Dear bhagavathas,

Sri.Madhavakannan of Singapore is doing a great kaimkaryam of translating the divya prabandham in a simple English providing the basic meaning of the pasurams. His write ups are concise yet filled with great anubavams. His translations are strictly as per our sampradayam and adiyen has benefitted a lot from his wonderful translations. So far he has completed Thiruvaymozhi and Peria Thirumozhi and few thiruvandhadhis. adiyen is sure that he will continue to enlighten us with the balance prabandhams in the coming days.

Sri.Madhavakannan used to present meanings for every ten pasurams in one posting. Most of you aware that all such postings are being archeived in Sri.Mani's Srivaishnavam page and also in bhakti list egroups site. But since the postings are scattered spanning over a period of two years it may be bit difficult to browse and read them. adiyen is attempting to compile them for the benefit of bhagavathas who can read the entire Peria thirumozhi in say 11 documents.Hope this will be of use to you.

Now over to Sri.Madhavakannan and adiyen won't interfere with him and Thirumangai azhvar, hereafter.

Periya Thirumozhi- Introduction

 Sri:

Dearest Sisters and Brothers, Happy makara sankaranthi! Happy Pongal!

I pray to Divya Damapthis for Their blessings and AchAryAs and ThirumangaiAzhwAr for Their anugraham for my yet another rash, brazen attempt to enter into tranlsation kaimkaryam. Please forgive me for my errors and mistakes. Anything good in it, I am not to be "blamed"; All Emperumaan's grace and AzhwAr's and AchAryan anugraham.  All mistakes, blunders are mine; Please pat (slap) my back for that.

ThirumangaiAzhwAr's Periya Thirumozhi is what we are going to enjoy next. All of you know well about this Great AzhwAr, and he needs no introduction. However, for novices like me, just a quick account of his biography:

In his early days, as a king, our Lord Narayana was far from AzhwAr's thoughts.  His spiritual journey started with a commitment he made to his sweetheart Kumudhavalli in exchange for her hand in marriage.  While most women may have asked for her suitor's everlasting love, or a diamond ring, or a golden bangle, all our gentle lady Kumudhavalli sought from AzhwAr was that he must wear the marks of Sri Vaishnava and serve food (amudhu) for 1,000 Vaishnavaas everyday for a period of one
year.  This service, initiated as a price for carnal pleasure, turned into a labour of divine love towards the devotees of our Lord Narayana. Years rolled by.  AzhwAr spent all his wealth in the service of Vaishnavas.  With his coffers empty, AzhwAr could not continue the service.  He could not bear the thought of having to turn away the Vasihnavas who by then were accustomed to blessing his abode with their presence.

The feeling of despair turned to anger at the sight of the greedy idle rich strolling around with all their gaudy and ostentatious jewels and showing contempt for the simple and devout Vasihnavas.  This was enough to drive our Great AzhwAr to actions. But it was not just fame that was in store for our AzhwAr.

Our Lord Sriya: Pathih Sriman Narayana decided to intervene and turn AzhwAr away from the ways of the sword.  He and His consort, our divine mother Sri, appeared before him as a newly wed couple bedecked with priceless ornaments.  AzhwAr, who hid himself at ThirumaNankollai, stopped the couple and forcibly relieved them of all the jewellery.

But, there was one piece on our Lord's toe that wouldn't come off however much AzhwAr tried.  In frustration AzhwAr
put his head on the lotus feet of our Lord (!) with the intention of biting the ring off. He asked the Lord as to what is the magic manthra for removing? (The Lord must have mis understood that AzhwAr enquires regarding samsaara bond!) and that sort of SaraNagathy did work! at that moment AzhwAr was drawn in by the beauty of the lotus feet and realized
the true nature of the couple standing in front of him.  The Lord then instructed the esoteric meaning of the "magic manthra" i.e
"Thirumandhiram" or Ashtaaksharam for the Most Blessed AzhwAr, to get initiated by the Lord Himself, with Their "thadutthaaTkoLLal".

Thus AzhwAr learnt of the efficacy of the divine name "Narayana" from our Lord Narayana Himself!

He  immediately burst out to sing the poem "Periya Thirumozhi" (Great divine poem) consisting of 1,084 verses.  The first ten of these verses are dedicated to the name "Narayana."  These first 10 emotional verses give aid and comfort to people.

AzhwAr comes down hard on himself with intense self criticism for the violence he had caused, though for a good cause, for having sought fleeting worldly pleasures, for having squandered his days on mundane pursuits.  He ends each of
these ten verses with a celebration of the divine name Narayana, for after finding this sweet name, AzhwAr declares, he was free from all the sins and assured of the everlasting bliss at the lotus feet of our sweet Lord Narayana   (Biography passage -stole- from Sri Dileepan's post in Dec 95- in bhakti list - Thanks, Dileepan!)

His compositions were :

1. Periya thirumozhi
2. Periya thirumadal
3. SiRiya thirumadal
4. Thiru nedunthANdakam (TNT)
5. Thiru KurunthANdakam(TKT)
6.Thiru vezhuk kurrirukkai.

His pAsurams are marvellous; excellent and have unsurpassed beauty in them. ParAsara Bhattar made use of his TNT to win over his counter part, an advaitin scholar in his arguments and later the advaitin became his disciple 'nam jeeyar'.

Sri RanganAtha himself heard and was greatly pleased with that argument re-enacted from Bhattar quoting from TNT (Please read excellent posts of Sri V. SadagOpan on TNT and TKT duringFeb 96 from Bhakti Archives - a real feast to each one of you).

