Dear bhagavathas,
Sri.Madhavakannan of Singapore is doing a great kaimkaryam of translating the divya prabandham in a simple English providing the basic meaning of the pasurams. His write ups are concise yet filled with great anubavams. His translations are strictly as per our sampradayam and adiyen has benefitted a lot from his wonderful translations. So far he has completed Thiruvaymozhi and Peria Thirumozhi and few thiruvandhadhis. adiyen is sure that he will continue to enlighten us with the balance prabandhams in the coming days.
Sri.Madhavakannan used to present meanings for every ten pasurams in one posting. Most of you aware that all such postings are being archeived in Sri.Mani's Srivaishnavam page and also in bhakti list egroups site. But since the postings are scattered spanning over a period of two years it may be bit difficult to browse and read them. adiyen is attempting to compile them for the benefit of bhagavathas who can read the entire Peria thirumozhi in say 11 documents.Hope this will be of use to you.
Now over to Sri.Madhavakannan and adiyen won't interfere with him and Thirumangai azhvar, hereafter.
Dasan venkat
Sri:
Dearest Sisters and Brothers, Happy makara sankaranthi! Happy Pongal!
I pray to Divya Damapthis for Their blessings and AchAryAs and ThirumangaiAzhwAr for Their anugraham for my yet another rash, brazen attempt to enter into tranlsation kaimkaryam. Please forgive me for my errors and mistakes. Anything good in it, I am not to be "blamed"; All Emperumaan's grace and AzhwAr's and AchAryan anugraham. All mistakes, blunders are mine; Please pat (slap) my back for that.
ThirumangaiAzhwAr's Periya Thirumozhi is what we are going to enjoy next. All of you know well about this Great AzhwAr, and he needs no introduction. However, for novices like me, just a quick account of his biography:
In his early days, as a king, our Lord Narayana was far from AzhwAr's
thoughts. His spiritual journey started with a commitment he made
to his sweetheart Kumudhavalli in exchange for her hand in marriage.
While most women may have asked for her suitor's everlasting love, or a
diamond ring, or a golden bangle, all our gentle lady Kumudhavalli sought
from AzhwAr was that he must wear the marks of Sri Vaishnava and serve
food (amudhu) for 1,000 Vaishnavaas everyday for a period of one
year. This service, initiated as a price for carnal pleasure,
turned into a labour of divine love towards the devotees of our Lord Narayana.
Years rolled by. AzhwAr spent all his wealth in the service of Vaishnavas.
With his coffers empty, AzhwAr could not continue the service. He
could not bear the thought of having to turn away the Vasihnavas who by
then were accustomed to blessing his abode with their presence.
The feeling of despair turned to anger at the sight of the greedy idle rich strolling around with all their gaudy and ostentatious jewels and showing contempt for the simple and devout Vasihnavas. This was enough to drive our Great AzhwAr to actions. But it was not just fame that was in store for our AzhwAr.
Our Lord Sriya: Pathih Sriman Narayana decided to intervene and turn AzhwAr away from the ways of the sword. He and His consort, our divine mother Sri, appeared before him as a newly wed couple bedecked with priceless ornaments. AzhwAr, who hid himself at ThirumaNankollai, stopped the couple and forcibly relieved them of all the jewellery.
But, there was one piece on our Lord's toe that wouldn't come off however
much AzhwAr tried. In frustration AzhwAr
put his head on the lotus feet of our Lord (!) with the intention of
biting the ring off. He asked the Lord as to what is the magic manthra
for removing? (The Lord must have mis understood that AzhwAr enquires regarding
samsaara bond!) and that sort of SaraNagathy did work! at that moment AzhwAr
was drawn in by the beauty of the lotus feet and realized
the true nature of the couple standing in front of him. The Lord
then instructed the esoteric meaning of the "magic manthra" i.e
"Thirumandhiram" or Ashtaaksharam for the Most Blessed AzhwAr, to get
initiated by the Lord Himself, with Their "thadutthaaTkoLLal".
