Dear bhagavathas,
Sri.Madhavakannan of Singapore is doing a great kaimkaryam of translating the divya prabandham in a simple English providing the basic meaning of the pasurams. His write ups are concise yet filled with great anubavams. His translations are strictly as per our sampradayam and adiyen has benefitted a lot from his wonderful translations. So far he has completed Thiruvaymozhi and Peria Thirumozhi and few thiruvandhadhis. adiyen is sure that he will continue to enlighten us with the balance prabandhams in the coming days.
Sri.Madhavakannan used to present meanings for every ten pasurams in one posting. Most of you aware that all such postings are being archeived in Sri.Mani's Srivaishnavam page and also in bhakti list egroups site. But since the postings are scattered spanning over a period of two years it may be bit difficult to browse and read them. adiyen is attempting to compile them for the benefit of bhagavathas who can read the entire Peria thirumozhi in say 11 documents.Hope this will be of use to you.
Now over to Sri.Madhavakannan and adiyen won't interfere with him and Thirumangai azhvar, hereafter.
Dasan venkat
Sri:
Dearest Sisters and Brothers, Happy makara sankaranthi! Happy Pongal!
I pray to Divya Damapthis for Their blessings and AchAryAs and ThirumangaiAzhwAr for Their anugraham for my yet another rash, brazen attempt to enter into tranlsation kaimkaryam. Please forgive me for my errors and mistakes. Anything good in it, I am not to be "blamed"; All Emperumaan's grace and AzhwAr's and AchAryan anugraham. All mistakes, blunders are mine; Please pat (slap) my back for that.
ThirumangaiAzhwAr's Periya Thirumozhi is what we are going to enjoy next. All of you know well about this Great AzhwAr, and he needs no introduction. However, for novices like me, just a quick account of his biography:
In his early days, as a king, our Lord Narayana was far from AzhwAr's
thoughts. His spiritual journey started with a commitment he made
to his sweetheart Kumudhavalli in exchange for her hand in marriage.
While most women may have asked for her suitor's everlasting love, or a
diamond ring, or a golden bangle, all our gentle lady Kumudhavalli sought
from AzhwAr was that he must wear the marks of Sri Vaishnava and serve
food (amudhu) for 1,000 Vaishnavaas everyday for a period of one
year. This service, initiated as a price for carnal pleasure,
turned into a labour of divine love towards the devotees of our Lord Narayana.
Years rolled by. AzhwAr spent all his wealth in the service of Vaishnavas.
With his coffers empty, AzhwAr could not continue the service. He
could not bear the thought of having to turn away the Vasihnavas who by
then were accustomed to blessing his abode with their presence.
The feeling of despair turned to anger at the sight of the greedy idle rich strolling around with all their gaudy and ostentatious jewels and showing contempt for the simple and devout Vasihnavas. This was enough to drive our Great AzhwAr to actions. But it was not just fame that was in store for our AzhwAr.
Our Lord Sriya: Pathih Sriman Narayana decided to intervene and turn AzhwAr away from the ways of the sword. He and His consort, our divine mother Sri, appeared before him as a newly wed couple bedecked with priceless ornaments. AzhwAr, who hid himself at ThirumaNankollai, stopped the couple and forcibly relieved them of all the jewellery.
But, there was one piece on our Lord's toe that wouldn't come off however
much AzhwAr tried. In frustration AzhwAr
put his head on the lotus feet of our Lord (!) with the intention of
biting the ring off. He asked the Lord as to what is the magic manthra
for removing? (The Lord must have mis understood that AzhwAr enquires regarding
samsaara bond!) and that sort of SaraNagathy did work! at that moment AzhwAr
was drawn in by the beauty of the lotus feet and realized
the true nature of the couple standing in front of him. The Lord
then instructed the esoteric meaning of the "magic manthra" i.e
"Thirumandhiram" or Ashtaaksharam for the Most Blessed AzhwAr, to get
initiated by the Lord Himself, with Their "thadutthaaTkoLLal".
Thus AzhwAr learnt of the efficacy of the divine name "Narayana" from our Lord Narayana Himself!
He immediately burst out to sing the poem "Periya Thirumozhi" (Great divine poem) consisting of 1,084 verses. The first ten of these verses are dedicated to the name "Narayana." These first 10 emotional verses give aid and comfort to people.
AzhwAr comes down hard on himself with intense self criticism for the
violence he had caused, though for a good cause, for having sought fleeting
worldly pleasures, for having squandered his days on mundane pursuits.
He ends each of
these ten verses with a celebration of the divine name Narayana, for
after finding this sweet name, AzhwAr declares, he was free from all the
sins and assured of the everlasting bliss at the lotus feet of our sweet
Lord Narayana (Biography passage -stole- from Sri Dileepan's
post in Dec 95- in bhakti list - Thanks, Dileepan!)
His compositions were :
1. Periya thirumozhi
2. Periya thirumadal
3. SiRiya thirumadal
4. Thiru nedunthANdakam (TNT)
5. Thiru KurunthANdakam(TKT)
6.Thiru vezhuk kurrirukkai.
His pAsurams are marvellous; excellent and have unsurpassed beauty in them. ParAsara Bhattar made use of his TNT to win over his counter part, an advaitin scholar in his arguments and later the advaitin became his disciple 'nam jeeyar'.
Sri RanganAtha himself heard and was greatly pleased with that argument re-enacted from Bhattar quoting from TNT (Please read excellent posts of Sri V. SadagOpan on TNT and TKT duringFeb 96 from Bhakti Archives - a real feast to each one of you).
Thirumangai AzhwAr (a KING, a person who had all kingly royal comforts) walked all the way and VISITED almost all temples. He is simply GREAT, my dearest brothers and sisters. He is JUST S U P E R B AzhwAr. His wordings are his outpourings straight from his heart.
It is told and declared by Tamil Poets of all kinds that His paasurams contain ezhutthu (writing), sol,(words) poruL, (meanings), yaappu (Grammar), aNi (figure of sppech?) etc.. His songs are so great and so nice to recite! It is simple and quite lucid too for reciters and those who know even little Tamil, can understand the lovely emotional outbursts of AzhwAr and his bhakti.
His paasurams depict mainly the archaavathaarams of Divya dEsams, and when He enjoys Them with the descrition of Divya Desams, they simply immerse us in unbounded limitless bliss and pErAnandham.
Thai AzhwAr, when Kumudavalli had asked him to become a Srivaishnava, got his pancha samskaaram done by ThirunaRaiyoor Nambhi. He got his Thiru ManthrOpadEsam from Sri SowrirAja PerumAL; AzhwAr praises These Lords individually with 100 pAsurams! Nambhi naamam sollil NamO NaaraayaNamE".
This AzhwAr had Great regards for NammAzhwAr. He appealed and requested Sri Ranganathan for lsitening to Thiruvaaymozhi from Kaarthigai sukla Ekadasi and now all Sri vaishnava Divya Desams celebrate this uthasavam of reciting Thiruvaaymozhi.
The essence of Periya Thirumozhi is: The worldly life is sorrowful;
It can be cured only by the grace of Sriman Narayanan; Hence, get saved
by paying obeisance to Him at His Divya Desams (106 Thiruppathis on this
Earth). AzhwAr visited almost about 80 Thiruppathis, all on foot; He sang
1253 passurams, next only to NammAzhwAr; (but NammAzhwAr never went
to any Divya Desams; The Lords came to Him!)… Thirumangai AzhwAr padi
padi paraparappaay Thirndhaar…He declares: If one surrenders to Sriman
Narayanan, "enRum vinaiyaagina saaragilaavE"… (Never will sins accrue to
your account!)..
This prabhandham should be read, re-read, re-re read and enjoyed! So
nice are they… Last Kaarthigai Kritthigai nakshathram (during AzhwAr Thirunakshathram)
as instructed by our KaNNan Swami, I could recite Periya Thirumozhi for
ten days preceding his Thirunakshathram and completed on his birthday.
It was a great feeling of having read his lovely Periya Thirumozhi. Dearest
Sisters and Brothers, my attempting to write these translation is: 1. Those
who do not know Tamil, can get to know the meanings, and enjoy. 2. Those
who wish to know the meanings (though we all know Tamil, it is still difficult
to understand the
meanings) and 3. Being a self-centred person, I myself would like to
enjoy them, by reading the pAsurams and writing these translations.
May I request for all your aseervaathams and wishes for such a rash attempt? (Fools rush in where angels fear to tread).
Thirumangai AzhwAr ThiruvadigaLE SaraNam
"thunjum bOdhu azhaimin.. thuyar varil ninaimin… thuyarileer sollinum nanRaam… (While you sleep, call… or when you feel depressed and sorrowful… call… or no worries.. no problems.. stilll it is so sweet to utter…. Call "Narayana Narayana" says "Thirumangai AzhwAr)