Thirumangai AzhwAr (a KING, a person who had all kingly royal comforts) walked all the way and VISITED almost all temples. He is simply GREAT, my dearest brothers and sisters. He is JUST S U P E R B AzhwAr. His wordings are his outpourings straight from his heart.

It is told and declared by Tamil Poets of all kinds that His paasurams contain ezhutthu (writing), sol,(words) poruL, (meanings), yaappu (Grammar), aNi (figure of sppech?) etc.. His songs are so great and so nice to recite! It is simple and quite lucid too for reciters and those who know even little Tamil, can understand the lovely emotional outbursts of AzhwAr and his bhakti.

His paasurams depict mainly the archaavathaarams of Divya dEsams, and when He enjoys Them with the descrition of Divya Desams, they simply immerse us in unbounded limitless bliss and pErAnandham.

Thai AzhwAr, when Kumudavalli had asked him to become a Srivaishnava, got his pancha samskaaram done by ThirunaRaiyoor Nambhi. He got his Thiru ManthrOpadEsam from Sri SowrirAja PerumAL; AzhwAr praises These Lords individually with 100 pAsurams! Nambhi naamam sollil NamO NaaraayaNamE".

This AzhwAr had Great regards for NammAzhwAr. He appealed and requested Sri Ranganathan for lsitening to Thiruvaaymozhi from Kaarthigai sukla Ekadasi and now all Sri vaishnava Divya Desams celebrate this uthasavam of reciting Thiruvaaymozhi.

The essence of Periya Thirumozhi is: The worldly life is sorrowful; It can be cured only by the grace of Sriman Narayanan; Hence, get saved by paying obeisance to Him at His Divya Desams (106 Thiruppathis on this Earth). AzhwAr visited almost about 80 Thiruppathis, all on foot; He sang 1253 passurams, next only to NammAzhwAr; (but NammAzhwAr never went
to any Divya Desams; The Lords came to Him!)… Thirumangai AzhwAr padi padi paraparappaay Thirndhaar…He declares: If one surrenders to Sriman Narayanan, "enRum vinaiyaagina saaragilaavE"… (Never will sins accrue to your account!)..

This prabhandham should be read, re-read, re-re read and enjoyed! So nice are they… Last Kaarthigai Kritthigai nakshathram (during AzhwAr Thirunakshathram) as instructed by our KaNNan Swami, I could recite Periya Thirumozhi for ten days preceding his Thirunakshathram and completed on his birthday. It was a great feeling of having read his lovely Periya Thirumozhi. Dearest Sisters and Brothers, my attempting to write these translation is: 1. Those who do not know Tamil, can get to know the meanings, and enjoy. 2. Those who wish to know the meanings (though we all know Tamil, it is still difficult to understand the
meanings) and 3. Being a self-centred person, I myself would like to enjoy them, by reading the pAsurams and writing these translations.

May I request for all your aseervaathams and wishes for such a rash attempt? (Fools rush in where angels fear to tread).

Smt Jayshree Narasimhan has volunteered with kutthu viLakku and manjaneer,
awaiting Kaliyan and Kumudha valli Naacchiyaar.).

Let us enjoy Thirumangai mannan’s superb ten on this Lord.. (There are 30 on
Oppiliappan Koil) All ten pAsurams – no! nine pAsurams in this ten, end with
“AaNdaay! Unaik kaaNbadhOr arUl enakku aruLudhiyEl* vENdEn manai
vaazhkkaiyai viNNagar mEyavanE!”. Means: Oh Lord! (the One who rules me!)
Please grant me the bliss of seeing You! Oh Lord of ViNNagaram!  ( I ) Don’t
want this samsaaric affliction..  (very apt for us..)

1. Devas and devotees (thoNdar) pay their obeisance offering most fragrant
flowers at Your Feet, When You stood in the yaagham of Bhali and measured
the vast earth with Your Feet! Oh SwamI!! Oh Lord! (the One who rules me!)
Please grant me the bliss of seeing You and let me be blessed with Your
darshan.! Oh Lord of ViNNagaram!  ( I ) Don’t want this samsaaric
affliction..

2. Oh Sathya kaamaa! Sathya sankalpaa! The One who pledged to help Devas and
blessed Sivan to swallow the poison that came out of ThiruppaaRkadal, when
You were mercifully helping Devas in their churning of wavy milky ocean!
When Devas enjoyed drinking the amudham (nectar), You enjoy Periya PiraaTTi
(in Your chest), who also came out of the churning.. Please grant me the
bliss of seeing You and let me be blessed with Your darshan.! Oh Lord of
ViNNagaram!  ( I ) Don’t want this samsaaric affliction.

3. Kuzhal niRa vaNNA! Oh Lord, who has the dark hair like colour! Utilising
service (kaimkaryam) of Sivan  (the one who shares a part of Your
ThirumEni), red fire like coloured one), You made him destroy and burn
Thiripuram! (How?) By letting Yourself into that big mountain-like bow,
getting bent and into that sharp fiery, fire ball like arrow (from that
bow), You performed the whole show! Please grant me the bliss of seeing You
and let me be blessed with Your darshan.! Oh Lord of ViNNagaram!  ( I )
Don’t want this samsaaric affliction.

4.  The two lustrous ones on the sky- the Sun; the moon; and the seven
lOkams; all beings- all of them were eaten and retained in Your little
stomach and You reclined on the little Banyan leaf, as a little Kutti
darling child! Please grant me the bliss of seeing You and let me be blessed
with Your darshan.! Oh Lord of ViNNagaram!  ( I ) Don’t want this samsaaric
affliction.

