Dear bhagavathas,
Sri.Madhavakannan of Singapore is doing a great kaimkaryam of translating the divya prabandham in a simple English providing the basic meaning of the pasurams. His write ups are concise yet filled with great anubavams. His translations are strictly as per our sampradayam and adiyen has benefitted a lot from his wonderful translations. So far he has completed Thiruvaymozhi and Peria Thirumozhi and few thiruvandhadhis. adiyen is sure that he will continue to enlighten us with the balance prabandhams in the coming days.
Sri.Madhavakannan used to present meanings for every ten pasurams in one posting. Most of you aware that all such postings are being archeived in Sri.Mani's Srivaishnavam page and also in bhakti list egroups site. But since the postings are scattered spanning over a period of two years it may be bit difficult to browse and read them. adiyen is attempting to compile them for the benefit of bhagavathas who can read the entire Peria thirumozhi in say 11 documents.Hope this will be of use to you.
Now over to Sri.Madhavakannan and adiyen won't interfere with him and Thirumangai azhvar, hereafter.
Dasan venkat
Sri:
Dearest Sisters and Brothers, Happy makara sankaranthi! Happy Pongal!
I pray to Divya Damapthis for Their blessings and AchAryAs and ThirumangaiAzhwAr for Their anugraham for my yet another rash, brazen attempt to enter into tranlsation kaimkaryam. Please forgive me for my errors and mistakes. Anything good in it, I am not to be "blamed"; All Emperumaan's grace and AzhwAr's and AchAryan anugraham. All mistakes, blunders are mine; Please pat (slap) my back for that.
ThirumangaiAzhwAr's Periya Thirumozhi is what we are going to enjoy next. All of you know well about this Great AzhwAr, and he needs no introduction. However, for novices like me, just a quick account of his biography:
In his early days, as a king, our Lord Narayana was far from AzhwAr's
thoughts. His spiritual journey started with a commitment he made
to his sweetheart Kumudhavalli in exchange for her hand in marriage.
While most women may have asked for her suitor's everlasting love, or a
diamond ring, or a golden bangle, all our gentle lady Kumudhavalli sought
from AzhwAr was that he must wear the marks of Sri Vaishnava and serve
food (amudhu) for 1,000 Vaishnavaas everyday for a period of one
year. This service, initiated as a price for carnal pleasure,
turned into a labour of divine love towards the devotees of our Lord Narayana.
Years rolled by. AzhwAr spent all his wealth in the service of Vaishnavas.
With his coffers empty, AzhwAr could not continue the service. He
could not bear the thought of having to turn away the Vasihnavas who by
then were accustomed to blessing his abode with their presence.
The feeling of despair turned to anger at the sight of the greedy idle rich strolling around with all their gaudy and ostentatious jewels and showing contempt for the simple and devout Vasihnavas. This was enough to drive our Great AzhwAr to actions. But it was not just fame that was in store for our AzhwAr.
Our Lord Sriya: Pathih Sriman Narayana decided to intervene and turn AzhwAr away from the ways of the sword. He and His consort, our divine mother Sri, appeared before him as a newly wed couple bedecked with priceless ornaments. AzhwAr, who hid himself at ThirumaNankollai, stopped the couple and forcibly relieved them of all the jewellery.
But, there was one piece on our Lord's toe that wouldn't come off however
much AzhwAr tried. In frustration AzhwAr
put his head on the lotus feet of our Lord (!) with the intention of
biting the ring off. He asked the Lord as to what is the magic manthra
for removing? (The Lord must have mis understood that AzhwAr enquires regarding
samsaara bond!) and that sort of SaraNagathy did work! at that moment AzhwAr
was drawn in by the beauty of the lotus feet and realized
the true nature of the couple standing in front of him. The Lord
then instructed the esoteric meaning of the "magic manthra" i.e
"Thirumandhiram" or Ashtaaksharam for the Most Blessed AzhwAr, to get
initiated by the Lord Himself, with Their "thadutthaaTkoLLal".
Thus AzhwAr learnt of the efficacy of the divine name "Narayana" from our Lord Narayana Himself!
He immediately burst out to sing the poem "Periya Thirumozhi" (Great divine poem) consisting of 1,084 verses. The first ten of these verses are dedicated to the name "Narayana." These first 10 emotional verses give aid and comfort to people.
AzhwAr comes down hard on himself with intense self criticism for the
violence he had caused, though for a good cause, for having sought fleeting
worldly pleasures, for having squandered his days on mundane pursuits.
He ends each of
these ten verses with a celebration of the divine name Narayana, for
after finding this sweet name, AzhwAr declares, he was free from all the
sins and assured of the everlasting bliss at the lotus feet of our sweet
Lord Narayana (Biography passage -stole- from Sri Dileepan's
post in Dec 95- in bhakti list - Thanks, Dileepan!)
His compositions were :
1. Periya thirumozhi
2. Periya thirumadal
3. SiRiya thirumadal
4. Thiru nedunthANdakam (TNT)
5. Thiru KurunthANdakam(TKT)
6.Thiru vezhuk kurrirukkai.
His pAsurams are marvellous; excellent and have unsurpassed beauty in them. ParAsara Bhattar made use of his TNT to win over his counter part, an advaitin scholar in his arguments and later the advaitin became his disciple 'nam jeeyar'.
Sri RanganAtha himself heard and was greatly pleased with that argument re-enacted from Bhattar quoting from TNT (Please read excellent posts of Sri V. SadagOpan on TNT and TKT duringFeb 96 from Bhakti Archives - a real feast to each one of you).
Thirumangai AzhwAr (a KING, a person who had all kingly royal comforts) walked all the way and VISITED almost all temples. He is simply GREAT, my dearest brothers and sisters. He is JUST S U P E R B AzhwAr. His wordings are his outpourings straight from his heart.
It is told and declared by Tamil Poets of all kinds that His paasurams contain ezhutthu (writing), sol,(words) poruL, (meanings), yaappu (Grammar), aNi (figure of sppech?) etc.. His songs are so great and so nice to recite! It is simple and quite lucid too for reciters and those who know even little Tamil, can understand the lovely emotional outbursts of AzhwAr and his bhakti.
His paasurams depict mainly the archaavathaarams of Divya dEsams, and when He enjoys Them with the descrition of Divya Desams, they simply immerse us in unbounded limitless bliss and pErAnandham.
Thai AzhwAr, when Kumudavalli had asked him to become a Srivaishnava, got his pancha samskaaram done by ThirunaRaiyoor Nambhi. He got his Thiru ManthrOpadEsam from Sri SowrirAja PerumAL; AzhwAr praises These Lords individually with 100 pAsurams! Nambhi naamam sollil NamO NaaraayaNamE".
This AzhwAr had Great regards for NammAzhwAr. He appealed and requested Sri Ranganathan for lsitening to Thiruvaaymozhi from Kaarthigai sukla Ekadasi and now all Sri vaishnava Divya Desams celebrate this uthasavam of reciting Thiruvaaymozhi.
The essence of Periya Thirumozhi is: The worldly life is sorrowful;
It can be cured only by the grace of Sriman Narayanan; Hence, get saved
by paying obeisance to Him at His Divya Desams (106 Thiruppathis on this
Earth). AzhwAr visited almost about 80 Thiruppathis, all on foot; He sang
1253 passurams, next only to NammAzhwAr; (but NammAzhwAr never went
to any Divya Desams; The Lords came to Him!)… Thirumangai AzhwAr padi
padi paraparappaay Thirndhaar…He declares: If one surrenders to Sriman
Narayanan, "enRum vinaiyaagina saaragilaavE"… (Never will sins accrue to
your account!)..
This prabhandham should be read, re-read, re-re read and enjoyed! So
nice are they… Last Kaarthigai Kritthigai nakshathram (during AzhwAr Thirunakshathram)
as instructed by our KaNNan Swami, I could recite Periya Thirumozhi for
ten days preceding his Thirunakshathram and completed on his birthday.