His strong Bow which aimed string of arrows that made the strong heads
of
rAvanan (the chief of lankA, suurounded by dense huge ocean) falling
like
fruits from the tree. This Greaest Emperumaan is here at ThirukkaNNangudi,
where peacocks dance, clouds roar with their thunders; and bees hum
drinking
honey from the flowers.
8. KaNNapiraan, when H found the false chair placed by DhuryOdhanan
in his
court for KaNNan to sit when He came in- grew so huge and tall touching

9. When Bhmi PiraaTTi could not tolerate any more by the ‘adharmic’
rules of

10. Emperumaan who destroyed the ocean-surrounded lankA city like huge
fire
engulfing the whole place, for the sake of His Divine Consort Janaki

Kaliyan the king of Thirumangai. Those who read this ten in Chaste
Tamil,
will never be poor in being blessed with the Lord’s Lotus Feet.
1. Oh my dear friend! This Emperumaan's most beautiful Divine ThirumEni
shines like the Gold. This Strong chest is like luster of Maragatha
stone.
On that broad chest, the necklace glitters. Is He a Brahmin reciting
the
Vedas? Or Is he a Deva? He looks at me, by bending Himself, and looks
at my
tender breasts too. I wonder what my mother thinks of this! I am scared.
What an unparalleled beauty of His! aaccharyam!
2. One is not able to realize that this Piraan is none other than the
most
youthful Lord of Thirukkudanthai. He has the red lustrous ChakrA and
Conch
shell (sanghu). This most Beautiful Emperumaan, gorgeous Lord shining
with
His resplendent four hands, standing on His feet with the divine jewellery
and pearl necklaces, with all young women paying their obeisance at
His
Lotus Feet. What an unparalleled beauty of His! aaccharyam!