Thus AzhwAr learnt of the efficacy of the divine name "Narayana" from our Lord Narayana Himself!
He immediately burst out to sing the poem "Periya Thirumozhi" (Great divine poem) consisting of 1,084 verses. The first ten of these verses are dedicated to the name "Narayana." These first 10 emotional verses give aid and comfort to people.
AzhwAr comes down hard on himself with intense self criticism for the
violence he had caused, though for a good cause, for having sought fleeting
worldly pleasures, for having squandered his days on mundane pursuits.
He ends each of
these ten verses with a celebration of the divine name Narayana, for
after finding this sweet name, AzhwAr declares, he was free from all the
sins and assured of the everlasting bliss at the lotus feet of our sweet
Lord Narayana (Biography passage -stole- from Sri Dileepan's
post in Dec 95- in bhakti list - Thanks, Dileepan!)
His compositions were :
1. Periya thirumozhi
2. Periya thirumadal
3. SiRiya thirumadal
4. Thiru nedunthANdakam (TNT)
5. Thiru KurunthANdakam(TKT)
6.Thiru vezhuk kurrirukkai.
His pAsurams are marvellous; excellent and have unsurpassed beauty in them. ParAsara Bhattar made use of his TNT to win over his counter part, an advaitin scholar in his arguments and later the advaitin became his disciple 'nam jeeyar'.
Sri RanganAtha himself heard and was greatly pleased with that argument re-enacted from Bhattar quoting from TNT (Please read excellent posts of Sri V. SadagOpan on TNT and TKT duringFeb 96 from Bhakti Archives - a real feast to each one of you).
Thirumangai AzhwAr (a KING, a person who had all kingly royal comforts) walked all the way and VISITED almost all temples. He is simply GREAT, my dearest brothers and sisters. He is JUST S U P E R B AzhwAr. His wordings are his outpourings straight from his heart.
It is told and declared by Tamil Poets of all kinds that His paasurams contain ezhutthu (writing), sol,(words) poruL, (meanings), yaappu (Grammar), aNi (figure of sppech?) etc.. His songs are so great and so nice to recite! It is simple and quite lucid too for reciters and those who know even little Tamil, can understand the lovely emotional outbursts of AzhwAr and his bhakti.
His paasurams depict mainly the archaavathaarams of Divya dEsams, and when He enjoys Them with the descrition of Divya Desams, they simply immerse us in unbounded limitless bliss and pErAnandham.
Thai AzhwAr, when Kumudavalli had asked him to become a Srivaishnava, got his pancha samskaaram done by ThirunaRaiyoor Nambhi. He got his Thiru ManthrOpadEsam from Sri SowrirAja PerumAL; AzhwAr praises These Lords individually with 100 pAsurams! Nambhi naamam sollil NamO NaaraayaNamE".
This AzhwAr had Great regards for NammAzhwAr. He appealed and requested Sri Ranganathan for lsitening to Thiruvaaymozhi from Kaarthigai sukla Ekadasi and now all Sri vaishnava Divya Desams celebrate this uthasavam of reciting Thiruvaaymozhi.
The essence of Periya Thirumozhi is: The worldly life is sorrowful;
It can be cured only by the grace of Sriman Narayanan; Hence, get saved
by paying obeisance to Him at His Divya Desams (106 Thiruppathis on this
Earth). AzhwAr visited almost about 80 Thiruppathis, all on foot; He sang
1253 passurams, next only to NammAzhwAr; (but NammAzhwAr never went
to any Divya Desams; The Lords came to Him!)… Thirumangai AzhwAr padi
padi paraparappaay Thirndhaar…He declares: If one surrenders to Sriman
Narayanan, "enRum vinaiyaagina saaragilaavE"… (Never will sins accrue to
your account!)..
This prabhandham should be read, re-read, re-re read and enjoyed! So
nice are they… Last Kaarthigai Kritthigai nakshathram (during AzhwAr Thirunakshathram)
as instructed by our KaNNan Swami, I could recite Periya Thirumozhi for
ten days preceding his Thirunakshathram and completed on his birthday.