It was a great feeling of having read his lovely Periya Thirumozhi. Dearest
Sisters and Brothers, my attempting to write these translation is: 1. Those
who do not know Tamil, can get to know the meanings, and enjoy. 2. Those
who wish to know the meanings (though we all know Tamil, it is still difficult
to understand the
meanings) and 3. Being a self-centred person, I myself would like to
enjoy them, by reading the pAsurams and writing these translations.
May I request for all your aseervaathams and wishes for such a rash attempt? (Fools rush in where angels fear to tread).
Thirumangai AzhwAr ThiruvadigaLE SaraNam
"thunjum bOdhu azhaimin.. thuyar varil ninaimin… thuyarileer sollinum nanRaam… (While you sleep, call… or when you feel depressed and sorrowful… call… or no worries.. no problems.. stilll it is so sweet to utter…. Call "Narayana Narayana" says "Thirumangai AzhwAr)
In the first hundred, ThirumangaiAzhwAr enjoyed the Thirumanthra
laabham and the esoteric meanings of the same and then realised the Lord
housed in Thirumanthram being available so gracefully at Divya dEsams for
us as our refuge.
In this hundred AzhwAr desires the sustenance of thoughts on Bhagawadh kaimkaryam alone in his mind, always and pleads the Lord for the same. First ten of this hundred, describes AzhwAr's appreciation of his mind for its able support and thought on Bhagawadh kaimkaryam uninterruptedly.
1. On my friendly supportive mind! My Swami- the One who stays permanently in the hearts of thapasvis- the One who stays at the hills of ThiruvEmkatam where the smoke arising out of burnt "agil" tree branches and stems that are thrown on the fire by the forest hunters- the One who appeared as little dwarf Vaamanan - and to such Greatest Lord- you have desired to perform kaimkaryam; You have sought such Greatest sweet kaimkaryam like Nithya sooris!
2. This Lord certainly grants mOksham and hence, definitely we will
get to perform servitude to Him. - Declares AzhwAr in this pAsuram. This
Lord- is unparalleled peerless- unbounded Greatest Lord who has no relations.
He, out of His own will, blesses few and due to which their sins and sorrows
are removed! And their births are destroyed! Oh my supportive mind! How
can I admire you and appreciate you! You have become servant to the Lord
of ThiruvEmkatam where kuRinji-tuned songs are hummed by bees along with
the gypsy women- You have sought to perform kaimkaryam to such Most virtuous
Swami, who is there at
ThiruvEmkatam ONLY TO ENSLAVE US AND LET US PERFORM SUCH SERVITUDE
ONLY. HE IS WAITING FOR THAT.
3. Oh my mind! The adiyaars- Bhagawathas- who carry the flower garlands
and praise the Lord- and their relatives are saved by the Lord of ThiruvEmkatam
by standing here (at ThirumalA) and are sent to Parama padham from here
straight. He stays in that ThiruvEmkatam as the temple where the joyful
bees are drinking honey; The Lord- who rules Sri Vaikuntam (as Nithya vibhUti)
and this ThiruvEmkatam (i.e. the Earth- as leelA vibhUthi) to whom you
have desired to perform eternal kaimkaryam.
(You are great!)
4. My dear mind! You have done a good thing without getting distracted! The Lord who has appeared here as various avtaars to save the devotees (who had sought to serve Him)- who has settled at Divya dEsams and sends the devotees through archiraadhi maargam to Parama padham. Such Emperumaan is Gopi vallabhan; My Swami. This Lord of ThiruvEkatam is the dearest Lord of Nithya sooris and the life of theirs. You have sought to perform kaimkaryam to Him. Great!
5. Oh mind! You did not get distracted by those Jains and Buddhists, who are there in their respective temples with their demi gods. Good that you are able to seek for performing eternal kaimkaryam to the Lord of ThiruvEmkatam (where dEvAs come and praise Him) - the Most Beautiful eyed Lord- the One who does to the satisfaction of His devotees by fulfilling their desires.
6. Oh mind! You have sought to perform kaimkaryam to the Lord of ThirumalA that is full of lovely deer. Good that you did NOT care a damn about the fat pot bellied, saffron clad Jains who have shaved off their heads, and wander along with one another, eat eat and keep on getting fat. You are a great vivEki! You have done a right thing!
7. Having only the arguments and tharkaam as their forte, these jains have attempted to (are trying to) establish their religion. They eat a lump of rice mixed with solid cured and get their throats choked up. Oh mind! That's all they do. Argue- and eat. Nothing else. You are great! You have sought to perform Nithya kaimkaryam to the Lord, who has got ThiruvEmkatam as His permanent place of stay - who is the antharyaami of the Sun.
8. When varous people talk about and describe SarvEshwaran- some
say, "He is there at the farthest place and is inaccessible to us" and
do not attempt to go near Him or reach Him; some say" He is very close
and so near" but not seek Him; some think of Him as a small person, by
citing His Sowlabhyam and go away (by ignoring Him); Some say "You just
can NOT dare reach Him; for He is so Big!" Oh my dear mind! Though they
all blabbered such statements, you never listened to them. You have sought
to perform kaimkaryam to the Lord of ThiruvEmkatam where pearls drop
from the bamboo tree stems; - the Lord of Cowherds- Why did you never utter
a word to me about Him and His greatness, about your desire to seek Him?
(You should have told me!)
9. My mind! Listen to me attentively; You mingled with people - got
long with them- ate with them and listened to them; Those who are devotees
of the Lord dance, sing His glories and pay their obeisance to Him; But
they never get to know His actual Greatness and Glories fully and completely.
The Lotus born BrahmA, the One who is praised by everyone- Indran- Sivan-
they too (ARE NOT aware of His Greatness) come to ThiruvEmkatam and pay
their obeisance to SarvEshwaran (the Chief of
Cowherd men) there. You are great! You have sought to perform eternal
servitude to Him!
10. The Lord - the One who stays permanently at ThiruvEmkatam, where the dark clouds move long with the lightning as if the darkness walks holding a lamp along with it- the One who appeared as a Hamsam to save Vedas and handed over to BrahmA- the Chief of Nithya sooris- about whom this poet of Thirumangai has sung in sweet Tamil pAsurams. Those who read them will have Paramapadham as their permanent abode.
PerumAL: Sri Veeraraghava PerumAL alias Vaidya Veeraraghavan; Thaayaar- Kanakavalli Thaayaar (also called Vasumathy). The Lord keeps His right palm on the head of SaalihOthra muni and the left palm showinh jnAna mudrA.
1. Covering himself under the disguise of a saffron clad sage, with
the legs shivering with fear (of being caught or found out), rAvaNan, went
with an ill, wrong, sinful intention of desiring for SitA PiraaTTi. Such
rAvaNan’s fort of lankA was completely destroyed by Lord Rama, the Chakravartthi
Thirumagan, with His sankalpam (pledge) to destroy the same. Such Greatest
Strongest Lord, was mocked at and teased by the cowherd women having beautiful
long bamboo like shoulders, saying "This
KaNNan has stolen butter from our home". Such a Sowlabhyan is He. This
Most wonderful Lord is having His Yoga NithrA at ThiruvevvuL.
2. rAvaNan, never considering SitA PiraaTTi as the Mother of whole Universe - (akila jagan maathaa) desired for Her. He never took Rama’s valour seriously and ignored it. He was misled to believe that the sword which he had obtained from demigods would do him a lot good. He was successful in all eight directions during the battle with everyone else - Such a Veeran- the most successful king- his ten heads simply were rolled down by a single arrow of Rama’s. This Lord - Sri Ramapiraan- is my Father- My Swami- My PerumAn- and is here having His Yoga NithrA at ThiruvevvuL.