4. He wears most fragrant Thirutthuzhaay garland around His neck; He
also
has the strong ChakrA and the Divine Sanghu (Conch) in His hands; He
has
great love and care for us. He, out of His own free will, has come
to our
place and stands. He is the most youthful Emperumaan. His mouth is
like the
reddish coral. He is the Lord of everyone. One compares His most beautiful
ThirumEni to the red coral (sem pavazham). What an unparalleled beauty
of
His! aaccharyam!
5. He has ThiruvuRaiyoor and Thirukkoodal as His place of residence.
He is
the Lord and the king. He stands like the Chakravartthi. He has four
strong
shoulders like huge mountains. We have never seen Him before. Let Him
live
long for hundreds of years. Speaking of His gorgeous beauty, He stands
like
the huge, vast, deep blue ocean. He stands with the chakra on one hand
and
sanghu on the other. What an unparalleled beauty of His! aaccharyam!
6. Is He the strong king. who broke the tusk of that angry Kuvalayaapeetam?
I am afraid His place of stay is the minds of women (devotees). It
appears
He has given himself to them. I do not know that. But I know one thing.
Look
at those lovely graceful lotus flower like eyes. He stands like that
most
Youthful Lord who kicked Kamsan. He stands like the anjana mountain,
so
beautiful. What an unparalleled beauty of His! aaccharyam.
7. Is He parama krupaakaran (Most merciful Lord) like the Sun that makes
the lotus bud bloom? I don't know. My heart automatically pays obeisance
to
Him. His eyes are like the lustrous red lotus flowers. Those Hands-
look at
them. They are also like a pair of red lotus flowers. That broad chested
ThirumEni is like the blue hued cloud in the sky. What an unparalleled
beauty of His! aaccharyam.
8. This Lord, who lives on his own, happily at ThirulalirunchOlai, and
now
he has come on His own into my eyes and my mind and will never ever
leave
me. He lives here as if he is there at Thiruneermalai. I am not able
to tell
as to who He is. He shines like huge dark clouds on the golden hued
mountain. Look at Him by yourself. What an unparalleled beauty of His!
aaccharyam
9. He stands as the most wonderful Lord, as the One who reclined on
a Banyan
leaf, having all the worlds in his stomach. I am not able to comprehend
His
"maayai". He stands like huge mountain and dark clouds. His divine
eyes and
mouth are like the most fragrant red lotus flowers. He is worshipped
by
Nithya sooris. What an unparalleled beauty of His! aaccharyam
10. This ten is about the Lord of ThirunAgai - Sundhara vadivudaiyaan,
who
appeared once as Hamsam, Varaaham, Mathsyam and other avtaars. This
is sung
by the king of Thirumangai. This ten is chaste Tamil and those who
read them
will first rule this words as great kings and then enter into SrivaikunTam,
living with Nithya sooris, enjoying every moment.
1. I, the sinner, who is suffering from the separation from Him, will
never
ever let Him go. The Emperumaan, who united with me completely, and
has gone
away capturing my feminine, golden colour beauty with Him, resides
here at
ThiruppullaaNi. Oh my dear mind! Go, pay obeisance and get saved.
2. Oh my dear mind! what is the big deal of being here thinking of Him?
Emperumaan, who had united with me, to my fullest heart's content,
stays at
this sthalam of ThiruppullaaNi, where the ocean sweeps the gem stones
to the
shore. Go, pay obeisance and get saved.
3. Oh my dear mind! How can I ever forget Him? I am not able to. Let
us see
if we can forget Him, after He comes to us permanently. Near that charming,
beautiful gardens, full of ponds with lot of fragrant flowers, He followed
me and said to me, "I will never ever leave the impish charming, foolish
(pEdhai) You. Then he left me. That Emperumaan resides in ThiruppullaaNi.
Go, pay obeisance and get saved.
4. When he united with me, the honey bee was the witness. He has not
bestowed His grace on this paavi. He has left me. He did not follow
what He
had said that day. (nangaL eesan namakkE paNittha mozhi seydhilan).
Oh
friend! Come let us go to ThiruppullaaNi, where the ocean pushes the
pearls
to its shores. Don't stop me. Let us get saved by paying obeisance
to Him
and get saved.
5. Thinking of it, my heart languishes; That day, he had plucked some
flowers from "kongu" tree and adorned my hair. Then he showered His
love on
me. His place of residence is ThiruppullaaNi. my dear mind! Go, pay
obeisance and get saved.
6. Oh my dear mind! What is the use of thinking of Emperumaan here?
We need
to go. Udhaaran (Most merciful Lord), the most wonderful Lord, Blue
hued
Most beautiful Perumaan is he who resides at ThiruppullaaNi. he is
my Swami.
Go, pay obeisance and get saved.
7. Oh sinful mind! What is the use of not sleeping, always thinking
of Him,
who had deserted us, day and night? Let us go to ThiruppullaaNi, where
the
white waves gallop like horses and sweep the pearls to the sand banks
and
get saved.
8. Emperumaan, who has Chakra and the plough, had deceited me as if
He loved
us. Nor did He have any mercy on us. Come, my dear mind! Let us go
to
ThiruppullaaNi and pay obeisance to Him to get saved.
9. Oh my girl! He is the only Purushaartham for us and hence, let us
perform
our snAnam, and utter his Divine name. Let us pay our obeisance to
Him,
offering our dhaNdavath praNAmams at His Lotus Feet every day. Even
if He
does not grant anything good on His own, at least this effort of ours
should
be able to get Him. If we do not have even this, we will never be able
to
get Him. Come. Let us pay obeisance to Him at ThiruppullaaNi.
10. This ten is on the most beautiful ThiruppullaaNi Divya Desam, which
is
surrounded all over by the lovely gardens full of lotus ponds, tender
leaves. This is composed by the Kaliyan, who never wavers in his mind.
Thos
who read this ten (sung in chaste Tamil) will be blessed to live in
Vaikuntam
1. "paavaay! idhu namakkOr paanmaiyE agaadhE!"- Oh my dear friend! This
husky voice of these cute birds (anRil) residing in this dense garden,
torments me more than that of the sharp spear on the wounds, that has
already been caused by manmathan's arrow. Alas! I longed and desired
to pay
my obeisance to ThiruppullaaNi by reaching there. It has almost become
my
nature to long like this, without being able to reach! Also not being
able
to even wait and endure until He comes to save us..
2. Oh "ponna~nkazhi" (cranes?) birds, the ones who loiter with your
long