5. Saptha dweepams, ((Seven worlds), Seven oceans; Seven mountains; - for
all of them You are the Creator and Director, Nirvaahakan. You had retained
all these in Your belly, and in that state, You showed Yourself as the
meaning  (essence) of akaaram (or praNavam?) ! (vOr ezhutthu uruvaanavanE!)
Please grant me the bliss of seeing You and let me be blessed with Your
darshan.! Oh Lord of ViNNagaram!  ( I ) Don’t want this samsaaric
affliction.

6. Oh PerumaanE! The One who is proclaimed (as the Chief) by those
pramaaNams- the four Vedas! Oh Lord the One who can not be comprehended even
by Brahmaa and Devas! (Such greatest Lord!- Accharya bhoothan!) Oh Lord of
seven lOkAs; seven mountains; seven oceans, etc.. as their sarIrI (they
being His sarIram-part of His Body..)! Please grant me the bliss of seeing
You and let me be blessed with Your darshan.! Oh Lord of ViNNagaram!  ( I )
Don’t want this samsaaric affliction.

7.  Oh EmperumaanE! The One who is the sweetly recited swaram of Vedic hymns
that are uttered by brahmins  (vedic scholars) while they pour freshly made
ghee in fire (which they groom), during their performance of yaagam. Veda
swaroopI! Please grant me the bliss of seeing You and let me be blessed with
Your darshan.! Oh Lord of ViNNagaram!  ( I ) Don’t want this samsaaric
affliction.

8. (This is for us! Very appropriate). “kaadhal seydhu iLayavar kalavi
tharum/ vEdhanai adhu veruvudhalaam/ aadhalin, unadhu adi aNuguvan naan…”.
Oh Pristinely purest EmperumaanE! The One who adorn the Head with crown made
of fresh most fragrant flowers! Oh Lord, who shows Your most divinely
Beautiful form and saves me! (PuNNiyanE!) The mating (pleasure) that young
women give / yield (“vinai vEdhanai”) is the entirety of sorrows and leads
to perennial samsaaric afflictions. Thinking further on that line, makes me
shiver with fear. Hence, I approach Your Feet! Please grant me the bliss of
seeing You and let me be blessed with Your darshan.! Oh Lord of ViNNagaram!
( I ) Don’t want this samsaaric affliction.

9. (An excellent one!) “saadhalum piRatthalum enRu ivaRRai/ kaadhal seyyadhu
un kazhal adaindhEn..” Oh EmperumaanE! The One who is the Nirvaahakan of
four Vedas; who is the sarIrI of Brahmaa, Indran and Sivan (the greatest
trio of Devas) et al..! Realising the birth and death vicious cycles, and
the endlessness of that, with no further desire (for future births), I have
held on to Your Feet! Please grant me the bliss of seeing You and let me be
blessed with Your darshan.! Oh Lord of ViNNagaram!  ( I ) Don’t want this
samsaaric affliction.

10. This ten on ThiruviNNagaram Divya Desam, which is full of dense gardens,
full of fragrant flowers, has been composed by Kaliyan, who is loved by one
and all. Those who read this ten (or these meanings), will be BLESSED TO
REACH/ATTAIN the Lotus Feet of the Lord, who took the avtaar of Vaamanan.
(Bhagawathas may please read the excellent posts by Sri Sampath rengarajan
on ThiruviNNagaram Divya Desam mahathmyam from Feb-97 or July 97 bhakti
archives titled “Vaamanan adiyiNai maruvuvarE”. )

Periya Thirumozhi 6.2- maRandhE unnai munnam maRandha madhiyin manatthaal!

AzhwAr had appealed to ThiruviNNagaram Oppiliappan, and said that he hates
the samsaaric life and longs to see and be blessed with his darshan. PerumAL
never heeded. AzhwAr assumed that Emperumaan still is perhaps under the
impression that he (AzhwAr)’s attachment to sensual pursuits have not
disappeared fully. Hence, AzwAr mentions all his earlier trespasses,
attachment /entanglement with sense organs/pleasures, his desire for
materials/ worldly pleasures, his apprehension and fear of the future due to
his earlier actions, and says “These sins or karmic diseases can not be made
to disappear by adiyEn at all. Only through the purushaakaaram
(recommendation) of Periya PiraaTTi, adiyEn pleads for Your grace to take me
to You for saving adiyEn..”. Simply the essence of Prapatthi saasthram
housed in this ten. May I request Bahawathas to read them in Tamil (if you
can). It is an excellent ten. (THOUGH AZHWAR SAYS ALL THIS, IT IS MORE
APPLICABLE AND SUITABLE FOR ME.)

1. “poRutthEn punsol nenjil poruL inbham ena iraNdum / iRutthEn*
aimpulangatkadanaayina vaayilotti aRutthEn* aarvach cheRRamavai thannai
manatthagaRRi veRutthEn* nin adaindhEn ThiruviNNagar mEyavanE/” I had
listened and also endured the lowly “other” (idhara vishayam)/ abusive
statements. The materialistic fruits and the desires – I had given them too.
I liked those who were helpful to me for my above (worldly) pursuits and
hated those who were not. NOW I have made all this get removed from my mind
from the roots completely. That likes and dislikes – I have plucked away and
stated hating that earlier attitude of mine as well. Oh Lord of
ThiruviNNagaram Diva Desam! adiyEn surrenders to You.

2. “maRandhEn unnai munnam maRandha madhiyin manatthaal* iRandhEn
atthanaiyum adhanaal idumbhaik kuzhiyil* piRandhEyeytthozhidhEn PerumAn
Thirumaabhaa! SiRandhEn nin adikkE ThiruviNNagaanE!” You- who needs to be
always for ever meditated and thought of- have been forgotten by me from
time immemorial. And then, even when I had heard about You, I never showed
interest in my mind and wasted my time. Hence, I was made to suffer with
numerous births and deaths, by being born of the sorrow filled garbha
vaasam. I had no strength (shakti) nor an effort to attain You. Oh Lord, the
One who has (Purushaakara) PiraaTTi in Your chest! Now, adiyEn has been a
worthy object of ONLY YOUR Lotus Feet, ThiruviNNagaraanE!