3. During Ramavataar, He could not bear the pangs of separation from SitA PiraaTTi and sent a monkey as His messenger to lankA where none can dare cross the barriers of Oceans and enter into the kingdom of rAvaNA. RavaNan- the one who was granted such strengths by dEvAs, was effortlessly finished off by the anger of Lord Rama. The same Lord (after seeing HanmAn’s success as a messenger for Him to SitA PiraaTTi) wished to become a messenger Himself and went to the kingdom of DuryOdhanan, as PaaNdava dhUthan. The same Lord drove the chariot for Arjunan in KurukshEthra battle field. This Most Wonderful Lord is having His Yoga NithrA at ThiruvevvuL.
4. Nappinnai PiraaTTi- whose tender fingers ache even when holding the flower ball- was joined by the Strongest KaNNan after killing the mighty seven oxen. This Lord of Cowherd group- is the unparalleled, limitless Lord- the Son of Nandhan- the Lord of unbounded Most auspicious attributes (KalyANA guNAs)- Our Master- Our Father. This Lord of ours is having His Yoga NithrA at ThiruvevvuL.
5. This little son of Nandhan- during MahApraLya kaalam (the end of Cosmic cycle) reclined on a little Banyan leaf, (after eating the whole Universe, and its beings and non-beings, in order to protect and sustain the Universe) and had His Yoga NithrA there. Such Greatest Most Wonderful Lord - Red lotus eyed Lord- is having His Yoga NithrA at this Most fertile- most beautiful, most fragrant, ThiruvevvuL Divya dEsam, full of honey dripping flowery gardens.
6. (In this, and next two pAsurams, AzhwAr describes that Emperumaan
is the antharyaami in everyone and everything.) BhAgawathas- whose only
duty is to praise Him and pay their obeisance to Him, take turns and compete
with each other to pay their obeisance, by prostrating at the Lord’s Feet
and saying "KalyANa guNa gaNouga mahArNavaa! The Lord of
Most auspicious KalyANa GunAs! I am prostrating at Your Lotus Feet".
Such Greatest Lord is this PerumAn- The Red Lotus eyed Lord. The Lord -
who was praised by the Great Sage Sanaka et al that He is the Only One
who is the antharyaami of everyone including Sivan and BrahmA. Such greatest
Lord- The Primordial Chief is my Lord, who is having His Yoga
NithrA at ThiruvevvuL.
7. The antharyami of the Moon- the Five elements (Pancha bhUthAs)- the Father of BrahmA- the "Saami appan" (the Lord of Saama vEdham)- the Cause and Creator of everything (the "kaaraNa bhUthan")- the Lord who had spread His Divine Lotus Feet all over the Universe when He measured during Trivikramavataar- from where the river Ganga flowed (when the Foot’s finger nail only could be seen and washed reverently by BrahmA) and was taken by Sivan on his head. Such most Greatest Swami- My Lord – SarvEshawaran is having His Yoga NithrA at ThiruvevvuL.
8. The Lord, after His sankalpam to create, created BrahmA, Sivan and
by His mere thought alone executed His actions. Sathyakaaman; Sathyasankalpan.
The Lord, who blessed us with the pristine pure GithOpadEsam- the Lord
of dark hued colour- my Swami- Parama dhaarmeekan (Most Virtuous Lord)-
the Lord who never be comprehended by anyone, (even by Yogis); the Unparalleled
One- "than oppAril appan"-peerless- unmatched- unbounded Lord- but, Sweetest
dear One for His devotees- The
Chief of Nithya sooris- - My Father My PerumAn- is having His Yoga
NithrA at ThiruvevvuL. (an excellent pAsuram!- I give up translating AzhwAr’s
outburst! I am not able to do justice!)
9. (Here AzhwAr declares that Emperumaan gets His greatness because
He is Sri Vallabhan- the Divine Consort of our Most merciful Mother Periya
PiraaTTi- MahAlakshmi) The Goddess- PiraaTTi- who always stays with the
Lord in His Chest- whose tender fingers ache even for holding the flower
ball- who is the Most Beautiful Divine Goddess, born from the most
beautiful Lotus Flower- the One who has settled down on His Chest and
says to the Lord "I will never ever go away from You" ("agalagillEn").
This PerumAn- Sri Vallabhan- the Blue hued Lord- the Chief of Indran (who
himself is the Chief of Devas) - Emperumaan-is having His Yoga NithrA at
ThiruvevvuL. (Please read the pAsuram:
"pandhirukkum mel viralaaL paavai pani malaraaL/
vandhu irukkum maarbhan neela mEni maNi vaNNan/
andharaatthil vaazhum vaanOr naayakanaay amaindha/
indhranukkum thamperumaan evvuL kidandhaanE/
10. Emperumaan of ThiruvevvuL- the One who is praised by His devotees
with the garland of flowers in their hands- and about whom Thirumangai
mannan has sung these pAsurams. He has sung in lovely Tamil words, keeping
Emperumaan’s most auspicious Nithya KalyANa guNAs in his mind. Those who
are able to recite these garland of ten Tamil pAsurams, ARE
CERTAIN TO RULE THIS UNIVERSE. IF THEY DO NOT NEED, THEY WILL RULE
PARAMA PADHAM. "idhu Satthiyam". ("aNdam aaLvadhu aaNai; anREl aaLvadhu
amarar ulagE!")
In previous pAsurams, Thirumangai mannan enjoyed Raman, KaNNan,
the Lord of ThiruvevvuL (the most favourite one of our dear Sri Anand Karalapaakkam),
the SingavEL Piraan, and the Lord of ThiruvEmkatam, after having had a
lovely darshan at Badri, SaaLgraamam and NaimisaaraNyam. Now AzhwAr lands
at Madras! He is here at Triplicane. He immerses himself in the Divine
beauty of ThiruvallikENi Sri Parthasarathy PerumAL, the personification
of all of above Deities... The Lord who blessed us with the Charama slOkam..
Let us take a stroll on the track of AzhwAr's yet another excellent ten!
(What a blessed
group! One side, lovely ThErazhundhoor pAsurams form Sadagopan, other
side description of Sri Rama's exquisite Beauty- Sri Hayagreeva Mahaathmayam
from third direction- Sampath Rengi's starting of second series of inimitable
style of ThiruppAvai, Sri Mani's Vaarthamalai posts - Oh aiyO! idhu enna
Sri Vaishnava Divya SadhassO? What a Kaimkaryam! As Sampath Rengi mentioned,
English and computers have been really blessed by these posts!)
1. The Lord - who had destroyed completely- the big yaagham performed
by Kamsan (with an intent to kill KaNNan), also the performer of Yaagham
i.e. Kamsan; the group of huge mountain like strong wrestlers appointed
by Kamsan for killing KaNNan; the massive elephant Kuvalayaapetam, waiting
at the entrance of Kamsan's place (to kill KaNNan), and the mahout who
had trained the elephant with such ferocity/anger to kill KaNNan- (all
of them were simply destroyed by KaNNan) ; the Lord who
removed the great sorrow and sin of Sivan whose hand got stuck with
a head of Brahma, the One who drove the chariot for Arjunan and helped
PaaNdavaas, the One who faced and got the fierce arrows on His Chest in
the KurukshEthra battle field, the Lord who performed variety of ways and
means to destroy 100 Kauravas (the enemies of PaNdavas) and saved Arjunan;
the Lord who had left the throne and the crown and walked off, smilingly
and willingly to the forest obeying His "Chiitthi KaikEyi's"
(SiRRannai- SiRRavai- Step mother?) order- (AzhwAr says), I have seen
that Greatest Lord here in ThiruvallikkENi.