legs in the shores of the ocean! That day, he appeared as short Vaamanan
and
begged for three measures of His Feet, measured the whole Universe.
I have
been simply flabbergasted and haunted by His such wonderful acts. He
has
driven me completely crazee. I am suffering from "pasalai" disease
(the
pangs of separation). Please go and tell this to Emperumaan of
ThiruppullaaNi, who appeared as Swan (Hamsam) to save Vedas. (He appeared
to
save Vedas and now He does not appear to save me.)
3. My heart, that caught hold of the corner of that fragrant garden
on his
Chest, has left me and gone with Him. Does it not know that I can not
live
without the heart? I paid my obeisance to ThirupullaaNi (towards that
direction). Please go and inform my mind to that MOST CHARMING Emperumaan
who has the Divine Bow in his resplendent Hand.
4. Swami- the One effortlessly tore ths strong Chest of HiraNyan, (who
had
ammased his strength and pride with the boon that he had obtained)
with his
sharp nails, appearing as Lord Narasingan. why does He not bless me
with his
krupA? I folded my hands and paid obeisance to Emperumaan of ThiruppullaaNi.
In those flower like eyes of mine, the tears well; around that slender
waist, the beautiful dress does not stay.
5. "PullaaNi Emperumaan poi kEttirundhEnE.. " (I have only heard now
of His
lies..!) All my relatives come and tell me.."You should have listened
to us.
You listened to Him. We spoke truth; He has become a liar. ". "Okay.
I will
now listen to you all. But, only after getting my heart back that had
gone
behind Him." says Parakala Nayaki. (vallaaLan pin pOna nenjam varumaLavum..)
Though all of them talk about me, I am still trusting that "Great liar
(of
ThirupullaaNi Emperumaan's)'s words and am living with a (faint?) hope.
6. The Sun, who revolves around that mEru mountain with those hot, bright
rays, has also gone down and disappeared into the horizon. That cool
moon
also tortures me with her rays, scorching my body. alas! I paid my
obeisance
to Empeumaan. But, I lost my fair wheatish complexion of my body, which
has
become pale; I have lost my bangles.
7. "kanaiyaar idikuralin kaarmaNiyin naa aadal.. The never ceasing continual
twang and movement of the dark bell's tongue, tied to the neck of that
bull,
which shouts like thunder, tortures me at all times, like the scorching
flames of fire. I paid my obeisance to ThiruppullaaNi Divya Desam,
which is
full of tall beautiful buildings. On me, even the waves from the ocean,
throw the fiery sparks. (due to the pangs of separation from the Lord..)
8. SarvEshwaran- The One who reclines and has His Yoga nithrA on
ThiruvananthAzhwAn- the One who is strong and who broke the strong
ivory
tusk of Kuvalayaapetam elephant; the One who blessed me with his grace
for
enabling me to pay obeisance to ThiruppullaaNi. Now, even this cool,
crescent moon also torments me with its rays, that are like fire to
me (in
this viraha thaapam)
9. Vedas- the yaagams that are stipulated in Vedas- the swargam (heaven)
that is attainable by the performance of such yaagams- The Sun and
the Moon
that shower their rays and light the worlds to dispel the darkness-
- The
Cause and Nirvaahakan of all of them- Emperumaan Sriya: Pathih Sriman
Narayanan- what did He do to me? Nothing. I paid my obeisance to
ThiruppullaaNi, surrounded by "Punnai" trees and what is the use?-
I have
not been able to sleep along with these oceanic waves. (Odhamum naanum
uRangaadhu irundhEnE)
10. This ten is on the Emperumaan of ThiruppullaaNi. Its meaning: The
women,
who suffered from languishing for this Emperumaan due to their intense
desire on Him.- the composer: AzhwAr whose shoulders are like stone,
so
strong. The readers of this ten: They will be the kings on this world
and
rule them, before being blessed to rule the Paramapadham too.
Last ten on Periya Thirumozhi (9.4), Alwar (ParakalanAyaki) had
sent the
messengers to the Lord.. Even before their coming, she feels
exhausted,
longing for the Lord; and she is not able to listen to the words of
her
mother and friends. He has not come. Hence, she pleads them for taking
her
to ThirukkuRunkudi.
1. The cool bright, blemishless crescent moon; the ocean with its hopping
waves; the cool gentle breeze that caresses the flowers; the bird (its
musical tone)- are all troubling my mind jointly. Everywhere the thick
fog
has engulfed; I am not able to sleep. My Swami has not bestowed His
grace on
me saying, “This poor creeper like girl needs my grace.” (“ivaLum Or
peNkodi
enRu irangaar”- kodi- creeper implying it needs the support- Emperumaan..)
He
had already stolen my five jnAnEndhriyAs – Pleasre take me to
ThirukkuRunkudi, where the The Lord- whose Divine lustrous body is
like the
“kuvaLai” flower, is residing on His own free will.
2. The youthful, chill cold breeze that touches the flower of jasmine
and
then along with the bright cold moon rays, liters here and there and
tortures me to finish me off completely. Even for one night, I am not
able
to sleep. These girls, whose bangles never fall off, are talking all
sorts
of allegations against me, without any sense or knowledge. (“pEthaiyar
pEthaimaiyaalirundhu pEsilum pEsuga peyvaLaiyaar..”) Please save
me by
taking me to ThirukkuRunkudi, where Emperumaan (who has the fragrant
flower
bedecked Periya PiraaTTi in His Chest always) resides.
3. Even the dawn and the dusk torture me; at night, every fraction of
a
second elongates and appears as if it is longer than the praLaya kaalam
(
“oozhi” ). The cool breeze also appears like the scorching fiery air;
That
Lord grew so huge and stands; shining like the blue gem stone; - so
beautiful and gorgeous; (to add further to my suffering). There are
may
things to torment me on this earth (created by Him); Before they torment
me
any further, please save me by taking me to ThirukkuRunkudi, which
is
surrounded by dense gardens where beautiful peacocks live in.
4. The twangs of the bell tied around the neck of black bull, (having
mated
with the white youthful cows)- also disturb my mind. I am not able
to sleep
even for a night, suffering from the pangs of separation, talking about
the
greatness and kalyANa guNAs of PeraruLALan (the most merciful Emperumaan),
who is considered like the huge precious stone and is placed on the
heads of
Nithyasooris, with great enjoyment and reverence (perumaNi vaanavar
ucchi
vaittha pEraruLALan perumai pEsi). Please save me by taking me to
ThirukkuRunkudi, which is surrounded by water canals where the most