3. “maanEy nOkkiyartham vayiRRuk kuzhil uzhaikkum* UnEr aakkai thannai
udhavaamai uNarndhu* vaanE maanilamE vandhu uvandhu en manatthu irundha*
thEnE ! nin adaindhEn ThiruviNNagaraanE! Oh Chief of Sri VaikuNTam! Oh Lord
of the whole vast Universe! From Sri Vaikuntam, You came here; willingly and
also happily (with great enthusiasm) entered into my heart and stay there
permanently. Sweetest Honey ! ThiruviNNaraga PerumAnE! This body (sarIram),
that comes out of the garbham of beautiful deer eyed women, though is meant
only for getting You and serving You, adiyEn understands and realises that
this sarIram is not helping me (or co-operative) to attain the purushaartham
(i.e. You.) Hence, adiyEn surrenders to Your with YOU AS THE WAY AND THE
GOAL AS WELL.

4. “piRindhEn peRRa makkaL peNdir enRu ivar pin udhavaadhu aRindhEn* nee
paNittha aRuL ennum oL vaaL uruvi yeRindhEn* aimpulangaL idar theera
yeRindhu vandhu seRindhEn* nin adikkE ThiruviNNagaraanE!” The children,
wives, other relative- et al are not helpful at the end (of life) – I have
realised that. And hence, I have separated – delinked myself from them.
Using the word (meymmeip peru vaartthai)- the Charam slOkam – sarva
dharmaan..maa sucha: - as the sharp strong lustrous sword), I have cut off
my attachments with five senses. Thus, removing all my hurdles (with Your
grace) adiyEn performs saraNagathy and surrenders to Your Feet only,
ThiruviNNagaraanE!

5. The young women, who have fragrant black tresses that house bees
drinking honey from the flowers bedecked on the hair, address and greet
their great kings as “Long live” and those kings, who ruled the worlds have
gone dead and are no more – is also a fact, from time immemorial. This
wealth is never ever permanent. Hence, I do not want this family material
life and any more, nor its transitory pleasures; Thus, leaving all that,
adiyEn surrenders to Your Feet only,, ThiruviNNagaraanE!

6. These senses that need to serve only the Lord- I do not wish to let
them do what they long to enjoy the “other” matters and let me run behind
them. Oh strongest Lord (mallA!) the One who fought with ChaaNoora,
Mushthikan, and killed them! Oh Lord! the One who destroyed the wealthy,
beautiful, rampart –surrounded lankA with Your divine bow! (villA!) adiyEn
surrenders to Your Feet only,, ThiruviNNagaraanE!

7. (a beautiful pAsuram! Lamenting on the influence of those cruel five
senses!) I, who had never thought about You so far, have now become
different and plead this to You, my SwamI! Please take it to Your
ThiruvuLLam. These five senses are competing with each other to take their
share on me and are trying their level best to push me into the most cruel
hell and torture me terribly. You retained them in my sarIram for making me
and putting me on the right track (and serving You). Thus, not trusting
these cruel senses, adiyEn surrenders to Your Lotus Feet, ThiruviNNagaraanE!

8. The worst cruel, incorrigible sins of mine, are trying to push me into
the terrible hell, and are chasing me like a fire with tongues of flame from
its mouth, in order to let me go astray and away from the Athma guNam. Oh
Chief of NithyasUris! The One who removed the sorrow of the moon! adiyEn
surrenders to Your Lotus Feet, ThiruviNNagaraanE!

9. Periya PiraaTTi- the one who stays in the fresh lovely Lotus flower;
BhUmi PiraaTTi, Nithys sooris- You are Their only personification of
enjoyment! The One who went as the unparalleled messenger to DhuryOdhanan!
The One who spoke words of comfort and assurance to Pandavas! The One who
stays in my heart like the lustre of a lamp! The One who is praised by
VedAs! Veda purushA! adiyEn surrenders to Your Lotus Feet,
ThiruviNNagaraanE!

10. This ten is on the great Divya Desam of ThiruviNNagaram, which is full
of honey dripping most fragrant flowers, composed by Kaliyan, the one from
Thirumangai, who has the sharp spear that can pass through effortlessly and
smoothly into the bodies of enemies! Those who read them, will be praised as
the chief and also be blessed to join the world of Nithya sooris i.e.
SrivaikuNTam.

Periya Thirumozhi 6.3- maRRumOr Deivam eNNEn! Deivam piRidhu aRiyEn!

AhwAr surrendered to than oppaaril appan, Oppiliappan PerumAL of
ThiruviNNagaram Divya Desam, saying “I do not wish to live in this world.
Please take me to Your Feet!”. Emperumaan, the most merciful and most
compassionate, gives the Jivan yet another chance to check if he really
wants to get rid of the bhandham. AzhwAr bursts out with his dislike and nit
wanting the worldly pleasures(?) and the intense, urgency of his (tvarai)
for reaching Paramapadham to serve Him eternally at His lotus Feet. The last
ten on Oppiliappan.