2. The Lord- who has, as His pampered pet, the Vedas which grant
only good to everyone; the One who grants the fruits to beings as appropriate
based on their Saathvika, Rajasa, thamasa guNAs and based on their performance
of their karmas as per Vedic saasthras; the One who is the limitless enjoyment
and is like the sweetest blemishless fruit to sages like sanaka et al whose
thoughts are always on the Brahmam; the One who is dearest and sweetest
to Sri Nandha Maharaj with His most wonderful
child pranks and mischief; the One who is Jagadh KaaraNan (the Cause
of the Universe), who is worshipped by the people of the world; the One
who captured me and ruled this lowly self- me (who is unlike these people
who always worship Him and pay obeisance to Him)- I have seen that Most
merciful - Greatest Lord here in Triplicane (next to Mylapore where unparalleled
great women folk live in tall big houses).
3. (AzwAr enjoys the darling of NandhagOpan here!). The Lord - who sucked
the life along with the poisonous breast milk of Puthanai, (demon rAkshasi
who had come in the guise of a young woman to breastfeed Kutti KaNNan and
kill Him) and killed her and let her fall dead on the ground; - who is
the life of the world;- who is the yama of asurAs; - who is praised and
worshipped with awe at His wonderful form and attributes by Vidyadharar,
SaaraNar, Chitthar and all Devas et al when He took the
lovely most beautiful Mohini avathaaram to distribute the nectarine
"amudham" to Devas. Such Greatest Lord- I have seen in Triplicane.
4. (Not only did He suck the life of Puthanai; He did tame Indran's
false pride) When the Pooja and Uthsavam, that was usually performed by
Cowherd men every year for Indran, praying him for rains, was stopped
by our Dear Child KaNNan (due to Indran's proud feeling of being worshipped
by Cowherd group, including KaNNan), the irate angry Indran ordered torrential
rains and heavy downpour on this land where KaNNan lived. The poor cowherd
people prayed to KaNNan "Emperumaan KaNNA!
please save us and the cattle from these heavy downpour!". The "little"
Lord of ours, with His little finger, lifted the HUGE, MASSIVE Govardhana
mountain effortlessly and asked all His cowherd folks and cattle to come
underneath to protect them from rains. Such Most Greatest Lord- I have
seen Him at Triplicane.
5. (The Most wonderful Lord is the Master of Sri, BhUmA and NeeLA dEvi!).
the Lord, who is the sweetest Consort of the One who has the lotus flower
as Her Seat- of the One who is also a great companion, sweetest and dearest
to the Lord- of Periya PiraaTTi MahAlakshmi; who is the Chief of the One
who is the personification of Patience- of BhUmi PiraaTTi; the Lord who
was born among the cowherd group and is the Lord of Nappinnai PiraaTTI-
the Support and Companion of everyone; the One
who listened to PaaNdavaas and went as their messenger to inform of
what He had heard from them; the One who is His own support; - Such Greatest
Lord - I have seen at Triplicane. He is my Swami; the Master of my whole
Kulam (Srivaishnava Kulam; Manidha Kulam- Human kind- chEthana kulam)
6. Dhucchaasanan- the younger brother of DhuryOdhanan, the son of the congenitally blind Dhrudharaashtran (blind physically and spiritually), went and told Dhraupathi "You need to serve us, for these pANdavas have lost you in this gambling" and started stripping her; Poor Dhraupathi raised her hands, with tears rolling down, shouted "KaNNA! Sangha chakra GadhApaaNE! Dwarakaanilaya acchuthA! GovindhA! PundareekaashA! Rakshamaam! SaraNAgatham! " and surrendered to the Lord. Then, He immediately saved her from all sorrows; and the way He punished the duryOdhanaadhis by making all the wives of 100 Kauravas become widows; the way He drove Himself as a chariot driver for Arjunan -the Lord is simply GREAT! and wonderful! - Such Greatest Lord- I have seen at Triplicane!
7. The Lord who stands with and is fully enjoyed by Bharathan, his parathanthran,
Chathruknan, ILayaperumAL LakshmaNan for whom Sri Rama is everything and
all in all, SeethA PiraaTTi of MythilA- the Prince of Dasaratha Chakravartthi,
the Yama of rAvaNan- such Greatest Lord, I have seen at Triplicane, where
lovely gardens cool the whole sthalam, where the beautiful peaclocks dance
spreading their feathers gracefully, where the rays of sun do not have
any space to enter (due to the dense trees
and gardens)
8. The father hiraNyan, who listened to Divine name of Narayanan from
the lovely charming "mazhalai" words of Prahalada, when Prahalada came
back after studying at school, did not relish the child's sweet words.
He did not enjoy the Divine name of Narayana. he shouted and became terribly
angry at Prahalada "Where is your Narayanan? is He in this pillar?" and
hit the nearby pillar. Came out the ferocious reddish eyed Lion faced Human
form of Lord Narasinghan with Huge wide red mouth- such
Greatest awesome Beauty- I have seen at Triplicane. (TeLLiya Singha
PerumAL!)
9. (AzhwAr enjoys the Lord's mercy on the elephant, in as much as he
helped and saved Pandavas, Dhraupathi, Mythyli, Prahaladan) The elephant
GajEndran, the Strong animal that loiters and wanders all over the forest
happily, entered into the charming, beautiful pond which is full of red
lotus flowers, for plucking few lovely fresh lotus flowers from the pond
with an intent to place them at the Lotus Feet of Sriman Narayanan. When
it did so, it started yelling and shouting by lifting his trunk above his
head and shouted painfully "AdhimoolamE". (Primordial Chief!) Why?
the crocodile that was living in that pond, caught hold of his leg; the
elephant could not get his wish fulfilled, and hence yelled (not that he
suffered and shouted due to his suffering!
he was a strong elephant and was a paramaikaanthin!) Sriman Narayanan-
who alone is the Primordial Chief (Sivan, Brahma, Indran all of them turned
to only Sriman Narayanan, when they heard the cry "AdhimoolamE!". The word
was for Him; and not for anyone else!) Immed....... (before even I typed
this word), He appeared on GarudA and saved the elephant by sending His
ChakrAyudham to the crocodile and killing the same. (Sri Mukkur Lakshmi
Naraishmachariar says beautifully in his upanyasam "the Lord came in such
a hurry, PiraaTTi with whom He was playing with did not know what was happening
and caught hold of His utthiriyam (the top dress) and was stuck with that
cloth! he came in such a hurry, GarudA came faster to make Him sit in him;
he came in such a hurry that the ChakrAyudham came flying from its respective
place and landed on His right Hand in transit..... He came in such a hurry,
that He did not NEED ANYONE TO HELP HIM; Not even ChakrAyudham! he came
in such a hurry that was like a dear father rushing swiftly to lift his
child that has fallen and is crying! What a lovely narration! What a merciful
Lord!). Such Greatest Most merciful Lord- I have seen at Triplicane!
10. Thirumangai AzhwAr has sung these ten poems about Triplicane- (the neighbourhood of Mylapore) where cool dense gardens are found everywhere; where tall ramparts and huge pillared halls are built; where the ruling (was ) by the king of thoNdai naadu (the present Chennai) was pure and dhaarmic. Those who read these pAsurams on Triplicane (and their meanings) will enjoy being blessed with the eternal permanent stay at Paramapadham.
Emperumaan- who shows Himself always with periya PiraaTTI MahAlaksmhi
at Sri vaishnva sthalams for our enjoyment and removal of our enemies, shows
Himself in the most graceful form at Thiruneermalai, where whatever one
aspires or wishes will get them fulfilled by His grace. It is situated
near Pallavaram (at about 3 km. from Pallavaram) at Madras. This is a lovely
temple.
At the base, Moolavar: NeervaNNan, NeelamugilvaNNan, NinRa ThirukkOlam (Standing posture). Thaayar: Ani maamalar Mangai.
On the mountain top: Moolavar 1:(irundhaan- Sitting posture): Saantha
Narasimhan, facing east; Moolavar 2: (kidandhaan- reclining posture): RanganAthan
(in MaaNickka Sayanam), facing South (Thayaar: RanganAyaki);
Moolavar 3: (Nadandhaan- Walking posture): Trivikraman, facing east.
