Dear bhagavathas,
Sri.Madhavakannan of Singapore is doing a great kaimkaryam of translating the divya prabandham in a simple English providing the basic meaning of the pasurams. His write ups are concise yet filled with great anubavams. His translations are strictly as per our sampradayam and adiyen has benefitted a lot from his wonderful translations. So far he has completed Thiruvaymozhi and Peria Thirumozhi and few thiruvandhadhis. adiyen is sure that he will continue to enlighten us with the balance prabandhams in the coming days.
Sri.Madhavakannan used to present meanings for every ten pasurams in one posting. Most of you aware that all such postings are being archeived in Sri.Mani's Srivaishnavam page and also in bhakti list egroups site. But since the postings are scattered spanning over a period of two years it may be bit difficult to browse and read them. adiyen is attempting to compile them for the benefit of bhagavathas who can read the entire Peria thirumozhi in say 11 documents.Hope this will be of use to you.
Now over to Sri.Madhavakannan and adiyen won't interfere with him and Thirumangai azhvar, hereafter.
Dasan venkat
Sri:
Dearest Sisters and Brothers, Happy makara sankaranthi! Happy Pongal!
I pray to Divya Damapthis for Their blessings and AchAryAs and ThirumangaiAzhwAr for Their anugraham for my yet another rash, brazen attempt to enter into tranlsation kaimkaryam. Please forgive me for my errors and mistakes. Anything good in it, I am not to be "blamed"; All Emperumaan's grace and AzhwAr's and AchAryan anugraham. All mistakes, blunders are mine; Please pat (slap) my back for that.
ThirumangaiAzhwAr's Periya Thirumozhi is what we are going to enjoy next. All of you know well about this Great AzhwAr, and he needs no introduction. However, for novices like me, just a quick account of his biography:
In his early days, as a king, our Lord Narayana was far from AzhwAr's
thoughts. His spiritual journey started with a commitment he made
to his sweetheart Kumudhavalli in exchange for her hand in marriage.
While most women may have asked for her suitor's everlasting love, or a
diamond ring, or a golden bangle, all our gentle lady Kumudhavalli sought
from AzhwAr was that he must wear the marks of Sri Vaishnava and serve
food (amudhu) for 1,000 Vaishnavaas everyday for a period of one
year. This service, initiated as a price for carnal pleasure,
turned into a labour of divine love towards the devotees of our Lord Narayana.
Years rolled by. AzhwAr spent all his wealth in the service of Vaishnavas.
With his coffers empty, AzhwAr could not continue the service. He
could not bear the thought of having to turn away the Vasihnavas who by
then were accustomed to blessing his abode with their presence.
The feeling of despair turned to anger at the sight of the greedy idle rich strolling around with all their gaudy and ostentatious jewels and showing contempt for the simple and devout Vasihnavas. This was enough to drive our Great AzhwAr to actions. But it was not just fame that was in store for our AzhwAr.
Our Lord Sriya: Pathih Sriman Narayana decided to intervene and turn AzhwAr away from the ways of the sword. He and His consort, our divine mother Sri, appeared before him as a newly wed couple bedecked with priceless ornaments. AzhwAr, who hid himself at ThirumaNankollai, stopped the couple and forcibly relieved them of all the jewellery.
But, there was one piece on our Lord's toe that wouldn't come off however
much AzhwAr tried. In frustration AzhwAr
put his head on the lotus feet of our Lord (!) with the intention of
biting the ring off. He asked the Lord as to what is the magic manthra
for removing? (The Lord must have mis understood that AzhwAr enquires regarding
samsaara bond!) and that sort of SaraNagathy did work! at that moment AzhwAr
was drawn in by the beauty of the lotus feet and realized
the true nature of the couple standing in front of him. The Lord
then instructed the esoteric meaning of the "magic manthra" i.e
"Thirumandhiram" or Ashtaaksharam for the Most Blessed AzhwAr, to get
initiated by the Lord Himself, with Their "thadutthaaTkoLLal".
Thus AzhwAr learnt of the efficacy of the divine name "Narayana" from our Lord Narayana Himself!
He immediately burst out to sing the poem "Periya Thirumozhi" (Great divine poem) consisting of 1,084 verses. The first ten of these verses are dedicated to the name "Narayana." These first 10 emotional verses give aid and comfort to people.
AzhwAr comes down hard on himself with intense self criticism for the
violence he had caused, though for a good cause, for having sought fleeting
worldly pleasures, for having squandered his days on mundane pursuits.