1. thuRappEn allEn; inbham thuRavaadhu nin uruvam*/ maRappEn allEn enRum
maRavaadhu* yaan ulagil/ piRappEnaaga eNNEn PiRavaamaip peRRandhu* nin
thiRatthEn aanathanamaiyaal ThiruviNNagaraanE!…. (What a beautiful pAsuram!)
Oh ThiruviNNaraga perumAnE! I will never ever afford to leave this pleasure
(bliss) of enjoying You. Hence, I will never ever forget the beautiful
Divine form of Yours at all times. By thus not forgetting Your form, I will
never be born again. I am blessed (with this no- birth status) de to Your
“krupai” on me, making me a sEshabhUthan (servant) for You.

2. ThirumaalE! ThiruviNNagaraanE! Oh Emperumaane! The One who eagerly awaits
the time to grant Your grace to the beings, as a Dharma swarUpi, and as
Parama kaaruNyan! The relation with these worldly human beings living in
this world, and the desire and hatred towards them- I have cut off and
detached myself from these and hence I am blessed to perform kaimkaryam at
Your Lotus Feet. I am blessed to retain You, the Biggest One, in my heart
without ever separating Yourself from me.

3. “maanEy nOkku nallar mathipOl magatthu ulavaum/ oonEy kaNvaaLik kudaindhu
Ottandhu unnai adaindhEn/ kOnE! KuRungudiuL kuzhagaa! ThirunaRaiyoor thEnE!
Varupunalsoozh ThiruviNNagaraanE! ……… (What a Tamil!) KurungudiyuL kuzhagaa!
The Sowlabhya Lord of Thirukkurungudi! The Honey of Thirunaraiyoor! (So
sweet!) ThiruvinnagaraanE! My Swami! The deer- eyed women, whose eyes are on
their moon-like faces, are made of flesh (maamisam- oon), blood and wires..
(nerves). Those eyes are chasing me as arrows, due to which I come running-
rushing (Ottandhu) to You and surrendering to You.

4. ThiruviNNagaraanE! The One who always does good to me! (puNNiyanE!).
Till now, I immersed myself in the flood of sensual pleasures, hugging the
shoulders of young women, who have sandal smeared tender breasts, and due to
which I was deeply trapped in the scorching hell of this samsaaric worldly
life. Now, I have been blessed to come to You, considering Your Lotus Feet
alone as the means. By doing that, I am able to get rid of all my sins.
Then, I have reached You.

5. “maRROr Deivam eNNEn unnai en manatthUl vaiithup/ peRREn peRRadhum
piRavaamai Emperumaan!/”…… (Assertive TRUTH!).. Oh ThiruviNNagaraanE! The
Most victorious Lord! the One who killed rAvaNan, the king of lankA
(surrounded by ocean)! I will never ever consider anyone else (any other
demi-god) except You as the God, as my refuge! My Swami! (due to that) I am
blessed with the greatest to retain and have You stay in my heart. That is
the blissful “piRavaamai” (due to this, I will never ever be born). (means:
Just simply consider Sriman Narayanan, as the ONLY GOD. That is adequate..-
same has been told by Thirumazhisai AzhwAr is Naammukhan Thiruvandhaadhi-
no. 68 Yama, the demigod of death, Dharma raajan, the one who doesn’t
differentiate between people, and does his dharmic action of judgement
unbiased, called his servants and workers (yamakinkarars) and said “Listen
to me! This is a standing order and a secret. Never disobey this. Anyone,
who does not worship other demigods, has realised the Parathvam. Even if
they forget to utter the divine name of Narayanan (at the time of his
death), still, be soft towards him; Don’t be cruel and punish him; pay
obeisance to him. He has to be respected. )

6. ThiruviNNagaraanE! The dark collyrium like oceans, the earth, the earth’s
jewels- the mountains, the Moon and the Sun- are all Your servants- You are
Sarva sEshi (the Chief Master of all). I, who have been blessed to consider
(or have realised) You as my sEshi- have realised the way to get saved.
Thus, having realised this, I will never ever consider any one else as God.
(uyym vagai uNarndhEn; maRROr Deivam piRidhu aRiyEn ThiruviNNagaraanE!)

7. (DO NOT MISS TO READ THIS!) “maRROr deivam thEREn unnai allaal
ThiruviNNagaraanE!”… Oh Lord of ThiruviNNAgaram! AdiyEn- Your servant, has
got one other more thing to say. Without letting me elaborate further, You
should bless me with this plea of mine and take it to Your mind. (Listen..)
I WILL NEVER EVER UTTER (WITH MY LIPS) “OTHER” (demi) Gods. Whatever may be
their qualities, I WILL NEVER EVER TAKE THEM AS MY SUPPORT. (ananya
gatitvam.. No other one except You..)

8. (AzhwAr gets into Parama bhakti, with intense longing for Him and for
Paramapadham..) People, who are like a tree, in the middle of a forest,
which has lost all its leaves, and is pushed strongly by the strong, huge
elephant, though are Devas (or others), - I WILL NOT consider them as my
support or refuge, I have reached You as MY ONLY REDEMPTION AND REFUGE. When
have You planned to grant adiyEn the mOksham, the Parama padham, for adiyEn
is blessed (by You) with this attitude?. (AzhwAr tells in the first line
that except Hi, all have temporary lives including Devas.)

9. Og the strong dancer! The killer of Madhu! Unparallled, Only One in the

the Chest! ThiruviNNagaraanE! Please bless me and grant Your eternal

10. This ten is on the “appan” – Oppaaril appan of ThiruviNNagaram Divya
Desam, who shows Himself so gracefully at ThiruviNNagaram Divya Desam. It is
composed by Kaliyan- who has strong hands and gives away wealth like the
dark rain laden clouds. Those who can read them, WILL NOT HAVE ANY PAAVAM
(SINS) STAND NEAR THEM.

Periya Thirumozhi 6.4- why do you come coughing to us, you, oldie?

