been living with the desire of performing Kaimkaryams to You. You are still indifferent. You are standing in my heart for ages.. BUT still, You have not yet shown Your Form and colour to us.

crawled in between the two marudha trees; the one who measured the Universe,
in two steps, as Vaamanan begging from Bhali; Such Greatest Lord stays

HiraNyan on His lap and tore open the strong chest of his, and killed him;