He ends each of
these ten verses with a celebration of the divine name Narayana, for
after finding this sweet name, AzhwAr declares, he was free from all the
sins and assured of the everlasting bliss at the lotus feet of our sweet
Lord Narayana (Biography passage -stole- from Sri Dileepan's
post in Dec 95- in bhakti list - Thanks, Dileepan!)
His compositions were :
1. Periya thirumozhi
2. Periya thirumadal
3. SiRiya thirumadal
4. Thiru nedunthANdakam (TNT)
5. Thiru KurunthANdakam(TKT)
6.Thiru vezhuk kurrirukkai.
His pAsurams are marvellous; excellent and have unsurpassed beauty in them. ParAsara Bhattar made use of his TNT to win over his counter part, an advaitin scholar in his arguments and later the advaitin became his disciple 'nam jeeyar'.
Sri RanganAtha himself heard and was greatly pleased with that argument re-enacted from Bhattar quoting from TNT (Please read excellent posts of Sri V. SadagOpan on TNT and TKT duringFeb 96 from Bhakti Archives - a real feast to each one of you).
Thirumangai AzhwAr (a KING, a person who had all kingly royal comforts) walked all the way and VISITED almost all temples. He is simply GREAT, my dearest brothers and sisters. He is JUST S U P E R B AzhwAr. His wordings are his outpourings straight from his heart.
It is told and declared by Tamil Poets of all kinds that His paasurams contain ezhutthu (writing), sol,(words) poruL, (meanings), yaappu (Grammar), aNi (figure of sppech?) etc.. His songs are so great and so nice to recite! It is simple and quite lucid too for reciters and those who know even little Tamil, can understand the lovely emotional outbursts of AzhwAr and his bhakti.
His paasurams depict mainly the archaavathaarams of Divya dEsams, and when He enjoys Them with the descrition of Divya Desams, they simply immerse us in unbounded limitless bliss and pErAnandham.
Thai AzhwAr, when Kumudavalli had asked him to become a Srivaishnava, got his pancha samskaaram done by ThirunaRaiyoor Nambhi. He got his Thiru ManthrOpadEsam from Sri SowrirAja PerumAL; AzhwAr praises These Lords individually with 100 pAsurams! Nambhi naamam sollil NamO NaaraayaNamE".
This AzhwAr had Great regards for NammAzhwAr. He appealed and requested Sri Ranganathan for lsitening to Thiruvaaymozhi from Kaarthigai sukla Ekadasi and now all Sri vaishnava Divya Desams celebrate this uthasavam of reciting Thiruvaaymozhi.
The essence of Periya Thirumozhi is: The worldly life is sorrowful;
It can be cured only by the grace of Sriman Narayanan; Hence, get saved
by paying obeisance to Him at His Divya Desams (106 Thiruppathis on this
Earth). AzhwAr visited almost about 80 Thiruppathis, all on foot; He sang
1253 passurams, next only to NammAzhwAr; (but NammAzhwAr never went
to any Divya Desams; The Lords came to Him!)… Thirumangai AzhwAr padi
padi paraparappaay Thirndhaar…He declares: If one surrenders to Sriman
Narayanan, "enRum vinaiyaagina saaragilaavE"… (Never will sins accrue to
your account!)..
This prabhandham should be read, re-read, re-re read and enjoyed! So
nice are they… Last Kaarthigai Kritthigai nakshathram (during AzhwAr Thirunakshathram)
as instructed by our KaNNan Swami, I could recite Periya Thirumozhi for
ten days preceding his Thirunakshathram and completed on his birthday.
It was a great feeling of having read his lovely Periya Thirumozhi. Dearest
Sisters and Brothers, my attempting to write these translation is: 1. Those
who do not know Tamil, can get to know the meanings, and enjoy. 2. Those
who wish to know the meanings (though we all know Tamil, it is still difficult
to understand the
meanings) and 3. Being a self-centred person, I myself would like to
enjoy them, by reading the pAsurams and writing these translations.
May I request for all your aseervaathams and wishes for such a rash attempt? (Fools rush in where angels fear to tread).
Thirumangai AzhwAr ThiruvadigaLE SaraNam
"thunjum bOdhu azhaimin.. thuyar varil ninaimin… thuyarileer sollinum nanRaam… (While you sleep, call… or when you feel depressed and sorrowful… call… or no worries.. no problems.. stilll it is so sweet to utter…. Call "Narayana Narayana" says "Thirumangai AzhwAr)
Emperumaan consoles the AzhwAr saying "For you alone, I show Myself
at Divya
Desams!". AzhwAr gets excited and requests for removal of further births...