It was a great feeling of having read his lovely Periya Thirumozhi. Dearest
Sisters and Brothers, my attempting to write these translation is: 1. Those
who do not know Tamil, can get to know the meanings, and enjoy. 2. Those
who wish to know the meanings (though we all know Tamil, it is still difficult
to understand the
meanings) and 3. Being a self-centred person, I myself would like to
enjoy them, by reading the pAsurams and writing these translations.
May I request for all your aseervaathams and wishes for such a rash attempt? (Fools rush in where angels fear to tread).
Thirumangai AzhwAr ThiruvadigaLE SaraNam
"thunjum bOdhu azhaimin.. thuyar varil ninaimin… thuyarileer sollinum nanRaam… (While you sleep, call… or when you feel depressed and sorrowful… call… or no worries.. no problems.. stilll it is so sweet to utter…. Call "Narayana Narayana" says "Thirumangai AzhwAr)

kesi, which came as if it learns to dance and walk towards KaNNan (with

7. Who can perform such valorous greatest deeds? The One so Huge like

Him with folded hands. This Lord who alleviates the thaapams
of Devas who come here to pay their obeisance, is at Chithra koodam
8. The Lord appeared then and there from the pillar when HiraNyan angrily
yelled at Prahalada, and immediately finished him

He shines so gracefully, being worshipped and praised by Devas and in all
seven worlds. He, who comes along with the unparalleled Nappinnai PiraaTTi,
the limitless BhUmi PiraaTTi and the most Compassionate Divine Periya PiraaTTi
MahAlakshmi, resides at Chithra Koodam
10. This Lord of Thillai Chithrakoodam is the Chief of Nithyars. About Him, ThirumangaiAzhwAr, who is the king of Thirumangai, sang these ten pAsurams. He has the sharp spear in his hand that can pierce through the body of enemies. Those who read these ten, understanding these meanings, will be completely cured of their sins.
AzhwAr declares in this ten (3.4) that if one goes to SeeraamaviNNagaram
Divya dEsam, and holds onto the
Lord there, all fruits will come to him.
This SreeraamaviNNagaram is present day Seergaazhi. There is a railway
station and it is just ½ km from the
station.
Moolavar: Thrivikraman, UlagaLandha Thiruvuruvam
Uthsavar: Thrivikrama Narayanan
Thaayaar: Moolavar: Lokanayaki;
Thaayaar: Uthsavar: Mattavizh kuzhali (What a sweet name!)
VishEsham:
PerumAL lifts His leg for measuring the Universe. In this sthalam only,
ThirumangaiAzhwAr won in an argument with ThirugnAnasambhandhar (one of
63 naayanmaars), and received the victorious spear from him.He also sang
“kadiyuNda neduvaaLai” poem; The Virudhu (title) “Naalu kavi perumAL” was
conferred on AzhwAr.
When Brahma was proud of his long age, Romasamuni said “Your age and
my rOmam (hair) is equal” and humbled
Brahma in this sthalam.
Prathayaksham to AshtakONa maharishi. (why that name?)
Having enjoyed the greatness of the sthalam, let us now enjoy AzhwAr’s pAsurams.