(Thanks very much for Sri Sadagopan’s encouraging words on adiyEn’s ramble.
If at all anything is found good, it is Thirumangai mannan’s powerful words
that creep in (inadvertantly) in my translations. ).
AzhwAr is not able to wait any further longing for Parama padham. He decides
to enjoy the Divya Desams, till then like a thirsty person looks for
“thaNNeer pandhal” (a small hut, where volunteers serve water for
pilgrims..). AzhWar addresses his mind “Let us enjoy the Divya Desams like
ThirunaRaiyoor.. There is never a permanent constant pleasure from women.. “
He describes very beautifully the transitory illusory sensual pleasures.
AzhwAr calls his mind and requests it to come with him to ThirunaRaiyoor.

1. When the body gets completely worn out (at old age) and when the eyes are
filled with dirt (peeLai), and lose their eyesight, (due to ageing), when
the throat is filled with phlegm with thunderous intermittent coughs, the
women, who speak sweetly (as their illusory sweet voice appears to
youngster’s ears), advise you mockingly, “ (.. thaatthaa!).. go slowly.. ”.
Before they do that, oh mind! Get up. (i.e. Before we get old) Let us
proceed to ThirunaRaiyoor, and pay obeisance to the Lord there, where
SarvEshwaran, (who is worshipped by Vedas and with Yaagams, and who has the
huge mountains and the vast skies as His possessions), stays permanently.

2. Before the fragrant haired young women ask us “Why did you come to us,
with such continuous coughs, and phlegm?” and mock at us collectively, oh
mind! Come. Let us proceed to ThirunaRaiyoor, and hold on to Him, (who has
under His control, the moon, the sun, the air, the fire etc.., and who is
the Param jyOthi, who is our Swami)who stays there.

3. Before those young women collectively tease us saying “yOv! PeriyavarE!
Why are you looking at us and our alankaram (dressing or make-up), even
after you get so old?”, all that we need to do is: oh mind! Come to
ThirunaRaiyoor, and let us pay our obeisance and salutations to Him (who
stands here willingly to bless the Chozha king, whose arrogance and
ahankaram had been tamed by Him and paid his (king’s) obeisance with folded
hands to this SarvEshawaran).

4. Oh mind! Before those young women of narrow tender waist (which conquers
over even the creeper), push us out and shut their entrance doors, all that
we need to do is: proceed to most beautiful and most fertile land of
ThiruNaraiyoor, and pay obeisance to our Lord, (nampan) (whom we adore and
desire), who stays permanently there.

5. Young deer, fish, spear, the beautiful pond, - all of these have been
conquered by those young women’s eyes, and before such women (who had
earlier “pretended to be having” affection towards us), with words full of
“kapatam” (not straight forward?), mock at us and abandon us, oh mind! Let
us go to ThirunaRaiyoor (which is full of most beautiful fields) and pay our
obeisance to that place which can grant good that we wish for.

6. The lightning like narrow waist-lined women, whose earlier love (for us)
are now found missing, and further tease asking “why do you come coughing to
us, you, oldie?”. Before they do that, let us pay our obeisance, oh mind, to
that most charming fertile, ThirunaRaiyoor Divya Desam, where the Lord, who
(through Hanumaan) ignited ocean surrounded lankA with fire, stays
permanently.

7. The bow like foreheaded women, change their earlier desire to dislike
towards us, due to our ageing and mock / tease saying “this oldie (kizham)
is “pollaadhavan” and craves for women; now he has worn out completely.
(“thiraindhaan”.)”. before we listen to all these mockery (before getting
old), all that we need to do is, “oh mind, let us pay our obeisance to
ThirunaRaiyoor, where Vedic scholars and virtuous people live in reciting
Vedas and spread saasthras to the whole world.

8. The sword like beautiful eyed women, who had earlier considered those men
as “manmathan” (cupid) are now addressing them saying to other women, “this
old guy- with such phlegm, why is he here? Ask him.”. Before that happens,
oh mind! Let us pay our salutations to ThirunaRaiyoor daily in which, at all
times, the ArAdhanam and festivities through Yaagams are witnessed and
enjoyed.

9. Women of bimbha fruit like lips, drop their love (desire) for us and we
start walking with hunch backs and with the support of walking stick. Before
that happens, oh mind! Let us pay our obeisance to the blessed Divya Desam
of ThirunaRaiyoor where SarvEshawaran (who had removed the disease of cool
lustrous moon), who stays there permanently .

10. This ten is on the appeal to the mind saying “oh mind! Let us pay our
salutation to ThirunaRaiyoor, before the moon like foreheaded women start
disliking us and mock at us (for our old age). This is composed by
Thirumangai Kaliyan, who has sharp blood stained spear in his hand. Those
who recite them without fail, will be praised by one and all and rule Sri
vaikuNtam.

Periya Thirumozhi 6.5- paarai oorum bhaaram theerap paarthan thErai oorum Devan

AzhwAr who had entered into ThirunaRaiyoor, fearing and running away from
women, enjoys the Lord of ThirunaRaiyoor, showing Himself so beautifully and
gracefully at this charming Divya Desam, along with his Divine Consort
permanently in this yet another excellent ten.

1. The SarvEshwaran, who had churned stirring the Milky Ocean
(ThiruppaaRkadal), the One who took out the nectar (amudham) from there and

filled gardens and cuckoos peck and play with tender mango leaves of
pregnant mango tree (i.e. full of ripened mangoes) .

3. The horses, elephants, chariots, army men, - were all effortlessly
destroyed at lankA, including lankA itself by Sri Ramapiraan, who stays here

caught the by the farmers who plough the lands.