valuable
stones are swept aside to its shores.
5. The bull’s neck bell, the music that comes out of Cowherd Boy KaNNan’s
flute, the gentle evening along with the breeze, the bright crescent
moon
that appears at the twilight, - all these combinedly make this sinner’s
heart suffer. These do not act as they did before (they were friendly
before
as they made me happy when He was with me; now they torture me and
aggravate
my suffering, when He is away). Please save me by taking me to
ThirukkuRunkudi, where that cloud like, Blue hued colored Emperumaan
resides.
6.These young girls talk all things against me, at all times (day and
night); Let them talk and scold me anything. Let them be knowledgeable
and
be good people. I don’t know about them and their caliber. Only if
they know
about me, then only we can learn about them. (They don’t know us and
our
longing and languishing for Him) We don’t have feminine qualities (accham,
naaNam, madam, etc.)here. We are not ashamed of longing for Him. Even
if
they laugh and feel rejoiced at it, we would never forget the greatest,
most
merciful, blue gemstone like, Emperumaan. Please save me by taking
me to
ThirukkuRunkudi, where the fresh flowers bloom and have grown dense.
7. Long, ruddy lined, large well spread eyed, dark hued colored Swami-
Chief
Emperumaan- came close to me and said, “What is your worry? I will
not leave
you” and now has made my body go thinner; bangles fall off. I am not
able to
comprehend the strength of the five arrowed manmathan (Cupid) striking
me..
Please save me taking me to ThirukkuRunkudi Divya Desam, densely filled
with
honey dripping, cool branches of trees.
8. This ocean’s noise is not just ordinary (that also disturbs me).
Listen
to me. KaNNapiraan’s flute music comes to me and finished me off entirely.
Also before that Manmathan sends his arrows so strong on me for my
final
end, please save me by taking me to ThirukkyuRunkudi, realizing the
merciful
heart of that Cowherd Boy who stole the hearts of the Cowherd folks
with His
most charming, wonderful deeds. (Due to His merciful nature, he won’t
let me
perish.) (kOvalar kootthan kuRippu aRindhu kuRunkudikkE ennai uytthidumin)
9. Even when I perform anjali (obeisance) with folded hands, He does
not
have any mercy on me. Since my birth, He has been only snatching away
my
feminity and has given me only this “pasalai” disease (the body gets
pale
and thin, suffering from the pangs of separation). I do not know where
He
has gone. Also my tender breasts are getting old and wasted without
hugging
His large Divine Strong Chest. Please save me by taking me to
ThirukkuRunkUdi, where Emperumaan- the Chief of Nithyasooris, - the
One who
performs most wonderful deeds, stealing the hearts- resides eternally.
10. Please save me by taking me to ThiruukuRunkudi Emperumaan- the Swami
of
all worlds; the Deva Piraan who destroyed lankA; who has Periya PiraaTTi
in
his divine Chest always; who has my heart also as His residence always
as
PeraruLALan; The King, who never leaves the eyes and heart of Sri VaishNava
srI- Kaliyan-having learn to compose the kalyANa guNAs of Emperumaan.
SarvEshwaran, out of His own free will, and due to His most merciful
nature
and His sowseelya guNA, is here at ThirukkuRunkudi, waiting only to
bless
us. Hence, come one and come all! – Calls ThirumangaiAzhwAr.
1. Emperumaan, who lets Rudran, having worn the string of bones, and
the
skin of tiger, stay and share in His Divine Body, out of His Sowseelya
guNA
(the guNA of mixing with persons of lower stature) resides in this
Divya
Desam of ThirukkuRunkudi, the crane’s little one climbs onto low lying
tree
branch and eats a portion of the fish “veLLiRaa” from its mother’s
mouth.
2. The noisy, high raising waves of the ocean come and appear to be
touching
with the droplets of water, on the Divine Body of Emperuman, Pristinely
Purest PerumAn, who reclines and has His Yoga NithrA, on ThiruvananthAzhwAn,
residing on this Divya Desam of ThirukkuRunkudi, where the red legged
swan
unites with its mate, on the most fragrant lotus flower in cool beautiful
ponds.
3. “vaazhak kaNdOm! Vandhu kaaNmin thoNdeergaaL!”- Oh servants (of Sriman
Narayanan)! (We have) seen – realized- the way to “live” (live eternally-
never undergo deaths and births). Come and see! It is this Divya Desam
of
ThirukkuRunkudi, where lady crane bird, with a cunning look (looking
for the
prey), searches for its prey on the banks of the fully-grown fields,
for
sharing the prey (food) with its red-legged weak mate. Here Emperumaan,
who
took Huge Varaaha Roopam, the ruddy lined Lord, who has the large dark
cloud
colored ThirumEni (Divya maNgaLa vigraham), resides permanently, on
his own
free will and desire.
4. Lord Ramapiraan, who made the heads of rAvaNan be thrown away and
scattered on the ground, and cut His hands and chest, resides in this
Divya
Desam of ThirukkuRunkudi, where flowers spread fragrance everywhere,
and
bees that drink honey hum and night.
5. PerumAn, who drove the chariot in the battle filed so successfully,
finishing the kings off (who had had strong roaring elephants in their
large
kingdom), resides permanently in this Divya Desam, of ThirukkuRunkudi,
where
the bimbha fruit like red-mouthed parrots, speak sweetly like that
of young
women with collyrium laden eye lids) live in ThirukkuRunkudi.
6. “thee neer vaNNa maamalar koNdu viraiyEndhith/
thoo neer paravith thozhumin; ezhumin thoNdeergaaL!”
Oh servants (of Sriman Narayanan)! The Pure you- take the agni (fire)
for
dhoopam; ner (water) for argyam; the coloured flowers for archana..
etc..(
fragrant dhravyams like sandal paste); offer “anjali” to PerumAn by
prostrating Him.. And be saved. This PerumAn has got dark blue ocean
like
ThirumEni (Divine Body). He resides permanently in this Divya Desam
of
ThirukkuRunkudi, where the tall buildings appear to touch the crescent
moon
that loiters in the sky.
7. adiyeergaaL! (Oh dAsa bhUthAs of Sriya: Pathi Sriman Narayanan)!
Leave
your thoughts on those creeper like narrow waisted women, and your
suffering
(due to that) and reach ThirukkuRukudi. Coming to speak of the beauty
of
women folk in this Divya Desam they are like saakshaat Sri Mahalakshmi.
The
tender flower buds in the charming gardens are found in this Divya
Desam
like the white teeth inside the bimbha fruit like mouth.
8. “nam thamargaaL!”- Oh my dear friends! Take the flower garlands,
and the