Prathyaksham: MaarkaNdEyar; Bruhu, ThoNdaimaan;
Theertham: Ksheera PushkariNi, KaaruNya PushkariNi, Siddha PushkariNi, SwarNa pushkariNi (four theerthams);
VisEsham about this sthalam (idheeham): Sage Valmeeki, had been here
and went up the hill top, and paid his obeisance to Ranganathan, Narasimhan
and Trivikraman on the top, and came down. At the base, Valmeeki meditated
on Lord Rama, and immeditaley, RanganAtha PerumAL appeared as Sri Raman,
Thaayar appeared as SitA PiraaTTi, AdhisEshan appeared as
Ilaya perumAL, Sanghu, Chakram appeared as Bharathan and Chathrugnan,
while VishvaksEnar and Garudan appeared as Sugreevan and Hanumaan in front
of the Sage. Vaalmeeki prayed to the Lord and requested Him to be present
there at the base permanently. The Lord stays put as Neer vaNNan in ninRa
thirukkOlam, along with Thaayaar (in a separate sannidhi). When
ThirumangaiAzhwAr came here, there were severe floods and the whole
hill was surrounded by waters (neer) and thus called "neermalai". AzhwAr
waited for six months to pay his obeisance to the Lord of Thiruneermalai.
(Is that why there is a place at Madras called AzhwAr Thirunagari?- I don't
know!) (I have digressed a lot! I am sorry!)
1. "anRu aayar kulak kodiyOdu…. NeermalaiyE" (The Lord who has no mercy for asurAs is here at Thiruneermalai!). The Lord, who, when He had appeared as KaNNan- joined with Nappinnai PiraaTTi, the beautiful creeper of cowherd folks, and with RukmiNi piraaTTi, the incarnate of MahAlakshmi, - the Lord who has absolutely no mercy (or compassion) for asurAs and rAkshasaas at all times, the Lord who shows Himself in the most beautiful archAvathaarams at ThirunaRaiyoor in standing posture, reclines at Thirukkudanthai, walks (measures) at ThirukkOviloor, is here permanently at Thiruneermalai.
2. "kaaNdaavanam enbhadhu Or kaadu….. neermalaiyE" (PerumAl got some things done through Arjunan and also executed some by Himself!). The Lord, who had appeared as KaNNan to destroy the dense forests (KaaNdaavanam, that had belonged to Indran earlier) of asurAs with fire; who had saved the earth and removed its burden in the KurukshEthra battle (by killing the wrong doers). The Lord who had grown huge and ferocious as Lord Narasinghan and tore the large chest of hiraNyan into two with His sharp hand nails and killed him. The Lord who had walked and measured the Universe with His Feet as Trivikraman. Such Greatest Lord is here at Thiruneermalai.
3. "alamannu madal suri sangham edutthu…. neermalaiyE" (the Lord appeared as Krishnan and reduced the huge burden of the earth!). The Lord, who has adorned His most beautiful Divine body, Divine mace, the Conch, the ChakrAudham, appeared in front of DuryOdhanaadhis. The Lord who reduced the huge burden of BhUmi piraaTTi, who always lets Her senses enjoy the presence of the most beautiful ornaments adorning her breasts. How did He reduce her burden? By letting hundreds of asurAs die everyday in the battle field of KurukshEthra and by performing wonderful thing of hiding the Sun with His ChakrA thereby bringing darkness at the unscheduled time. Such Most exquisitely beautiful Lord- is here at Thiruneermalai to save the world.
4. "thaangaadhadhor aaLariyaay… neermalaiyE" (theLLiya singham and Devaki singham is here at Thiruneermalai!). SarvEshwaran, appeared as huge ferocious Lion and killed the Strong hiraNyan and let his dark haired beautiful wives enter into the funeral pyre with him. The Lord, who did the most wonderful things in the huge, not-at-all-easy-to-win battle field: He. The Supreme Parathvam was such a sowlabhyan as KaNNan, stooped down to become a close friend of PaaNdavas and stood as heir chariot driver; He ensured the death of all DuryOdhanaadhis in the great battle filed and saved Dhraupathi. (Since she had vowed for their deaths!) Such Greatest Parathvam- Sowlabhyan stays at Thiruneermalai!
5. "maalum kadalaara malaikkuvadittu… neermalaiyE" (the rAvaNaanthakan-
Sri Raman is here at Thiruneermalai!). When rAvaNan was so strong and was
having an unbeaten record, what our Emperumaan Sri Raman did: He placed
the huge mountains on the noisy deep ocean waves and built a bridge across
the vast sea to cross to LankA. He destroyed the beautiful
tall towers of lankA, that appeared as if they touch the cool moon
even, by showering arrows in the battle and shatter the whole area with
His thunderous twangs of the bow and array of arrows . He aimed the BrahmAsthram
and finished the life of rAvaNan and made the lustrous shining ten crowns
of rAvaNan fall onto the ground. Thus the Most victorious Lord of AyOdhyA
- the Dark cloud hued Lord- -Sarva Swami is here at Thiruneermalai.
6. ""paaraar ulaghum panimaal varaiyum.. neermalaiyE" -SarvEshawaran
appeared as ParasurAman and killed victoriously Kaarthaveeryarjunan). During
the cosmic cycle (praLaya kaalam), Emperumaan had consumed and retained
in His stomach the huge mountains, the deep, vast oceans, the massive universe,
the Big Sun and the cool moon - and still He had much
more space and was not full!- That Most wonderful Swami- My Perumaan
did this: He became angry with the storng, cruel KaarthaveeryArjunan and
other kings and killed them during His ParasurAma munivar avathaaram. He
stands as the symbol of His Parathvam and as the declaration of the final
statement that He alone is the Chief of all; There is none equal to Him
even, why to talk of superior? Such Greatest Lord- NeervaNNan- the Lord
who is of the colour of blue waters- the Lord who has His Yoga NithrA on
the Oceans - Narayanan- is here standing at Neermalai, lovingly for His
devotees.
7. "pugaraar uruvaagi… neermalaiyE.."HiraNyan, who was of shining body
(due to his strength and royal connection), yelled, "Who is superior to
me? None!" and became angry with his son. The ferocious Huge beauty roared
from the pillar as Narasingha moorthy and finished hiraNyan's life. He
destroyed hiraNyan's so-called fame and popularity that had existed. HiraNyan
antagonised the Lord by shouting angrily at his son Prahalada (when Prahalada
the ardent devotee of Sriman Narayana, uttered
the Divine names of Narayanan) with great false ego and pride; hiraNyan
didn't surrender at the Lord's Feet. Such most ferocious PerumAL is here
at Thiruneermalai, sitting.
8. Picchacch chiRupeeli piditthu… neermalaiyE.."-SamaNar (Jains) walk
down the streets naked (for avoiding any possible contact with insects
and killing them) holding a small peacock feather in their hands swinging
softly at their bodies; brazen, shameless ones, who walk stark naked like
the ghost-like shameless women, who eat even the corpses! (They are supposed
to be following ahimsA! They don't even shave their heads or cut their
hairs; they pluck the hairs one by one, causing tremendous himsA to the
jIvan- and calling themselves as performing ahimsA! ). Hence, hate such
actions of these people. Go and offer most
fragrant flowers at the Lotus Feet of PerumAL, praying to Him "Please
do not let yama dhuuthAs dare come near us; Please show mercy on us" and
pay obeisance to Him devotedly and movingly. He WILL SHOW MERCY ON YOU.
This Most Compassionate Lord is here at Thiruneermalai.
9. "pEsuma navanRithuvammin namar…neermalaiyE" It is not at all
appropriate for us to talk of Emperumaan's Glory and Greatness. (We are
not qualified!). Oh my dear people of Srivaishnava kulam! ("namar") Come
to the front and talk so that those atheists can hear the greatness of
our PerumAL. Our Lord immediately alleviates the sorrows and destroys the
sins of all devotees who cling to Him. For those, who are caught in the
afflictions of five senses, and are stuck there immersing themselves
in the enjoyment of those sensual pleasures, Neermalai Lord is inaccessible.