10. Oh BhakthAs! Sing these ten thamizh pAsurams of Kaliyan, the one
who
serves eternally to ThirunaRaiyoor NambhI. By singing them and dancing
with
joy, there will be no sorrow for you. Also you will get Sri VaikuNtam
(mOksham)
AzhwAr in the last ten said “naanE yeydhap peRREn”. Means: I myself
(was
blessed to have) got Him”.. How? Here in this ten, he explains how.
1. The Lord, Emperumaan, who shows Himself so gracefully at ThirunaRaiyoor,
the incomprehensible Lord even by the clear minded thapasvis- jnAnis;
the
One who aimed the arrow through seven staggered trees, as Rama; the
One who
always thinks good of His devotees; the One who is thought of by the
scholars and Bhagawathas and praising Him as “the One who has the Divine
Bow, angered on the asurAs and fought and killed them with fiery eyes!”-
such greatest Emperumaan is contemplated and enjoyed in adiyEn’s mind
always. Today- I am blessed to have seen Him and enjoyed His divine
Beauty
with both of my eyes. When my eyes drank Him and enjoyed, I too enjoyed.
(AzhwAr says: “kaNNiNaigaL kaLippak kaLitthEnE”..- adadaa! )
2. This Emperumaan- the One who had swallowed the whole universe and
brought
it out through His mouth once; the One who is the bhandhu (not due
to the
birth, even before), naturally; Parama kruppaLu, the Most merciful
dayAkaran, Sarvagnan, but still thinking of this illiterate, ajjnAni,
to
save adiyEn, by blessing me to think of Him at all times; to me, this
lowly
self, considering me, as worthy of an object, and gracefully helping
me as
Parama upakaarakan, like the Cow thinks of its calf- This Emperumaan
has
beautiful makara kuNdalams (studs) in His ears; Ever Youthful looking
Lord;
The Cowherd Boy, who had showed Himself (in the veranda) at “idai kazhi”
of
ThirukkOviloor to the three AzhwArs; the One who is like a Lion appearing
in
the midst of Nithya sooris; the One who is most affectionate and kind
towards me; - Such Greatest Most Merciful Emperumaan- I will NOT look
for
any OTHER ONE..
3. The Lord, who first, in order to make me His possession, blessed
me and
entered into my heart; and resided; He does not stay at anyone else’s
heart
as a place of residence now; He has come on his own to bless me the
eternal
kaimkaryam at His Feet, (which alone has been my longing desire in
my mind)
and will not let me be trapped by yama dhUthAs; I am even blessed (by
Him)
to have this thought of Him at this moment. – Such Greatest Emperumaan
of
the most beautiful fertile Thirukkudanthai- the Most wonderful Swami-
My
Father- My Father’s Father- My Kula nAthan- My upakaarakan- (most helpful
One);- How can adiyEn ever forget Him and under what pretext? (Tell
me-)
(“enthaiyai, enthai thandhai thammaanai- empiraanai yetthaal maRakkEnE?”)
4. The Most merciful Emperumaan- KaNNan, who drove the chariot for the
five
pandavas, and enabled them to kill DuryOdhanaadhis in the battle; the
Parama
upakaarakan to adiyEn too; the ruler of Srirangam; My Master; the Chief
of
Parama padham and Nithyars (arangamaaLi; ennaaLi; viNNaaLi); the One
who
aimed arrows and made lankA tremble by walking towards it; the cool
red
lotus eyed most beautiful Emperumaan- BUT for Him, to none else (no
idhara
or anya devatha), my mind will not fall for and melt.. (“thaN thaamaraik
kaNNanukku anRi en manam thaazhndhu nillaadhE..”)
5. The One who appears then and there, whenever the cruel hell like
sorrows
come to torment me, and consoles me “Don’t fear” (anjEl”- maa sucha;);
My
Swami; the One, who has the red lotus Feet; the adorning jewel, in
the group
of Nithya sooris; the Lion of ThiruvEmkatam; the Lord who tore the
horse
(kesi asuran); the cowherd Boy KaNNan, caught for eating stolen butter,
who
stooped Himself as simple (sowlabhyam) that He was tied to mortar,
with
quivering lips, and tears welled in the eyes; (“yetthiRam uralinOdu
iNaindhiRandhu yEngiya yeLivE!”); He is the Honey; the Sweet Milk;
- But for
that sweetest Lord- my mind will not think of anyone else.