loose fresh flowers to offer ThirukkuRunkudi Emperumaan with insatiable
bhakti. Reach there. This is the most beautiful and fertile Divya Desam
with
cool ponds where the “thaaraa” birds are found on its top searching
for the
prey.
9. senRu paNimin; yezhumin; thozhumin; thoNdeergaaL!”- Oh Bhagawathas,
who
have the “ruchi” (taste) for performing eternal kaimkaryam! Reach
ThirukkkuRunkudi, and pay your obeisance to Emperumaan here; prostrate
at
His Feet; get saved. You can get rid of all your accumulated sins and
subsequent sufferings of yours due to those “paapams”. Bees hum day
and
night and fresh flowers spread fragrance all over at this Divya Desam.
10. This ten is on Emeprumaan who resides permanenetly at ThirukkuRunkudi
Divya Desam; who had bent the bow to destroy the lankA; who had broken
the
tusk of strong, angry elephant (during Krishnavatar). It is sung by
the poet
Kaliyan, who is capable of composing in accordance with saashtras (meters
and grammar). Those who recite this faultless, nicely worded ten with
great
meanings, will have no sins stay with them at all.
AzhwAr addresses his mind saying “We are not able to get rid of our
longing
for the worldly pleasures; this life is tremendously transitory; flickering
life; never ever permanent; the carnal desires attack us; the material
wealth is never permanent and does not stay with us for ever. Realizing
this, and leaving all of them, if at all, we search for athma jnAnanm;
then
we need to realize that other religions and doctrines are completely
“non-Vedic” and utter only the name of Lord of Thiruvallavaazh. (Excellent
ten- more appropriate for us, in its entirety.)
1. Oh mind! If you have realized the transitory nature of life and that
of
relations like father, mother, children, other relatives, et al, and
have
realized that it is not right for this AthmA, who is eternal sEsha
bhUthan
(servant) for Emperumaan, to be caught up in such bonded lives after
lives,
all that you need to do is: Utter the Divine Name of Thiruvallavaazh
Emperumaan, who took the strong KaNNan avtaar; who is a Nirvaahakan
of
everything and everyone; who is the creator of all during srushti and
who is
the destination for all during praLayam.
2. Oh nenjamE! (Mind!) If you are scared of (or apprehensive that it
is
dangerous) sensuous pleasures from young women, who have tender, narrow
waist (that conquers even the lightning and the creeper in this thinness
and
beauty), then all that you need to do is: Have the strength to utter
the
divine name of Thiruvallavaazh Emperumaan, who had gone as a messenger
for
the kings, Pancha paaNdavaas, whose crown are densely bedecked with
precious
gems stones.
3. Oh nenjamE! If you think it is wrong to listen to sweet sugar coated
lies
as truthful statements from those young women of tender breasts where
beautiful ornaments loiter, then, all that you need to do is: Have
the
strength to utter the divine name of Thiruvallavaazh Emperumaan, who
had
appeared as Vammanan and begged the three measures of earth from mahaa
bhali.
4. nenjamE! If you plan to escape from thoughts and influences of people
who
always dream of hugging the tender breasts of young women, then all
that you
need to is: Have the strength to utter the divine name of Thiruvallavaazh
Emperumaan, who stands permanently at ThiruvEmkatam, and shows Himself
to
Devas; who shows Himself always to Nithyasooris at Paramapadham; and
who has
the Divinely beautiful ocean like bluish form.
5. nenjamE! If you think of those kings who ruled so greatly vast area,
under their umbrella, surrounded by elephants, and have all become
non
existent now by simply perishing, (realizing the transitory flickering
nature of lives as well as the material power /wealth), then all that
you
need to do is: Have the strength to utter the divine name of Thiruvallavaazh
Emperumaan, the little baby KaNNan, who had placed His one Hand on
Poothanai’s large poisonous breast and sucked the life of Poothanai
along
with the milk.
6. nenjE! Entering into the sarIram of these births, if you are scared
of
the attacks and influence of those cruel five sense organs, who torment
you
continuously asking for their respective sensual pleasures,), then
all that
you need to do is: Have the strength to utter the divine name of Lord
of
Thiruvallavaazh, where Brahmins consider the four Vedsa, five agnis,
six
Veda angas, etc., as their very lives.
7. NenjamE! If you (have realized) consider the words (statement of
vibharItha jnAnam) that this sarIram (which is filled only with cluster
of
diseases), is the permanent one, most truthful, - as false, all that
you
need to do is: Have the strength to utter the divine name of Lord of
Thiruvallavaazh, who is the Brighjt Sun, the Moon, the dark rainy clouds
and
all others- the Most wonderful Lord who resides here permanently.
8. nenjamE! The skies where the clouds wander; the fire, the water;
the
Earth- the Air- a combination of these pancha bhUthAs- is this body
of ours
and if you realize that this is not permanenet and is not going to
save you,
- all that you need to do is: Have the strength to utter the divine
name of
Lord of Thiruvallavaazh, where He along with His unparalleled, Divine
Consort Periya PiraaTTi, seated on the Golden Lotus flower, who adorns
Her
tender breasts with most fragrant sandal paste.
9. NenjamE! “veLLiyaar; piNdiyaar; bOdhiyaar; enRu ivar OdhuginRa- kaLLa
nool thammaiyum karumam anRu -enRu uyyak karudhinaayEl”-( veLLiyaar-
Those
who consider Sivan, seated in white mountain (Kailasam) as the Parathvam;
piNdiyaar- Jains (Arhathar?) Bodhiyaar- Buddhists)
- If you have realized
that the words and paths of Saivites, Jains and Buddhists are not the
RIGHT
PATH and are wrong scriptures (kaLLa nool) and wish to actually get
saved,
all that you need to do is: Have the strength to utter the divine name
of
Lord of Thiruvallavaazh, where jnAnis go and pay their obeisance to
their
Lord (having realized the only way and the Goal as He); the One who
granted
most mercifully the nectar to Devas- Udhaara SwabhAvan- and who resides
here
permanently.
10. This ten is on the Lord of Thiruvallavaazh, where Vedic scholars,
faultless Brahmins live; It is composed by Kaliyan of beautiful, vast
Thiruvaali naadu, surrounded by gardens. Those who recite this ten,
composed
by him, will first be blessed to rule this earth and then rule Paramapadham
too.
AzhwAr again addresses his mind (nenjam) and asks his mind to come
to