1. (This pAsuram refers to one two three.. till seven very beautifully
by AzhwAr). By taking an unparalleled Vaamana
avtaar, He measured the whole Universe in His two steps, when he begged
for three measures of earth from Mahabali,
and held him captive in PaathALa lOkam- Those who wish to hug the Lotus
feet of such Greatest His! Please reach the

onto Him! Such greatest place is SeeraamaviNNagaram

Please proceed to SeeraamaviNNagara, where one sees everywhere, the honey flooded Lotus flowers in beautiful ponds, the huge bulls run with tremendous strengths, and the pearls are mistaken by the big Kurugu birds that they are their eggs. Such a beautiful fertile land is this Divya Desam. (our four yugas is equal to one day of Brahma; He lives for his 100 years- When that happens, i.e. his 100 years get over, one hair from Romasa rishi’s body falls- it is told) Such greatest place is SeeraamaviNNagaram
3. The peerless, limitless greatest huge Varaaha moorthy saved the Earth
by bringing it back on His horn from the deep troubled
waters during MahA PraLayam, and the unbounded, most wonderful Lord
who cut the shoulders of VaaNan, with His ChakrAyudham- Those who
wish to hold onto His Feet! Please proceed to Seeraama viNNagaram, where
the beautiful girls,
(when entering into the fertile fields for removing other plants (“kaLai”),
)mistake the “kuvaLai” flowers in the fields for their
eyes and the “Kumudham” flowers as their mouths come out without actually
doing so.. Such greatest place is SeeraamaviNNagaram
4. For the sake of soft cotton like tender footed Nappinnai PiraaTTi, Emperumaan valorously fought with seven bulls and killed them; This Lord, using His sharp nails, simply tore the strong chest of HiraNyan- Those who wish to hug the lotus feet of such greatest Lord! Please proceed to SeeraamaviNNagaram, the beauty of which is when the twilight sets in and the darkness engulfs everywhere, the pearls glitter lustrously and sheds light; the Corals emit the brightest rays like that of the Sun… Such greatest place is SeeraamaviNNagaram
5. This Emperumaan offered the enemy kings and their entire kulam as
an offering to His ancestors during His ParaurAma
avtaar- This Lord simply tore the mouth of Kesi asurA horse and finished
him; Those who are desirous of prostrating at the
Lotus Feet of such Greatest Emperumaan! Please proceed to Seeraama
viNNagaram, which is surrounded by most beautiful
fields, where young girls work whose mouths show the red lily flowers,
whose large sparkling eyes show the “kuvaLai” flowers
and whose faces show us the lotus flowers. Such greatest place is SeeraamaviNNagaram
6. Lord Rama- who finished the life of angry red eyed, strong Vaali; who killed Viraadhan, (who was always victorious, strong and had long hands with strong weapons, who had cruel looking demonic eyes). Those who long to join the Lotus feet of Rama! ThirumangaiAzhwAr wished to hug the lotus feet of Emperumaan in
the last ten and since it did not materialise, AzhwAr gets into nAyikA
bhAvam and starts lamenting asking the birds to go as her messengers to
the Lord. She finds after 4 pAsurams, that the Lord is in her front and
starts bursting out to Him narrating her sufferings she had been undergoing
so long.. The words, the rhythm, the tune is all superb again by AzhwAr,
(not to mention the lovely meanings).
1. Oh little small vaNdE! (bee), with dark and white lines on your body; with your never separating yourself from your mates, with your legs stepping on those fully bloomed flowers, with your continuous drinking of the honey from those flowers! Please go and tell of my pitiable state of sufferings for Him, to the Lord of Thiruvaali, where great scholars who without fail, and any blemishes, perform Yaaghams offering lots of ghee to the well lit agni (fire) reside there.
2. Oh six legged vaNdE! (bee), the one
who always sucks the honey from fully bloomed flowers, sitting with
your mate! I do not know the action or thinking of the Lord of Thiruvaali,
which is surrounded by beautiful canals all four sides and
flowers bloomed around the fertile fields. You go immediately and
faster and tell Him the "pasalai" disease that spreads on my
body (due to the separation from Him) and my terrible sufferings
due to viraha thaapam.
3. SarvEshawran the One who is Antharyaami in all Five elements (fire, water, space Air and the Earth) has not given me His thulasi maalai that He wears on His Chest. I can survive only with that garland of thuLasi. Oh small Kurugu" bird! The one who lives in the beautiful Thiruvaali! Go and get to know what He thinks of me in order to make me live.
4. Though He does not think of me Himself, on His own, I have been languishing with love for Him, with terrible sufferings. Is He causing me excruciating pains to make me thin down with such torments? Oh the sweet soft spoken, striped bee! Go and tell my illness and sufferings to KaNNapiraan, the Chief of Thiruvaali and let Him know of my diseases..