4. The Lord, who is such a Sowlabhyan of being caught red handed stealing

this ThirunaRiyoor Divya Desam, where the lovely peacocks dance and the
beautiful lotus flowers just bloom, on which the bees hum and sing merrily.

5. The SarvEshawaran, who killed seven bulls, the lovely darling of tender,
beuatiful Nappinnai PiraaTTi, the One who crawled in between the two marudha
trees; stays here at ThirunaRaiyoor Divya Desam, where the charming
beautiful swans walk along with their mates, behind the beautiful women,
(and imitate their walks, behind their backs), felling shy for not being
able to do juctice to their miming.. (What great AzhwAr's poetic
imagination!!)

6. The One who drank the poisonous milk of Poothanai and drank her life too;
the One who killed the kuvalayaapeetam elephant, (at the entrance of
kamsan's palace); stays here at this ThirunaRaiyoor Divya Desam, where swans
drink honey from dark "neydhal" flowers and sleep on lotus flowers.

saasthras and upaveedham by the teacher Saantheepini, and got back his

Periya Thirumozhi 6.6- naRaiyoor ninRa nambhiyE..

1. The Lord- SarvEshwaran aimed the arrows victoriously to let the heads,
and arms of asurAs fall on the ground. He stands at ThirunaRaiyoor Diva
Desam, where men (beautiful like manmathan and Murugan) and women (who have
spear like beautiful darting eyes) live. This ParipoorNan of ThirunaRaiyoor,
has taken adiyEn (dAsa bhUthan of His), in His ThiruvuLLam (mind) as His
eternal servant and has accepted and acknowledged adiyEn's kaimkaryam. He
alone is our support.

2. This Lord, who appeared as Parasuraman, having the sharp unparalleled
"parasu" (axe) in His hand, that cut the heads of kings of 21 generations,
has the victorious garland on His shoulders is here at ThirunaRaiyoor, where
lotus flowers try to ape the beauty of those large eyed women folks living
in and the white mullai flower buds imitate their teeth. This Lord alone is
our "paRRu" support.

3. On the pristinely pure, clear ThiruppaaRkadal, Thiruvananthaazhwaan,
exhaling poisonous air, and having anger on enemies (of Emperumaan), on
whom, Ksheeraandhi Naathan, Sriya: Pathi Sriman Narayanan, reclines and has
Yoga nithrA; Also, He chased and finished off the deer that jumped and
galloped. He went and begged for three measures of earth from Bhali. Such
greatest Perumaan is here at ThirunaRaiyoor as NaRaiyoor Nambhi, where the
beautiful ponds reminds us of the eyes of women folks living therein, while
the lotus flowers therein reminds us of their faces.

4. The little Kutti KaNNan, who stole the butter and got Himself caught red
handed by His mother YashOdha. Angry mom tied Him to the coral, having Him
cry with quivering lips. (What a sowlabhyam!) This Kutti KaNNan is the
Nambhi, who stays permanently at ThirunaRaiyoor, where the bees hum and
drink honey from the flowers and the mullai flowers are scattered on the
ground due to the gentle breeze that appears like the smiling face of
ThirunaRaiyoor.

5. AT Vadamathura (present day MathurA), He wished to see the dhanur yaagam
and killed the ChaaNoora mushtikan there (as appointed by Kamsan to kill
KaNNan), and then pounced on the strong Kamsan to finish him too. He is the
One who jumped and danced on each head of 1000 heads of most poisonous and
venomous snake KaaLiyan. This KaNNa pirran, is the ThirunaRaiyoor Nambhi,
where brahmins who are blemishless and are learned Vedic scholars live in.

6. "vaLLi kozhunan mudhalaaya makkaLOdu mukkaNNaan veLgi Oda…" Along with
the children like Murugan, the husband of vaLLi, Sivan (mukkaNNaan) came to
fight against Emperumaan, in support of VaaNAsuran and even they were made
to run away showing their backs by Emperumaan and the Lord effortlessly cut
the mountain of 1000 shoulders of VaaNan. This greatest oppaaril appan,
Emperumaan is the Nambhi of ThirunaRaiyoor, where the male crab that gets
caught within the Lotus flower comes out later (next day, when it blooms)
crawling towards the female crab, which, on seeing the pollens of lotus
flowers in the male's mouth gets suspicious and gets into "oodal" (anger?)
and enters into the fields.

7. The Lord, who drove the chariot of Arjunan is such a way ensuring the
onslaught of kings (on the enemy side); the One who lifted effortlessly the

This greatest Lord is the Nambhi of ThirunaRaiyoor, where brahmins who learn
four Vedas, who have the ability to perform the five Yaagams, six a~ngas,
seven swarams (of music) stay.

8. In order to have Draupathi (Paanchaali) tie her hair (tresses) due to her
vow taken, KaNNan blew the victorious Conch shell, to make the enemy kings
like DuryOdhanan (who rode on strong elephants) get butterflies in stomachs.
He is the Lord of ThirunaRaiyoor, where merciful Brahmins of the likes of
capable Chathur mukha Brahma and Sivan stay permanently.

9. "aaRum, piRaiyum, aravamum, adampum, sadai mEl aNindhu udalam neeRum
poosi yEroorum iRaiyOn seNru kuRai yirappa; ". The ganges, the crescent
moon, the snake, the "adampam" flowers are all in his head (sadai); he
applies burnt ashes on his body; the One who rides on a bull (rishabam), is
Sivan. He went and pleaded to remove his grievance and his kabaala (skull)
dhOsham when it got stuck to his hand, which was removed by Emperumaan
Sriman Narayanan. All that He did was to sprinkle a droplet of His most
fragrant, sweat taken from the Divine chest of His and filled the skull.
This greatest unparalleled Lord, SarvEshawaran is the Nambhi of
ThirunaRaiyoor, which is surrounded by most beautiful and fragrant gardens.