This Thiruneermalai is so beautiful, full of fertility,
with bees humming on the most fragrant, honey dripping flowers.
10. "nedumaal avan mEviya neermalai mEl … mannavaraay adikoodiduvarE."-
These ten pAsurams are on the Sarvaadhikaaran- SarvEshwaran - Lord of Thiruneermalai.
The singer is the Chielf of Thirumangai nagar- the great warrior like a
huge male elephant, Kaliyan- Thirumangai AzhwAr. Those who read these ten
pAsurams, will have their sins run away IMMEDIATELY
FROM THEM; They will get the taste of heaven very easily; they will
be the rulers of this vast earth, and then be granted the eternal servitude
at the Lotus Feet of Sriman Narayanan.
In Periya Thirumozhi 2.5, ThirumangaiAzhwAr proceeds to enjoy the
greatness of Thirrukadanmallai Divya dEsam and advises us that He alone
is the upaayam; and except for Him, all others will lead us astray and
keep us deeply suffering in samsaaric afflictions. He alone is capable
of removing and destroying our enemies. Pay obeisance to such Greatest
Lord of Thirukkadanlmallai and be saved!
This Thirukkadanmallai sthalam is none other than Mahabhalipuram. (40 miles from Madras and 7 miles from Thiruvidavendhai).
Moolavar: Sthalasayana PerumAL. Sayana ThirukkOlam (in reclining posture). Facing East. The right hand is kept on His chest showing jnAna mudrA, saying "PigaiAzhwAr's jnAna thamizh purindha naan".
Uthsvar: SthlasayanatthuRaivaar (Standing posture to save the world- ulaguyya ninRaan); Thaayaar: Nila mangai thaayaar; (Separate sannidhi); theertham: PuNdareeka PudhakariNi; Garuda Nadhi; Prathyaksham to PuNdareeka Maharishi.
VishEsham of this sthalam:
BhUthatthAzhwAr avataata sthalam. PuNdareeka Maharishi, once, desired
to perform his archanai to KsheerAbhinAthan
(may be mentally) and was gathering Lotus flowers. When he was proceeding
towards east, there was this Ocean (Bay of Bengal) on the way. He, due
to his extreme devotion) started emptying the ocean waters using his hands.
The Lord, appeared as an old brahmin, in front of the Rishi and asked for
food. When Rishi went back to bring food, Emperumaan lied down on
the floor (as if He lies down on AdhisEshan at ThiruppaaRkadal) gracefully
adoring the flowers brought by the rishi. At His Feet, stands PuNdareeka
Maharishi. (This temple is supposed to have belonged to PiLLailOkAchArya)
1. The Lord- My Emperumaan- who had swallowed the vast universe and brought out later, who is so pleasing to the eyes like the Red Coral, who is like a pillar for us to hold Him firm and tight, who is so sweet like the nectar (amirdham), who reclines so beautifully on the Ocean where pearls and Sapphires are abundant, who is the Strongest one to have torn apart the Kesi asuran, who is my Master, who is like the Sugar cane to His devotees, who broke the tusk of kuvalayaapeetam elephant, who is like the Lion in a battle field, who crawled in front of two marudha trees, who has got the most Beautiful mot Divine ThirumEni (Body), who removed the sorrow of dark, beautiful GajEndran, who showed Himself (as the Primordial Chief to the world, in the process)- Such Greatest Lord- I have seen Him at Thirukadalmallai (or Kadanmallai).
2. Don't waste your time reading all your life and learning all those
ramble from others who are lowly selves (and are NOT the devotees of Sriman
Narayanan) thinking that those words are the ultimate truths and working
as their servants. To get saved, come here. Pay obeisance to my Emperumaan
to whom I pay my obeisance. He is worshipped as "the Father" by the likes
of me (other Bhagawathas). He is worshipped and praised by learned ones.
He is immeasurable. He is my Swami. He has got the Pearl
like ThirumEni and is standing at ThiruninRavoor sthalam. He is the
One who destroyed the KaaNdaavanam, with fire. I have seen Him at Thirukkadalmallai.
3. (Here AzhwAr brings Empermaan's Parathvam and His greatness to the attention of ALL THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW OR REALISE THAT.) "udamburuvil moonRu enRaay moorthi vERaay ulaguyya ninRaanai …. " Sarveshwaran is the One who stands at the antharAthmA of Sivan and Brahma and in order to protect the world He became three (Trinity- VishNu, Sivan and Brahma) by Himself becoming VishNu and executing His will as the antharyaami of BrahmA and Sivan, while He is not bounded by them and their actions. He is the Most wonderful One to have sucked the life of Puthanai rAkshasi by sucking her poisonous breast milk. He is the One who took such a Sowlabhya avthaar of cowherd boy Kutti KaNNan for chasing the cattle and calves. He is SUCH A SOWABHYAN AND SO MERCIFUL to let the calves learn to drink water by His own enactment by entering into the ponds on the way and shows by His hands to drink water. (Ahaaaa… What an imagination! What a description by AzhwAr! Enna sowlabhyam!) He is the One who stands at the temple of Thanjavur (?) as the Only means for reaching Him. He is the One who (is going to ) wander on the Horse (as Kalki avataar) to save and protect the world. I have seen such Greatest lord at Thirukkadalmallai.
4. pEy thaayai mulai uNda piLLai thannai… The little infant boy who
had expressed desire to suck the demonic Puthanai's breast milk. The mischievous
warrior Lord, who had played with the tusks of dark huge elephant. The
Lord who lived eating butter and curd from the darting deer eyed YasOdhA.
The Lord who is sweetest nectar to Brahmins (His devotees) (If He
is not sweet to Brahmins, then he is not a brahmin. I am not saying AzhwAr
says." AndhaNartham amudhatthai..) The One who joined with the cowherd
women folks; the One danced with the pot; the One who lifted the huge mountain
to protect the cattle form their
sorrows due to torrential downpour! My Swami- I have seen Him at Thirukadalmallai.
5. The Lord- who had kicked the wheel -sakataasuran and simply destroyed him, with His cute little Red Lotus Feet; the One enjoyed Himself lying down on the little Banyan leaf as small baby; the One who has got the huge large broad four strong shoulders like the mountains of lustrous pearls or emerald stones; the One who is Swami to all; who hugged the Beautiful shoulders of BhUmi piraaTTi; The One made the wrestlers (appointed by duryOdhanan to let KaNNan fall from the illusory seat (poyyasanam)) get finished off when He had gone to duryOdhanan's sabha (parliament) as a messenger for paaNdavaas. I have seen such Greatest Lord - my Swami at Thirukkadalmallai. (emmaanaik kaNdu koNdEn thalasayanatthE..")
6. The Lord, who is having his Yoga nithrA on AdhisEshan at ThiruppaaRkadal
(Milky Ocean); Ramapiraan, who ran behind the lovely deer, that had
beautiful golden spots on its body all over its body, which was so fondly
sought and asked for by SitA PiraaTTi; KaNNa piraan, who plucked the tusk
of strong elephant kuvalayaapeetam; Varaaha mUrthy, who had brought the
Mother earth back on His horn; Thirivikraman whose Feet became just too
Big for measuring the whole Universe and the vast
Space; He grew so Big as Thirvikraman; I have seen such Greatest lord
at Thirukkadalmallai.
7. The Lord who crushed the asurAs of rAvaNan (who were ignorant of
SarvEshwaran's capabilities), with His strong shoulders (by His fighting
in the battle); the Great warrior, who tore the chest of hiraNyan; the
Garudavaahanan, who reclines on Adhiseshan at the wavy ThiruppARkadal;
the One who sucked the poisonous breast milk of rAkshasi Puthanai as if
it is the tastiest amudham (nectar); the One who stays in the heart
willingly and lovingly of those who are pained at heart to hear such horror
incident that has happened to our Kutti KaNNan! (pollaadha rAkshasi naasamaappOga;
kuzhandhaiyai vandhu kolluvaaLO orutthi? Manasudhaan varumO?- then He is
there to stay!) I- WHO HAD BEEN SEARCHING FOR SUCH GREATEST EMPERUMAAN
- have seen Him at Thirukkadalmallai.