5. (read this pAsuram! What words!
What a rhythm! How many
times "aaLaa" is so nicely used..)
"vaaLaaya

Oh Lord, the One who has
the Feet that had measured the whole Universe, that day! Oh Lord who reclined
in THIRUKKUDANTHAI! (Don't forget to sign the cheque for the Kaimkaryam).
The Strong shouldered One, which lifted the huge Govardhana mountain! You
shall come to me as my unparalleled ONLY support and rescue me, the one
who suffers with (love sick) pasalai disease spreading on those tender
breasts, and tears incessantly rolling down from the eyes, thinking
of You
only at all times day in and day out.
6. The Lord- He is my Swami; The One,
who has lovely strongest Divine Chest which is flooded with honey due to
the bees that drink the honey from thuLasi maalai and roams around;
- who broke the tusk of Kuvalayaapeetam elephant that stood in front
of Him to fight with Him and kill Him, when He was entering Kamsan's palace;
who has Garuda as His Vaahanam;
Such greatest Lord is my Swami. He is dark Divine Bodied KaNNapiraan,
The Cowherd boy; The One who resides always permanently at Thiruvaali,
where the chariots run on the wide streets; Will He steal my golden bangles
also that simply fall off from this suffering girl's wrists? (He has already
stolen my heart? He should come to me now to steal my bangles too!)
7. On ThiruvananthAzhwAn, the Lord reclines
like a huge mountain on the wavy, ThiruppaRkadal (Milk Ocean); He is the
One who is so wonderful to appear as a small Boy to beg from mahabhali
and then took huge form to measure the
Universe and all three worlds, (in order to get back from Bhali). Oh
Such most wonderful Lord! Oh Mater! The One who stays at Thiruvaali,
where there is full of trees and gardens! You have snatched away
the sleep from my eyes.. Now., do I have to lose my bangles too?
8. Oh the Lord who resides at Thirukkudanthai!
the One who dances with the pot! Will I, the sleepless eyed one, keep suffering
thinking about You only for ever and ever? By looking at the beautiful
young moon, (where rabbit dances- AzhWar
may be referring the form of rabbit that is seen on the Moon
from the earth, if I am not wrong) my mind gets more exhausted and languishing,
losing my bangles, oh The Lord of Thiruvaali! When I am suffering
like that (having lost my bangles, my sleep),
can you torment me more by letting me lose my beautiful fair
complexion too (my body gets more pale due to languishing)
9. (AzhwAr's lovely play of words with so many "aaLaa" again!Read this pAsuram! Enjoy!

(WoW! adadaaa! enna ahzghu konjum thamizh....) Words simply rush to AzhwAr and sit comfortably in its place..
Oh Lord! the One who has the Bow in Your Hand! The One who aimed the arrow through seven trees! The One who shows Himself at Thirumeyyam mountain! Even though You had not desired to let me hold on to You without expecting any other fruits, all that I desire for is: You should rule me and take me at least one day, and hug me with Your broad Divine Chest to let my tender breasts be ruled by You. You should take me for Yourself. Then, I need not have to bother about my bangles and sleep. (means: After He takes us, we need not bother about any sufferings/loss ; i.e. There will be none.)
10. The Lord- SarvEshwaran, (who has the Divine
ChakrA, the brightest one like Ghee laden fire, in His Hand,) who resides
at Thiruvaali, where black lovely kuvaLai flowers bloom everywhere, is
sung in this ten pAsurams by AzhwAr who has the sharp spear in his hand.
Those who recite these Tamil songs (sung by Kaliyan who has seen the Lord)
and know the meanings fully
will never ever get any sin approaching them at all.