ThirumaalirunchOlai to pay obeisance to Sarva rakshakan; One who grants
all
that we desire and seek- who is Sowlabhyan.
1. Oh my (obedient) mind! At the outset, let me tell this. Do not get
swayed
with the temptation of uniting with those fragrant haired young women
and
leave it. Let us go and pay obeisance to our Swami- the One who has
the
Seven Oceans; Seven mountains and the whole Universe as His sarIram;
the
Lord of ThirumaalirunchOlai, where the water falls from the mountains
carry
along with them the sandal trees, and peacock feathers and are accumulated
herein.
2. Oh foolish mind! (mada nenjE!) The Lord of ThirumalirunchOlai is
the
SarvEshwaran, is the One who has the shining, most resplendent crown
on His
head; One who reclines on ThiruvananthAzhwAn and has His Yoga nithrA;
who is
praised by Nithya sooris and all other people across this whole Universe,
paying their obeisance to Him with flowers and waters, calling all
others,
“Let us pray to Him at all times and get saved”. This Divya Desam of
Thirumaliruncholai is where bees sit on most fragrant honey dripping
“kuRinchi” flowers that bloom in between the bamboo trees. Come; Let
us pay
our obeisance to Him here.
3. Oh mada nenjE! (Foolish mind!) In order to do great upakaram to us
to get
rid of these samsaaric afflictions, He had created this earth (so that
we
can do our karmanushtAnams, in accordance with saasthras, realize Him
and
attain Him) due to His parama krupai, so that today we can stand and
praise
Him. Also, He is One who had appeared as Vaamanan and took huge Trivikrama
avtaar and let the whole Earth obtain the Divine touch from His Lotus
Feet.
That Emperumaan, who is our Swami is here at ThirumaalirunchOlai, where
gypsies use the “vEngai” trees for measuring the passage of time (as
these
trees bloom flowers once in a year), and the small shining “maNi” that
they
aim from their hands shed and spread light everywhere. Come; Let us
pay our
obeisance to Him here.
4. mada nenjE! Emperumaan, who had sucked the cunning Poothanai’s breastmilk
and killed her; who killed the completely non-feminine Thaatakai with
fiery
arrows; resides here at ThirumalirunchOlai, where tall ‘vEngai trees
and
“kOngu trees, between which kuRinchi flowers bloom with honey flooding
everywhere, Come let us pay our obeisance to Him here.
5. mada nenjE! I will never bow down – said rAvaNana and fought with
the
Lord. He had all his ten strong heads worn with gem-bedecked crowns,
thrown
onto the ground by Emperumaan. RAvaNan’s remaining part of the body
appeared
to have been in trance, danced in the battlefield, by Emperumaan. This
Emperumaan resides in ThirumaalirunchOlai, where the tall bamboo tree
braches move with the wind and pierce the honeycomb and floods the
whole
area with honey. Come; Let us pay our obeisance to Him here.
6. mada nenjamE! (Foolish mind!) AdhisEshan -the one who exhales poison
on
enemies (who do not have love and bhakti for the Lord) is the bed of
our
Swami- Emperumaan, who reclines on the Milky Ocean; who threw the
dhEnukaasuran (the calf) at the “viLAmpazha” tree to kill him; who
danced
having pot in His Hand with women; - Such most wonderful Emperumaan
is here
at ThirumalirunchOlai, where the clouds immerse themselves in the dark
ocean, drink the waters, and roar with huge thunders in the sky, appearing
as if they are dark huge elephants standing on the mountains, the sight
of
which scares the lions that roar with fear. (What a poetic imagination
by
ThirumangaiAzhwAr!) Come; Let us pay our obeisance to Him here.
7. Emperumaan- who threw the asuran (in whose form dhEnukAsuran appeared)
at
the tree thereby killing him, - who is of the divine Beautiful form
of dark,
vast ocean like form, is here permanenetly residing at ThirumalirunchOlai,
where tall gardens touch the sky, and honey dripping from these trees
aare
drunk by beautiful deer. Come; Let us pay our obeisance to Him here.
8. mada nenjE! The waves appear to touch even the clouds- in this milky
ocean, on top of which Emperumaan reclines on ThiruvananthAzhwAn and
has His
Yoga nithrA; One who removed the cruel anger of the horse;- the One
who
appears always as the waters to quench anyone’s thirst, when one sees
Him;
One who is of the dark cloud form. He is here at ThirumalirunchOlai,
where
the (madha jalam) waters fall trickling down the heads of huge male
angry
elephants and bees drink those waters. Come; Let us pay our obeisance
to Him
here.
9. Foolish mind! Unintelligent Jains and Buddhists, et al (pundhi il
samaNar, buddhar enRu ivargaL- otthana pEsavum uganthittu”) speak their
own
statements (against Vedic truths, misinterpreting them), and Emperumaan
ignoring all these religions, (relish being with His devotees who hold
onto
His Feet, with an unflinching faith), who is Chief and Nathan for me
and all
my ancestors too, who is the Chief of Nithyasooris, who resides here
at
ThirumalirunchOlai permanently, where tribal women folks staying under
the
shadow of those sandal trees, come to this temple and utter few manthras
praising this Lord, to be blessed with wedlock. Come; Let us pay our
obeisance to Him here.
10. Kaliyan, one who rules Thiruvaali naadu; who has large sharp spear
in
his hand; who has the nature of bowing down to the devotees and servants
of
maNi vaNNan -Emperuman of ThirumalirunchOlai, surrounded by fertile
gardens,
composed this ten and those who recite this ten written in chaste Tamil
will
be blessed to rule this earth surrounded by oceans.
AzhwAr pleaded Emperumaan to get him rid of the worldly life to
attain
Emperumaan. It did not happen. AzhwAr loses himself and gets into Parakala
nAyaki bhAvam, when she has already had experience of uniting with
the Lord
and the Lord has now deserted her. Due to her suffering, she is not
able to
express herself and the “mother” of Parakala nAyaki speaks.
1. “moovaril mun mudhalvan; - He is the first and Primordial Chief among
the
trio; He is the One who reclines on Milky Ocean; the One who creates
(through four faced Brahma), the Universe from his naabhi kamalam (lotus
from His navel); who has protected the Universe by retaining it in
His
stomach during the end of Cosmic Cycle and brings out during shrushti;
He is
the Chief of Nithya sooris; He is the Lord of ThirumalirunchOlai; the
head
of cowherd group by name Govindhan; - Is my creeper like waisted beautiful
girl able to bear being deserted (by Him) after being hugged by such
greatest Emperumaan?