6. At all times, He stand in my mind and does not leave me even for
a
fraction of a second from me; He is so great; The One who shows Himself
so
gracefully in the fertile most beautiful Thirumaaliruncholai; the One
who is
like the sweet juice of sugarcane like kaRkaNdu; the One who appeared
as
KaNNan and learn keenly all four Vedas at the feet of a sadAchAryan;
the
greatest Lord who reclined on the milk Ocean; - In spite of all His
scuh
Greats, He is still so simple and accessible for adiyEn (what a sowlabhyam!)
– But for Him, I will never ever sing on anyone else; (“en paNbhanai
anRip
paadal seyyEnE”)
7. The One who is so sweet to me, like the divine music that comes out
of
Veena, while played on the strings; the One who made adiyEn’s eyes,
mind and
the speech as His residence; the One whose residence is also the Vedic
Brahmins’ minds; the Swami of Nithya sooris; my Master; - the One who
is the
blue hued dark ocean colour; MaNi vaNNan; - But for this divine beautiful
blue hued colour of the Lord, my mouth will not talk of any thing else.
8. After being blessed to be the recipient of Emperumaan’s grace in
this
birth itself, what kind of paapam (sin) can dare approach me? The One
who
removes all sorrows and sins that completely distort the jIvAthmA and
grants
only pleasures to the AthmA; the unparalleled One; the only means for
the
world to Hold onto Him; the One who thinks of doing upakaaram and good
to
the world at all times; the One who is praised and worshipped by Nithya
sooris; the ripened sweet fruit for the enjoyment of mumukshus; then,
the
One who desired to love me, and like a thief, without my knowledge
entered
into me, to capture my heart. – Now I (am blessed to) have seen Him..
9. (What a line!) “en seygEn adiyEn? uraiyeer idhaRkkenRu “ The Emperumaan,
who so gracefully, mercifully, stays in my heart permanently, and for
this
upakaaram (help), what can adiyEn (this servant of His) do to pay back!
Tell
me.. the Lord of ThanjaimaamaNikkOil; the One who tore open the chest
of
hiraNyan; the lustrous shining One who is like a fire, so inaccessible;
the
One who built the bridge on the deep ocean to let the strong rAvaNan’s
lankA
be destroyed completely; the One who is worshipped by Devas, and is
like
Huge Beautiful mountain; the One who has the divine form like a cool,
blue
hued mountain; - my mind will never ever greet anyone else.. BUT FOR
this
greatest, most Beautiful Emperumaan.
10. This ten on Emperumaan of ThirunaRaiyoor, is sung by Kaliyan, the
one
who has sharp spear in his hand, the chief of Thirumangai; Emperumaan’s
lotus Feet is so cool, and pleasing to look at enjoy for the eyes.
This ten
is sung for the devotees who pay their obeisance; dance, sing, prostrate
at
such Lotus Feet of Emperumaan, and oh Bhagawathas, who read (sing)
these
ten! The paavams (sins) will never ever stay with you!
Periya Thirumozhi 7.4 Will be added soon.
In the last ten, AzhwAr melted at the great qualities of BhAgawathAs,
and
now, he starts longing for their darling Emperumaan, and gets into
nAYikA
bhAvam. He becomes Parakaala Naayaki. "She" likes the Lord of
Thiruvazhundhoor and enjoys His kalyANA guNAs in this ten.
1. Thiruvazhundhoor has got its residents, who are always youthful brahmins
performing thrikaala sandhyavandhanam and agnihOthram. This place's
greatness is: Emperumaan, who made the hand cuffs of His Father Vasudevar
unfasten automatically, the moment He appeared as Kutti KaNNan. The
Ksheeraandhi nAthan, appeared in the mid night- My Swami; My Kula nAthan;
the One who is interested in adiyEn; stays permanently at this sthalam
like
SreivaikunTam.
2. Thiruvazhundhhor, where, the kurugu birds, retaining the fish in
its
beak, get scared looking at the large fishes that jump out of the beautiful
ponds joyfully, and flee; but come back towards the same a little later
with
temptations of catching the same. At such a beautiful place, Emperumaan
,The
One who rove the chariot victoriously for Arjunan, to destroy the strong
DuryOdhanaadhis in the battle filed; the Chief of Nithyasooris stays
permanently..