1. Can I call Him a thief, a robber for having taken my innocent daughter
along with Him? I don't know. The Dark hued Youthful
Lord, called this narrow waisted, young beautiful girl and walked away
with her holding her hand that wears silver bangles. This girl, leaving
me alone here, goes off with Him, and this duo walking away from me, (looking
at each other with such an intense love for each other)- will they reach
Thiruvaali, the fertile Divya dEsam (or will they get lost, beacuse they
are not looking at the path..)
2. Oh my neighbour girl! This Youth did lots of mischeifs that day in Ayarpaadi. Now, this Lad, in order to taste those red bimbha fruit like lips of my youthful beautiful girl, has entered into the house, and started befriending her; This girl, falling inlove with Him, starts following Him. The fish like those beuatiful eyes glittering and shining so bright, and talking to Him sweetly like the parrots, will They reach Thiruvaali? or not?
3. "These two are walking together"- this statement itself is so scary to me and this Young lad had cut the nose of the asura lady (Soorpanakai) with anger; Such strongest One is Rama. But now I am scared. My girl, the one who has tender, soft cotton like feet, who has long bamboo like shoulders, is walking off with Him; She, without even being aware of the consequences, has gone with Him. Will They reach Thiruvaali at all?
4. This Youth's previous births - Khathriyan? I don't know. He os Young. He can blow the Conch which itself can scare and chase the enemies. Oh folks! Those who said that He went as a messenger to the kings, do you all know by any chance what is His birth? My darling daughter walks off with the Lord and Master of ThirumagaL -MahAlakshmi, as her only support and partner. Will They reach Thiruvaali, which is full of beautiful ponds of Lotus flowers, where bees drink honey and dance happily?
5. My girl, who has lovely shoulders, does not even think of her mother,(i.e
me). She has considered Madhavan - the Most wonderful Lord- the Most beautiful
and Most virtuous Lord as the only refuge and support for her and thinks
that she is for Him only. She has thus left me alone here and has gracefully
walked off like a beautiful swan towards Him. This creeper like
beautiful darling of girl ofmine, and He- will They reach Thiruvaali
at all?
6. She has no conceren at all for us like "mother, father etc..". She does not even care that I am left alone here lamenting for my girl. She only longs for the bliss of hugging the beuatiful strong shoulders of His. that hugged Nappinnai PiraaTTi. This girl is walking away from me and joins Him, the One who resides at Srirangam, the One who is the best support for Devas. Will They reach Thiruvaali?
7. She has absolutely no care about us, as father and mother. She is desirous of only those most strongest arms of that master of Nappinnai Piraatti. This girl whose narrow waist conquers even the lightning and creeper, is walking away from me and joins the charming Most beautiful companion, Will They reach Thiruvaali, which is full of swans and lovely gardens?
8. This girl, leaving all those soft tender games like siRumuRam, pacchaikkiLi, pandhu, oonjal, and also that small bird that talks in a shrill voice from its cage, has walked away and I am not able see that beauitful darling daughter of mine, who wears brightest shining golden ornaments fully. She has walked behind that One who has eveyone (except Him) paying obeisance to Him, who has no birth or death. Will They reach Thiruvaali at all?
9. My girl, the darling daughter of mine, has got lovely dark, flower like eyes. Thinking of her beauty and her nature, she can be even compared to the most fragrant, Most beautiful Periya PiraaTTi, Mahalakshmi, the one born of red Lotus flower. She has got a lovely gait like that of a beautiful swan. She has got bamboo like shaoulders. Since she was born from me- this "sinner" (mahaapapi), she has no feminine shyness (lajjai),and has fallen in love with Emperumaan and gone to Him. I don't know if They will ever reach the most fertile, most beautiful Thiruvaali?
10. This girl, having no other accompaniment, leaving the mother alone
lamenting, has gone and joined Emperumaan (who has fallen in love with
her more than her love form Him). This ten pAsurams sung by Kaliyan the
one who has sharp spear in his hands, are on "whether They will ever reach
the most fertile Thiruvaali at all?". those who read (or recite) them with
whole heart, will be protected by the Lord, the Chief of Paramapadham- (Paramapadhanathan).