Thiruvarangam, full of tall punnai trees, and dense beautiful gardens,
and
surrounded by the cool waters of Cauveri river; the first, primordial

ThirumaalirunchOlai; This place (sthalam), is surrounded by beautiful
gardens. Is my darting, fish like eyed beautiful girl, able to bear

During maha praLayam (Cosmic cycle end), the Emperumaan, ate the entire

black
hued emerald mountain like beautiful huge Divine Form;- He is the One
who is
here at ThirumaalirunchOlai, where strong big elephants live in. This
Lord
is the king of everyone and everything in this Universe. Is my girl,
adorned
by beautiful ornaments, not qualified to go and approach such greatest
Emperumaan?
4. “singamadhaay avuNan thiRalaaga mun keeNdugandha/
pangaya maamalarkkaN paranai em paranchudarai-“
He took the lion form and tore open the asuran’s body, and enjoyed
for
having helped the devotee (Prahalada); He has the large, beautiful
divine
lotus like eyes; Sarvaadhikan; ParanjyOthi; My Swamy; - He resides
at
ThirumaalirunchOlai, where the tall mountains appear to touch the clouds

and begged for three measures of earth and took huge form as Trivikraman
to
measure the whole Universe; - He resides in ThirumaalirunchOlai, suurounded
by honey dripping flower filled beautiful, dense gardens. He is the
Chief of
even nithya sooris; - Is my girl not qualified to see Him and pay her
obeisance (prostrating at his Feet)?
6. nEsam illadhavarkkum ninaiyaadhavarkkum ariyaan- Those who have not
love
for Him; no bhakti for Him and do not think of Him- he is simply
incomprehensible and can not be attained easily at all; He appeared
for
everyone (blessed) to see at MathurA, as Kutti KaNNan. He is
here now at
ThirumaalirunchOlai (for us -blessed), for everyone to pay their obeisance.
He is Kesavan, ParipoorNan with all most auspicious attributes (samastha
kalyANa guNAs). Is my beautiful sharp fish like eyed girl not able
to go to
Him and be blessed to see Him?
7. “puLLinai vaay piLandhu porumaa kari kombositthu/ kaLLa chagadam
udhaittha karu maaNikka malaiyai”- pakAsuran’s (the bird) mouth was
simply
torn apart and the huge elephant’s tusk was broken by KaNNan; he also
(as an
infant), kicked the wheel Asuran and killed him; He is like dark, very
huge,
beautiful emerald mountain. He is SarvEshwaran. He resides in this
Diyva
Desam of ThirumaalirunchOlai. He is Parama krupaaLu; udhaaran (most
merciful
for all) ; - will my girl not be able to pay her obeisance to such
greatest
Emperumaan.
8. “paartthanuku anRu aruLi bhaarathatthu oru thEr mun ninRu/ kaatthavan

him.
He is blue hued dark emerald like mountain- most beautiful, always
enjoyed
by Nithyasooris; Parama pavithran (most pristinely pure Lord) is here
at
ThirumaalirunchOlai. Will my dark longhaired beautiful girl paying
her
obeisance to this great, unparalleled Emperumaan, ever happen?
9. “valampuri aazhiyaanai, varaiyaar thiRaLthOlan thannai/ pulampuri
noolavanap pozhil vEmkata vEdhiyanai- The One who has the Divine ChakrA
and
the Conch on His resplendent strong mountain like shoulders; who has

vehicle-
can be seen and enjoyed by this girl was composed in this ten by Kaliyan,

AzhwAr now enjoys ThirumalirunchOlai Emperumaan at ThirukkOshtiyoor.
How He
blessed us with so many wonderful avatars and How gracefully He blesses
us
with his sowlabhyam guNA showing Himself at ThirukOttiyoor. Let us
enjoy

the
sandal branches being swept aside by the running stream of river waters
to
the shores.
4. This greatest Lord- Emperumaan- most mercifully, on His own let a
part of
His ThirumEni be occupied by Sivan, one who has Ox as his vehicle;
who has
the bright shining axe in his hand. He is the beloved Divine Consort
of
Periya PiraaTTi. He resides at ThirukkOttoyoor, where youthful bee

fragrant “cheNbagam” and jasmine flowers and drinks the honey.

He
is here at ThirukkOttiyoor, where the white flags, tied onto the gem
stone
impregnated top of tall buildings (amidst the clouds), appear to touch
the
moon. So beautiful is this sthalam.
6. This Lord of ThirukkOttiyoor – My swami- the One who enslaved me,

Emperuman saying, “This Divya Desam is where Emperumaan comes and resides”,