10. This ten is on the Lord (nambhI) of ThirunaRaiyoor, where the brahmins
whose thinking is only performance of kaimkaryams to Emperumaan. This is
sung by the king of Thirumangai. Those who sing them (knowing its menaings)
will not get their past sins dare stay and /or approach them. Also, they are
sure to attain Parama padham and be surrounded by Nithyasooris lovingly.

Periya Thirumozhi 6.10- naanum sonnEn; namarum uraimin; NAMO NARAYANA!!!

Thirumangai AzhwAr performed SaraNAgathy at the Lotus Feet of ThirunaRaiyoor
Emperumaan; Now, he relishes the greatest Divine name Narayana here. He
utters “namO Narayana”. This word “nama:” is great. Na- ma: not I. Means: No
ahankara, mamakaram. We are eternal servants (daasathvam) to Emperumaan.
Interestingly, the word “namasthE” and namaskaram, must have come from this.
Also, muslims call their prayer as :namaaz” . So, namo Narayana should be
uttered always. It can be uttered or said at anytime under any
circumstances. (perhaps, the word name, the namaa – does it relate to
namO..?- to remind us of this daasathvam when we tell that our “name” is
this…)

NamO NarayanA!

(Extract from Sri Sadagopan’s post) The angam of Vedam known as Niruktham
interprets words according to etymology. In this glossorial interpretation,
the word "nama:" splits as "na" and "ma". The aksharam , "ma" denotes
Jeevan. "na" refers to no freedom (svanthram) of its own for the Jeevan.
Therefore the combination of "na" and "ma" leading up to nama: sabdham
points out that there is no independent existence for the Jeevan outside the
Lord, its Master. The banishment of the thought of independence of its own
away from that of the Lord is the prAdhaanyam in the Sookshma Yojanai of the
nama: sabdham.)- Thanks, Sadagopan mama.

Let us now enjoy the greatness of this Namo Narayana in this thirumozhi.

1. “nadantha nambhi naamam sollil namO nArAyaNamE… The ParipoorNan-
SarvEshwaran- the One who reclines at Thirukkudanthan; the One who has
brought back the BhUmi PiraaTTi on His Horn; The One who removes all our
samsaaric afflictions; the One who crossed the Ocean and destroyed the
enemy’s fort; the One who measured the whole Universe with his two steps; -
If one has to utter His Divine name, it is simply “NamO Narayana” alone.

2. “nadanthaanudaiya naamam sollil namO nArAyaNamE..” … Here AzhwAr says the
PerumAL the One who chased the KaalIngan with His tender lotus feet, running
in between the lotus flowers and fought with him; The One who took huge
Vaaraaham and brought back the Earth; the One who walked on the world with
his two steps; His Divine Name is NamO NarayanA alone..

3. The One who broke the strong tusk of Kuvalaapeetam; the One who churned
the milky ocean; the One who has Periya PiraaTTi in His Chest; the One who
never obeyed YashOdhA and ate the butter and curd; If one has to utter His
Divine name, it is simply “NamO Narayana” alone.

4. The One who stands gracefully at Thiruppaadakam; the One who destroyed
the strong body of rAvAnan wirth His Divine bow; my swAmi; the One who did
good to vibhIshaNan; If one has to utter His Divine name, it is simply “NamO
Narayana” alone.

5. The One wwho lifted effrotlessly the Govardhana mountain to protect the
cattle from torrential downpour; the One who effrotlessly killed the seven
bulls; the One who destroyed the lankA and its king; If one has to utter His
Divine name, it is simply “NamO Narayana” alone.

6. The One who victoriously won over and killed rAvaNan, the strongest king
of lankA, effortlessly with the army of monkeys and bears; SarvEshwaran; ,
the One who is like the sweetest honey at all times for me; the One who is
the Divine consort of PirraTTi; If one has to utter His Divine name, it is
simply “NamO Narayana” alone. My dear ones, You also tell Namo Narayana; I
will also utter. Naanum sonnEn; namarum uraimin namO nArAyaNamE”

7. The One who is Apath rakshakan; who have crated the mountains; the
worlds; the oceans; the directions; the earth; the One who lifted the Huge
mountain to save the cattle; My Swami- If one has to utter His Divine name,
it is simply “NamO Narayana” alone.

8. When there was incessant downpour, everyone was awe struck and did not
know what to do. They thought it is a rehearsal of mahA praLayam. Even
during prAlayam, it is He who helps. Now, when they (the cowherd folks went
to Him and prayed “ You alone are our rakshakan:” The little KaNNan simply
lifted the huge massive mountain from the earth and lifted on top of Him, so
that everyone can come underneath and was saved. The greatest Lord who, made
this happen; If one has to utter His Divine name, it is simply “NamO
Narayana” alone.

9. The One who is Chief of Periya PiraaTTi, seated on Lotus, of BhUmi
PiraaTTi, of Brahman, (chathur mukha brahmA), Indran and Sivan and all other
Devas), Their nirvaahakan; our Swami, too; the chief of Nithyars; If we
have to get rid of karmic diseases, utter His Divine name, which is simply
“NamO Narayana” alone.

10. The Lord of ThirunaRAiyoor, which is surrounded by ponds, pools, lakes,
and so beautiful- about Him is this ten of Periya Thirumozhi sung by
Kaliyan, the chief of Thirumangai, who have (been blessed to be) corrected
himself from being the master of beautiful darting eyed women; Those who
remember this Divine name of this Chief of ThirunaRaiyoor, by reading these
ten verses, will have no sins (however cruel) stand near them.