3. The bees that look for food in the branches of trees, and flowers,
join
and reside in the fragrant, dark tresses of darting, large eyed women
of
Thiruvazhundhoor. AT this beautiful place, Emperumaan, the most strongest
warrior, Ramapiraan, who effortlessly cut the ten heads of strong rAvaNan,
(the king of lankA, being surrounded by beautiful golden ramparts)
resides
permanently.
4. The caring, loving male bird looks for food in the fields of
Thiruvazhundhhor, (for its little ones). The unparalleled most wonderful
Lord, the little infant Emperumaan, who had reclined on small Banyan
leaf
during praLaya kaalam, having the entire Universe in His stomach for
protecting the same, and then (now) entered into adiyEn heart, and
not only
that ; He stands in my mind and my eyes too; the greatest Param and
Sowlabhyam stays permanently at this sthalam.
5. This place Thiruvazhundhoor is known for very many flags (kodiyE;
vidhaanamE!); the dirt that spreads everywhere due to the large chariots'
running; the fragrance that emanates form the dark hairs of women folks;
all
these dirt with fragrance appear like dark clouds on the earth. Here,
Emperumaan who is the day and night; who has the earth and the sky
as His
possessions; who has the brightest unparalleled light as well as the
eternal
darkness (during praLayam) as His as well; Such greatest SarvEshwaran-
stays
permanently like SrivaikuNtam.
6. The tall buildings, that even tear open the clouds in the sky; thereby
the dark clouds rain drizzle on the beautiful women folks who dance
with the
dancing bells being heard everywhere at Thiruvazhundhoor. Emperumaan,
the
most beautiful Lord, My Swami- Lord of this sthalam, with His curvy
red
lotus mouth, smiled at adiyEn and came near me and stood next to me.
(and
then entered into adiyEn's heart)
7. Thiruvazhundhoor, where the huge homes (as big as the vast ocean
banks..) have got tall buildings on their tops, that are white washed
beautifully externally. The smoke that comes out of the sugar cane
plants
hide even the sun rays that fall on these tall buildings. At this beautiful
sthalam, Emperumaan who had come in the evening- stayed on top of flower
beds- entered into adiyEn's heart, - seen the tears (of joy?) that
roll from
my beautiful eyes- being unable to leave me, - has decided to stay
here
permanently.
8. The dancing bells that are worn by tender footed young women of
Thiruvazhundhoor, make great musical sound at this place, that are
heard at
all times. It appears like a dream, the way He married and united with
me,
tormenting me and my tender waist, also making me joyful to my fullest
heart's content. (Perhaps, He stands here at this sthalam, with folded
hands
with anjali mudra, asking kshama for some of His actions..) (what an
anubhavam of Parakala Nayaki!) (nenju niRaiyak kai kooppi ninRaar..)
9. Thiruvazhundhoor is so beautiful, with the fishes jumping in those
ponds;
with the bees singing on top of the beautiful red lotus flowers; the
swans
swimming along with their mates. This pristinely purest Emperumaan,
who
resides at this sthalam permanently, came yesterday at my place, (by
Himself), (joined me) and stole my jnAnEndriyas, and my beauty, thereby
making my beautiful golden dress loosen and fall from my waist
automatically. He has deserted me.
10. This ten, sung by the king of Thirumangai, on Emperumaan of
Thiruvazhundhoor (where the karuneydhal flowers ape the large beautiful
eyes
of women folks; the kumudham flower show their mouths; the red petalled
lotus lowers mime their faces… such fertile lands). Those who learn
these
ten, will have no sins at all standing near them.
Very happy pongal! Please enjoy eating this insatiable sakkaraip pongal
from
ThirumangaiAzhwAr's "aaraa innamudhu.. karaar karumugil, kaRpakam,
pEraan,
Thirukkudanthai Perumaan" today..
In the last ten, AzhwAr said, “pOna punithar” ( The purest Lord, had
deserted me and gone).
Emperumaan heard that and consoles AzhwAr saying “Where have I gone?
For you
alone, I am here at these Divya Desams! Naturally, AzhwAr is in ecstasy
again enjoying the Divya Desam looking at Emperumaan showing Himself
so
gracefully.
1. the SarvEshawaran, Emperumaan, adiyEn’s Swami, the One who has Sanghu
in
His left hand and fire like ChakrA in His right; the One who appeared
as the