8. (AzhwAr enjoys Bhagawaan's greatness and merciful nature to take
even the form of that which does NOT suit His Purushathvam by taking Mohini
avathaaram for the sake of His BhakthAs - Devas in this case) PerumAn-
the One who took the Mohini avtaar as a lady to deceive the asurAs and
prevent them from eating the amudham; Such deceitful Lord- is the One
who grew so huge and ferocious as Narasinghan and appeared from the
pillar with the shining crescent like white sharp teeth; the One who reclines
at Thirumaayyam on the top of AnanthaaAzhwAn; the One who has got infinite
unbounded limitless most auspicious attributes (kalyANa guNAs); the One
who has long, dark, beautiful, darting, large, ruddy lined red Lotus like
lovely eyes; (adadaaaa… I wish I had been villi daasar to enjoy those eyes
of Sri Ranganatha as shown By YathirAjar) . I have seen Him to my complete
satisfaction of my eyes - at Thirukkadalmallai. (kaNNaarak kaNdukoNdEn
thalasyanatthE..)
9. This EmperumAn has got the lovely two Lotus Feet, most fit to be
worshipped, praised and served by His devotees / servants. This Lord is
the One who let the body of that strongest- unbeaten great King rAvaNan,
(who did not think "Let me be saved by serving The Lotus Feet of Emperumaan
who measured the whole Universe in His two steps, as Trivikraman") be eaten
by animals and eagles; The Lord- who can be seen and realised by
six a~ngas with AchArya upadEsam, by the four permanent
Vedas and five yaghams is seen by this lowly self- His servant at Thirukkadalmallai.
10. These ten pAsurams of Kaliyan - Thirumangai AzhwAr with rhythm and
set to tune, are on: SarvEshwaran- who sleeps on AnanthAzhwAn; who angered
at, and caused the death of, asura chief hiraNyan; the little KaNNan, who
crawled between the two marudha trees and made them fall down; the Beautiful
Lord - Red Lotus Eyed Lord- Rajeeva lOchanan- Aravidha lOchanan- SenthaamaraikkaNNan-
Lord of Thirukkadalmallai who sleeps on the earth. Those who read these
ten pAsurams (and/or these
meanings) will have ALL THEIR SORROWS AND KARMIC DISEASES removed down
to the roots.
ThirumangaiAzhwAr's desire to see the Lord keeps on increasing and
here he gets into the nAyikAbhAvam. AzhwAr (Parakala nAyaki's)'s mother
requests the Lord for His mercy on her darling daughter.
1. Oh my Lord of Thiruvidaventhai! My darling daughter's love for your is intense and deep. The One, who has the most Beautiful bright, shining golden, moon like face, who is in her youthful form always, who was born from the huge (milky) ocean and who is more sweeter than the nectar (which also came out from the same ocean), who always resides in the most beautiful Chest of Yours, - Periya PiraaTTi- knowing fully well of Her existence and presence for ever with You, my daughter, still is crazy and desirous of You. This girl has got the lovely, cool, flower like darting eyes and is like a kolli mountain doll (or mannequin?- pradhimai). What is Your plan for my innocent darling daughter? Please tell me a word.
2. This girl, whose smile is so charming like that of the seed of "maadhuLai" fruit, never even smiles in the presence of her friends. She never applies any sandal paste on her tender breasts; she does not write any collyrium (Kaajal- "mai") on her large beautiful fresh flower like eyes with the tip of the peacock feather; she does not place any fragrant flower on her long dark black hair; She keeps uttering "Oh Huge Lord! The One who measured the whole earth surrounded by the oceans!". What is Your plan, Oh Lord of Thiruvidavendhai, for this girl, who is mad, love sick and talks all these words with love for You?
3. Even though she wears the pearl necklace, applies sandal paste on her large breasts, still they all give her only more thaapam (viraham) for her she hates them. The cool, moon rays - she claims, are burning her. When the waves of the ocean make loud noises, she yells "aiyO!" (thinking of You on the milky Ocean); Her tender youthful body has now become golden colour due to all these sufferings. She looks so sweet and charming to me wearing those ornaments; What are You going to do for her, Lord of Thiruvidavendhai?
4. At nights, she laments that it is so long and each second passes off like a yugham; She says: "The Sun has disappeared; The Oceans are roaring; they don't sleep in the dark nights; the breeze at night burns my body like fire; Oh friend! Please help me" She suffers from severe languishing; She strokes her breasts with great viraha thaapam and she asks as to what she needs to overcome her suffering. What are you planning to do on this golden girl of mine, oh Lord of Thiruvidavendhai?
5. Oh lord of Thiruvidavendhai! When she talks she utters only Your name; She literally melts talking about You and thinking about Your Most Beautiful Divine Diyya ma~ngaLa ThirumEni azhagu (Body); Her love for You keeps on increasing exponentially; Her beautiful eyes have forgotten the sleep; After being blessed with this girl, what have I seen her in my life: only this suffering of hers. She is very clear about You. In front of all those people who do not like her nature (and pass comments), what is Your plan for this beautiful girl with thin waistline?
6. She does not think in line with her heritage (kulam); she is in love and always enjoys listening to the valour of the Lord who had destroyed rAvaNan of lankA surrounded by deep, vast oceans and the strong asurAs there; Again, she faints while hearing the same. What is you plan, Oh Lord of Thiruvidavendhai for my lovely girl, who has got the waist like the lighting, the broad hip and tender breasts that have become pale due to pasalai disease (pasalai disease comes to the beloved, suffering from the pangs of separation when the lover leaves her)?
7. Oh Idavendhai PiraanE! This girl, since, she always keeps thinking of You only, she smiles herself and enjoys with her own thoughts; She talks of joining You only; She does not seem to have any love for me, who had performed great penance to have her as my daughter. She talks incoherently and babbles, saying, Oh Lord of ThirumaalirunjOlai! This little young girl of mine- who has got that charming smile on her face always, who has been suffering from mental agony- what are You planning to do on her?
8. My girl always says "My heart melts at the lovely, divine music from the flute held by the cowherd boy KaNNan, the One who holds the plough in His Strong Hands"; She also sings in praise of only Thirupputkuzhi Sri Vijayaraghavan. She says "Let us go to TirumalA"; She looks so cute like the doll of Kolli malai. She appear like beautiful creeper; She has got a narrow waist; Her large beautiful dark eyes always shed tears rolling down the smooth cheeks, like the stream of water flow; She has got lovely slender bamboo like shoulders; Oh Lord of Thiruvidavendhai! What is Your plan for her?
9. This girl's slim shoulders are getting pale; The lovely charming eyes of hers have forgotten their sleep; Due to her great love for You, her desire for You aggravates; This girl- the personification of beauty- is suffering from an unknown disease and is thinning down; I don't know the disease. Her waist line has further narrowed down. What is going to be the end for this beautiful girl? Oh thiruvidavendhai PiraanE! What do You think for her in Your ThiruvuLLam? Please tell me.
10. The Lord, who shows Himself at Thiruvidavendhai and showers His
mercy on His Bhagawathas who pay their obeisance to Him saying, "Oh Accharya
bhUthanE! The One who took the forms of Hamsam (Swan), Fish (Mathsyam),
Tortoise (Koormam), Lion (Narasimham), et al! Please shower Your mercy
on me", is praised in this ten pAsurams by AzhwAr. He is the Chief of Thirumangai.
He has sharp spear in his hand. Kaliyan is his name. Those who recite these
pAsurams of his, with devotion everyday, will have all their sins and karmic
diseases plucked out from their roots and live blissfully.
1. Sivan who burnt the thripuram, Brahman who was born from Lotus flower, were all awe struck with excitement and fear and the all- everyone in all three worlds fell at the feet, when the Huge Lord Narasingan with ferocious beauty and thunderous roars, with tremendous wrath on His face, tore the chest of hiraNyan's chest with His sharp, vociferous loud noises from His large mouth showing the white teeth, shaking the mane. When He appeared so, I asked Him "Who are You?". he said "I am Thiruattabhuyakaratthaan". (The Lord of Attabhuyakaram) (This Lord has got eight Hands and Swami Desikan has sung eight verses on this PerumAL, called "AshtabhujAshtakam". It is told that those who need IMMEDIATE GRACE from the Lord, they can pay obeisance to this Lord He will appear in His Hands and save them)
2. The One, to whom Brahma and other devas come to Him and recite Vedas and pay obeisance; who has got the Divine ThirumEni so graceful and beautiful as that of Valorous Lord Rama, who stand so majestically and gracefully like the Lord of ThiruvEmkatam, the One who stands as a Brahmin bachelor (Brahmachari) boy, when He asked for three measures of earth from mahAbhali, when mahAbhali performed yaagham, and measured the whole Universe is Vaamanan. I asked Him as to who He is, standing as a small bramachari boy. He said "I am Thiruvattabhuyakaratthaan".
3. The One who has in His Right Hands, the arrows, the Bow, the Swaord, the Conch, and the ChakrA, Discuss (kEdayam), the Flowers etc in His Left Hands, (4 left and 4 right), and appeared in such Graceful form; the One who broke the strong tusk of the kuvalayaapetam elephant angrily as KaNNan and who looks like the rain laden dark huge clouds. I asked Him, "Who are You standing in such most Graceful form?". He said "I am Thiruvattabhuyakaratthaan".
4. Is this Lord KaNNan, who simply and effortlessly lifted with His little finger the huge mountain of Govardhanam, and stopped the torrential rains devastating the cattle? I don't know His such wonderful action that He performed. He looks like the Most Brightest Lord of Paramapadham, who stays at Sri vaikuntam permanently at all times. He has the ChakrA and the Conch in His Hands; I asked Him who are You? He said "I am Thiruvattabhuyakaratthaan".
5. The One who blessed us gracefully and mercifully the Veda saasthrAs, the Ithihaasaas, the Kalpa soothrAs, the Meemaamsam, the vyAkharaNam, et al and the worlds attained by those who learn and follow the above works; - the One who has Strongest shoulders like mEru mountains, who has Sri Kausthubham and PeriyA PiraaTTI (seated on Lotus flower) on His Chest, whose colour is like the dark blue ocean, who is the sEshi (Master) for EVERYONE and EVRYTHING- I asked Him "Who are You?". He said "I am Thiruvattabhuyakaratthaan"
6. (AzhwAr switches to "her" languishing) Even when trying to comprehend His deeds, I am not able to. This poor lady's ornaments, the bangles, her mind, her "nANam" (feminine shyness) have all been snatched by Him as if they belong to Him. The wavy, noisy, dark Ocean, the green leaves, the tree, the kayaampoo, the karuneydhal flower ( a kind of dark blue flower) in addition to all of them, the group of dark black clouds, - He is the conglomeration of all these colours. I asked Him, "So graceful and beautiful- Who are You in such Divine Beauty?" He said "I am Thiruvattabhuyakaratthaan"
7. The way His Thirutthuzhaay maalai (garland of thuLasi) dripping Honey, and bees drinking the honey and humming there, adorns His Chest, the grace and gorgeous Beauty of His ThirumEni, the decoration on the Chest with fragrant sandal paste on His large Chest, - How can I explain His Beauty! Those lovely large dark eyes which are like the Lotus flowers that have been painted by the artists; That broad chest, so bright and lustrous; those strong hug shoulders, that curvy bimbha fruit like mouth- "Who are You so Beautiful and gorgeous - so Divinely graceful?". He said "I am Thiruvattabhuyakaratthaan"
8. He is praised and worshipped by Nithyasooris at all times in all directions, reciting Veda manthras. The Periya PiraaTTi- mahAmalskhmi, born out of ThiruppaaRkadal is His Queen; The Divine Conch is in His left. The ChakrA is in His right. When trying to compare His colour, it looks like the karuneydhal flower, or like the dark blue ocean; His those two eyes, and His Form- One can SIMPLY NOT measure the Beauty of Them. They are so BEAUTIFUL. He is more than my "uyir"(life) even; Such Greatest Exquisite Beauty! Who is He? He said "I am Thiruvattabhuyakaratthaan"
9. My bangles - it appears belong to Him only and are simply falling off; Coming to think of it further, even my heart appears to be His. This narrow creeper like waist gets weaker and weaker when He comes near and nearer to whisper something in my ears opening His red coral mouth. What He told me as a secret (rahasyam) is Parama rahasyam. The way He looks at me is even more torturing to me. It simply torments me and leaves me longing for Him more. His looks are killing. I am scared. I don't know who is He. When I asked Him "who are You?". He said "I am Thiruvattabhuyakaratthaan" (What a narration by Parakala Nayaki!)
10. This pAsuram is about Thiruvattabhuyakaratthaan, who is sarva kaaraNan, who shows Himself so gracefully at Attabhuyakaram, in Kanchi; He is worshipped by VayiramEgan- the King of thoNdai state; He is SarvEshawarn; This pAsuram is composed by Kaliyan- ThirumangaiAzhwAr. to be avataar of VishNu's dWAra Palakas) as Pallavan and Villavan; The
sons became ardent devotees of VishNu and performed asvamEdha yaagham by
the side of PuNyakOdi Vimaanam. Sriman Narayanan appeared as VaikunTa nAthan
in sitting posture and blessed them; VrajA nadhI has been reported to be

large halls, and was ruled once by the great king Pallavan, who had chased
his enemies away in the battle fields. (AzhwAr himself was the king before;
that could be the reason for his great admiration of this devotee-cum-king
Pallavan!)
5. The long, big trunk, and the stout strong legs - GajEndra elephant had. His sorrows and suffering was removed by mperumaan, who also had simply dived into the pond and scared the poisonous huge Kaaliyan snake there! 9. That day, for the beautiful crescent moon like foreheaded Nappinnai
piraaTTi, KaNNan, conquered the vociferous thunderous
voiced, strong seven oxen, effortlessly and killed them. Such greatest

by beautiful cool ponds of waters. The king Pallavan, who kills the enemy
kings (who have the sharp blood stained sword in their hands), and who
pays his obeisance to the Lord of this sthalam- Sri VaikuNta nAthan.
10. This sthalam of ParamEswara viNNagarm, (which is ruled by the devoted Pallava king, who paid his obeisance to the Lord Sri VaikuNta nAthan of this sthalam) was described in this ten. Those who read these ten pAsurams that narrate Lord of the most auspicious attributes and of the Most Beautiful form, (with the understanding of their meanings) will obtain the grace (kattaksham) of Periya PiraaTTi - MahAlakshmi and rule the earth as great kings.

5. Right from Karan, (the one who has the blood stained spear), Kabhanthan, Vaali, et al were simply killed by just one arrow from Him; the armies of asurAs (of curved crescent moon like teeth), who have their swords in their hands were effortlessly destroyed by the Lord Rama along with their chief rAvaNan too!Due to Veda gOsham, their (Srivaishnavas) glory keeps on getting greater! At the halls, and inns, these brahmins repeat Vedic recitations (what they had learnt). The ponds are filled with most flagrant breezy winds. In such beautiful ThiruukkOviloor, I saw this Lord (who had appeared as Rama!)
6. The Lord who had swiftly stolen the just made butter; the Kutti KaNNan- whose smile can be seen even in the dense dark night- such white lustrous teeth!
